(battle of the 2004 song titles vol. 1)

djdee2005, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a feeling the lasting contribution of the DFA is going to be boild down to "beat connection". there's nothing to recommend "yeah" over it, and in its three movements neatly encapsulates their better moments (their remixes, "jealous lovers", the new-ish "chicago house" tracks on the rapture album)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway usher will always be a teen heartthrob to me and his "yeah" doesn't really cut it for me either - it's a little too grating for a proper teen heartthrob. i am hearing this song as his bid for maturity - even though that was probably actually like two albums ago (from which i honestly can't remember the singles) - and i have to say i'm enjoying chingy's bid for the teen market much more. yeah i realize the two tracks couldn't be less related (except for the fact that chingy's providing my expected usher-kicks for early 2004 much better than nick cannon)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

WHY MUST THEY GROW UP (unironically)

(can i also say that i enjoy fabolous turn with b2k more than anything else yet?)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the first time i heard 'yeah' was when omarion (i think it was him) danced to the instrumental of it on the 106&park stage. i thought it was some classic electro (i'm not sure if that's the right thing, 'electro.' i just mean music that breakdancers like) track. later, i heard the real thing with everyone on it and recognized it. i like it a lot.

cloverlandthug, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard the Usher "Yeah," but unless it's single-of-the-year worthy, seems unlikely that it'd be better.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i still think the usher track sounds like a bad bootleg.

i like the lcd track a lot.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i just mean music that breakdancers like

imagine my shock when i found out that our breakdancers (which are a HUGE contingent here) are into donald byrd and watts 103rd st rhythm band and stuff. they hate electro!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yeah" is great but it's not as good as "Yeah".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD Soundsystem rules!! Usher sucks!! NEXT!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil Jon rules. LCD Soundsystem try too hard.

Its dance music that's ok to like!!!!

djdee2005, Thursday, 12 February 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatevah, man.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 12 February 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

USHER

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Thursday, 12 February 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know a damn thing about a damn thing and I've never heard the Usher track, but the LCD Soundsystem track is pretty fine in my mind. It is almost the length of my walk to work and quite suitable for that task amongst others.

nick ring (nick ring), Thursday, 12 February 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ, just because it's dance music that's OK to like doesn't make it any less legitimate.

Don't blame the artist for the faults of its audience, please.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Its dance music that's ok to like!!!!

Is it okay to like hip-hop at all? I needed that cleared up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like the Usher track. I really like the LCD track too. I'll decide some other time but thanks for getting me to download the Usher.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

bah what are you all hearing that i am not?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

lcd track is ace, acer when heard on big big system while on drugs.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the echo on the honking thing - it sounds lonesome.

(I'm not meaning to sound faux-naif btw - work has fucked my brain and all I can think about is ringtones - maybe thats why I like it!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha that might be well why i hate it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

actually "hate" is too strong a word...it's mostly bafflement.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it okay to like hip-hop at all? I needed that cleared up.

Was this a jab at me? My initial statement was suggesting that LCD's "Yeah" was an attempt to make dance music "acceptable" for the hipster set. Yes, obv. that has nothing to do with whether the song is good or not...but I'm just not that amazed by it.

djdee2005, Friday, 13 February 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i still think the usher track sounds like a bad bootleg.

perhaps you have a bad mp3?

djdee2005, Friday, 13 February 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD's "Yeah" was an attempt to make dance music "acceptable" for the hipster set

This strikes me as a ridiculous statement. A) as if that was needed, B) as if it couldn't have been an attempt at, you know, making a killer record.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's too early to say whether "Yeah" will be embraced by the mythical hipster set. I suspect they actually won't like it too much if they don't already like dance. I mean, there's a reason that "House Of Jealous Lovers" was (relatively) huge while, like, DK7's "The Difference" wasn't.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

like, otm

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim, it just occurred to me, do you ever DJ? That would be a fun set to hear. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I have once or twice, but only for measely thirty minute intervals. I can't beat mix obv.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i have heard the usher track enough times on the radio now to know my mp3 is the real deal

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This strikes me as a ridiculous statement. A) as if that was needed, B) as if it couldn't have been an attempt at, you know, making a killer record.

um perhaps if I thought it was a killer record, I'd agree with you. But to be honest, I think the song is being overhyped and overrated.

djdee2005, Friday, 13 February 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

as if that was needed

You clearly haven't been to a rock show in Chicago.

djdee2005, Friday, 13 February 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

why should be care that we haven't?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

we, not be (ffs)

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why should we care about hipsters at all?

For that matter, why should I care about LCD Soundsystem? Clearly, I'm not getting something about what makes this song so great. I'd say "strongo hulkington OTM" except he's talking about the wrong "yeah."

djdee2005, Friday, 13 February 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly, I'm not getting something about what makes this song so great.

Uh, no, it just means you don't like it. Which is fine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, works for me.

djdee2005, Friday, 13 February 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

um perhaps if I thought it was a killer record, I'd agree with you.

I realize you don't agree with me, but it's a bit presumptious to question the musician's intention just because you don't like his work is what I'm saying.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 13 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm waiting for the LCD Soundsystem remix of Usher's "Yeah." It will be awesome!!1!

Slumberlord (Imbroglio), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah isn't really very hipster is it?

Or very rock audience?

"Yeah lets stroke our chins and pose to WAJSHFJAHGSFH WEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOWWWWWW *ACID SCRAPE* ASDJFVADVKJADKJNADJ GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, AFSHA,JXBCNAKJN"

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering about the exact lyrics, thanks Ronan! :-)

JoB (JoB), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot a w somewhere I'm sure!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh but Ronan haven't you heard: dancing is the new chin-stroking! Only hardcore street muthas stroke their chins now, the hipsterati have moved on to sweating and flailing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 15 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The Usher track gets off to a much better jump. LCD kind of starts out with that grating, burnt out tone, which it sheds, but I still give the advantage to Usher.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
does jess still not like usher's "yeah"? i'm taken athwack. i mean aback.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

How huge a cultural vacuum do people live in that they've heard the DFA track and not the Usher one?

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I just can't get into that Usher song. I'm not sure why, really. I don't dislike it. I like the Fujikato remix a lot more than the regular mix, though. I think I just don't really like Usher.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, considering DFA are the most overrated hacks in the entirety of music, and the Usher song is insanely catchy and fun, no two ways about it, Usher.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on. That LCD Soundsystem song is catchy and fun too.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE this track more each time I hear it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a rave-up.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone else see Usher on Saturday Night Live last night? His dance routine during "Yeah" was pretty insane. I know this isn't saying much, but it was probably the most exciting musical performance I've seen on SNL in the past couple of years at least.

NA (Nick A.), Sunday, 2 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

How huge a cultural vacuum do people live in that they've heard the DFA track and not the Usher one?

It's called not turning on the radio.

usher's dancing is pretty typically amazing, i think

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 2 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny, because if you were to come onto one of the boards I frequent, YOU'D all be considered trolls for LIKING this music.

I'm no troll, though. Shit like "Yea" is just utter crap. that's my opinion. If you don't like it, well, tough. Keep arguing back all you want, I'll keep doing the same AND WE'LL HAVE A BIG FUCKING TEA PARTY! YEAAAAAA, HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES.

But, let me reiterate: Usher's "Yea" is terrible beyond belief, The Ying Yang Twins suck, Lil Jon sucks, Kanye West sucks, Chingy sucks, Jay-Z sucks, P. diddy sucks, pretty much most commercial rap nowadays sucks other than a few artists here and there, and I predict in the next message someone calls me a stupid indie kid! Which will make me laugh.

I can't believe how many people hated on the Usher track upthread! I've softened my tone somewhat on the LCD song, (probably because the waves of hype have died down) but yeah URSHER killllls it.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 28 November 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite possibly my #1 and #2 singles of the year, respectively.

I'll say that Usher's "Yeah!" has aged better on me than LCD's, but LCD's still has the slight edge.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 28 November 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

get ready for the hype to start again!

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 28 November 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Fun chart fact: This year, in I think an unprecedented feat, Usher has held the #1 spot on the US charts for more than half of the year (with four consecutive singles--"Yeah!," "Burn," "Confessions, Pt. II" and "My Boo"). And it looks like he might even get single #5 before the year's up with "Lovers and Friends".

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 28 November 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

great thread.

anyway during 'yeah' last night lcd played this incredible outro for like 3 minutes that sounded kinda like the second to last "song" on the villalobos fabric mix. never seen lcd before so idk if they always do this or what but it was incredible.

blew arcade fire off the stage btw (and arcade fire were really pretty awesome).

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, they've been doing that for a while, since it was pretty much the same ending they did at Lollapalooza in August. I was there last night in Kansas City too...

mh, Saturday, 29 September 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

were you surprised at how much louder lcd were than AF?

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 29 September 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

DJ, just because it's dance music that's OK to like doesn't make it any less legitimate.

anyway during 'yeah' last night lcd played this incredible outro for like 3 minutes that sounded kinda like the second to last "song" on the villalobos fabric mix. never seen lcd before so idk if they always do this or what but it was incredible.

when i saw them the "yeah" outro had all four (five?) of them using percussion instruments, sounding like one massive drum. it was incredible.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 29 September 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

"Yeah" was terrific last night in KC, as was the whole LCD Soundsystem set. They were all playing percussion, I think---I can't remember exactly, as it was pretty nuts.

The sound was great, too, way better than it was for Arcade Fire. At times Arcade Fire just sounded like trebly fuzz, in a bad way (I understand this is how many hear the records too, but believe me, this was a bad mix, I think).
