Monster Magnet vs. The Darkness

Monster Magnet kicks ass all over The Darkness and it makes me sad that Magnet has to struggle. Why has no one heard of the mighty Magnet? Praise be to the Bullgod!

propagandist, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

While I agree, they're not exactly natural comparison points.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a Darkness fan who has never heard any Monster Magnet (I think). What songs should I hear first?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm. "Nugatory Teenage Warhead" -- and that IS the title.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They're both kind of bombastic, tongue in cheek, comic book hard rock.

I love the Magnet, one of the best bands I've ever seen live.

Is that rockist?

Check out "Spine of God," "Nod Scene," "Powertrip," "Bummer," "See You in Hell," "Cyclops Revolution," or "Cage Around the Sun."

Tab25, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster Magnet = the loudest rock show I ever went to. I think both bands are great but Ned's right. Tico: you need to hear "Twin Earth" off of Superjudge.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah, I am fool, but I was close. Negasonic Teenage Warhead. And the album it's from is here, if that helps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster Magnet are probably my second least favourite band of all time, for what it's worth.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And The Darkness is your favourite?

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Darkness are fun, and write great choruses - indeed the best thing that has happened to metal since Def Leppard's "Hysteria".

Monster Magnet is just noise and screaming.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir is a Darkness fan = SO MUCH IS CLEAR

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

major x-post

You should hear all of God Says No (the whole album) first. Lots of Monster Magnet old timers would cry foul, but if you're going from the Darkness, it's probably the most natural bridge into the netherverse that is Magnet Music.
As for other ideas, the big breakthrough song was "Negasonic Teenage Warhead," which kicks as much ass as any song ever has. The closest they came to a hit is, I think, "Spacelord," which is a bit watered down.
By the way, Monster Magnet all over the Darkness. It's like comparing Sabbath to Slade. They're both good, but come on.

otto, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom that's because it's a Satanic drug thing ... you wouldn't understand.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like comparing Sabbath to Slade.

Yes, but both Sabbath and Slade are good. The subjects under comparison don't quite work that way for me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually almost wore my Monster Magnet shirt today so there ya go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Darkness also are great live!

(nb Tab25 for proper rockist terminology you need to be using the phrase "cut it live"! Or saying things like "It's like comparing Sabbath to Slade. They're both good, but come on.")

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the girl's in my A-level English class had a picture of Dave Wyndorff (or whatever he's called) inside her folder. She was rubbish as well.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster Magnet over the Darkness 1000 percent. Also, cosmic injustice dept.: Superjudge (and Fudge Tunnel's Creep Diets, too) getting criminally ignored upon release because of some whiny piece of crap called In Utero.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "Negasonic," great song, from "Dopes to Infinity," a modern psychedelic rockin' masterpiece.

I like all their albums, but you're right otto, a lot of hardcore Magnet fans (all ten of 'em) don't like it because it's not as psych as the old stuff. But it's a great album. In fact, they haven't done a bad album.

Noise and screaming? I hope you're kidding, Geir. Def Leppard was and always will be utter crap.

Great responses! I'm starting to love y'all! I was starting to feel like the only living Magnet fan.

Tab25, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's like comparing Sabbath to Slade"

Perhaps more like comparing Acid Mothers Temple to Poison, or Hawkwind to Faster Pussycat.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I ignored In Utero. Kyuss's Blues for the Red Sun is also U & K. (x-post)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Generally, the idea of heavy metal is a bad one, regardless of what kind. But Def Leppard did at least have proper songs, and some great backing vocals. And the songs are also the good thing about The Darkness.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Def Leppard was and always will be utter crap.

YOU LIE, sir. At least in my experience. No Pyromania when I was 12 = no love of metal and loud guitars. It was the gateway and it was and is great pop. As was Hysteria!

But you are not the only Magnet fan, in fact I think I did a slew of the AMG reviews, not just the one I linked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster magnet = tongue in cheek 'omage to early 70s rock
Darkness = tongue in cheek 'omage to early 80s rock

I love Monster Magnet - best song Dopes to Infinity

MikeB, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Def Leppard had thin, metallic production, vocals that whined, and it was all treble. Bad lyrics too.

But that's just my opinion. I had Pyromania and High & Dry when I was a wee one myself, but it doesn't hold up for me.

Tab25, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster Magnet is just noise and screaming.

yeah, geir, you are wrong about that. there is plenty of stuff of theirs that you would dig, as a lot of it is steeped in that 60's rock thang that you like. especially the later stuff.

i was just listening to monster magnet the other day.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico, is it rockist to point out other people's rockism? I'm still trying to understand.

otto, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a magic man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

>i was just listening to monster magnet the other day.

Me, too. Hauled Superjudge out last week. Love their version of Hawkwind's "Brainstorm," and the lyrics are fucking hilarious...like some stoned teenager scribbling apocalyptic visions in his math notebook in 1978.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Def Leppard had thin, metallic production, vocals that whined, and it was all treble

Treble=good
Bass=bad

:-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Where were y'all on the last Magnet tour? I saw four shows in the God Says No Tour, and outside NYC, there were, literally, about 30 people at each show. It was so sad. They were still fantastic, but that must have been rough for them. God Says No tanked.

Two of the AWFUL bands I've seen open for Magnet, Staind and Buckcherry, went on to have big hits. Wyndorf deserves a hit!

Tab25, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i was listening to atomic bitchwax too this week. i really like those records. and this ten inch i have where monster magnet does a stooges song but i can't even remember which one. anyway, it sounded cool.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, that is sad. i didn't know that no one went to their shows. they should rebuild. go the bitchwax route. get noisier and sign to southern lord.

i gave god says no a good review in the voice. i said that we needed bands like them...um..for some reason. i can't remember. something about riding the tractor on the drug farm.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Scott, I think the song is 1970.

I remember your Voice review (did you say something about the many moods of Wyndorf's penis?) That was great!

They have a new album coming out on the 17th, "Monolithic Baby," on a German label.

Tab25, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Bought another copy of Zoso
Seeds were bustin' up the spine
I think i wet my pants doin' whiphits
Not too many but it's just fine
Sit me on the lap of the god's babe
Cover me with skin and hair
Ride a number one on the home train
Screw you if you think i can't .........

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster Magnet suffered the largest fall from grace of any band ever from their pre-album material to their debut album.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Nonsense.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it's very hard to believe it's the same band.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

(Tab25, gygax! just practiced rockism, fyi)

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

How's that, Gygax? I've got the demos, I've got the albums, I've got the Glitterhouse stuff, and it's all damn good. I think 'Dopes to Infinity' is their masterpiece tho.

Tab25, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Broheems! I think I'm starting to get it.

Tab25, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

people said similar things about white zombie but then they became a groovy disco band!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

so, anyway, i thought that darkness album was boring and the songs were bad but i'll listen again. maybe i missed something. other people really seem to like it. but it really came down to the songs for me. i like jokes but the material has to be really strong.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Dopes to Infinity was the first Monster Magnet album I didn't pick up. I only heard it once and it didn't really grab me as immediately as the earlier records. I should give it another chance. Wasn't that the one where if you bought the double-vinyl version, one song was extended to take up a whole side? I want to hear that!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(i'm talking about the first 2 singles here.) Spine Of God is one of the biggest musical letdowns of my teenage years.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster Magent - capable of absolute, rocktastic splendor.

the Darkness - a shredded, runny, soiled condom in the face of the definite article.

There is absolutely no comparison, and SHAME ON YE to suggest otherwise.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

So was anyone here a Shrapnel fan? At the time?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Nedasonic Teenage Warhead

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

>people said similar things about white zombie but then they became a groovy disco band!

I still wanna hear the scrapped version of La Sexorcisto that was produced by Jim Thirlwell.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

British band who seek to bring party metal back to the people. And some people want it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster Magnet's last few albums have been just as weak though if you ask me. I think Wyndorf got clean at the end of the Dopes tour. And they haven't been the same since.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I started a thread shortly before Christmas expressing my joy that MM had chosen to cover Venus In Furs. When I actually heard it my joy fragmented somewhat. Mainly cos they didn't render it a SACRELIGIOUS stoner rock cow decapitator of an interpretation.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, so I'm listening to Spine Of God for the first time in years RIGHT NOW. "Pill Shovel" is fucking incredible. I'm gonna get back into drugs!!!

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So what classic, obscure rock tracks does Wyndorf rip on the new album? You know, Twin Earth = Mesmerization Eclipse by Captain Beyond, I Want More = Financial Declaration by Union Carbide Productions uhhh... I can't think of any more - help me out here!

radio morocco (radio morocco), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

you want us to tell you what every monster magnet song reminds you of? that would be hard.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

NO! those are stone cold ... 'tributes'! Go listen.

radio morocco (radio morocco), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

THe other rip I know is "Evil" which yes of course is a Howlin' Wolf song but their arrangement is based entirely on the one from Cactus's Restrictions lp.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that's EXACTLY what I mean.

radio morocco (radio morocco), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Negasonic Teenage Warhead had a really great video IIRC - and at their best, they're way better than the Darkness.

The new album, from what I've heard, sounds crap though.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 13 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly can't understand people who don't take at least a tiny bit of pleasure in The Darkness. It's all about seizing joy in the here and now, not jumping up with your hand raised and tattling to the teacher that "It's been done before."

It's the same thing with the new Courtney Love record: No, it's not "Live Through This." But it out-rocks any other female "rocker" at this moment. What, Pink? Fefe Dobson?

By the way, comparing The Darkness and Monster Magnet is ridiculous. Just for the record.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, comparing The Darkness and Monster Magnet is ridiculous. Just for the record.

That's all I was sayin'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Point taken.
(And sorry about the Courtney tangent. I must feel defensive after writing the review I did while every other critic trashed her.)

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

They had a soing called 'Space Lord' or something. It went 'Space Lord mother[MTV interference]'. I liked!

ENRQ (Enrique), Friday, 13 February 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And the video sent up Ma$e, didn't it?

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 13 February 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. It had some hott chicks in. Metal and rap have that affinity: the vidoes tend to feature hott chicks.

NRQ (Enrique), Friday, 13 February 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't it you a while back asking what this Queens of the Stone Age band the kids seem to like were all about? Now I think that's even more odd. Ah, never mind

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 13 February 2004 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It was me, utilizing what I like to call 'irony'. Not that I know much at all about QOTSA or Montster Magnet.

ENRQ (Enrique), Friday, 13 February 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

>And the video sent up Ma$e, didn't it?

I remember seeing an interview with Wyndorf on MTV where he explained that at the time, all the hard-rock/metal bands were making Pearl Jam-influenced videos where everyone in the group sat around looking mopey and desolate, and only rappers were putting hot chicks and flames and all the stuff that makes rock great in their videos. It's still one of the best videos I've ever seen (I'd put it up against "Hurt" anytime), and perfectly captures Monster Magnet.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

tab...25 is such a killer record. 25 is right up there with Elves and Death Valley 69 as one of my all-time favourite Stooges rips!

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:08 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, one of my all-time favorites too, tho not just as stooge-rip. demo version floating around is maybe even better, meaner, rawer. hell, first few mmagnets are among my favorite records of any sort (glitterhouse ep, spine, tab 25). dopes and POWRTRIP aces too, tho maybe more darkness-like, giganto rock comedy shtick

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:19 (seventeen years ago)

just felt the need to correct the lyrics misquoted above:

Bought another copy of Zoso
Seeds were bustin' up the spine
Think I wet my pants doin' whippets
Not too many buds just fine
Sit me in the lap of the gods, babe
Cover me with skin and hair
Rider #1 on the hump train
Screw you if you think I care

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

would also like to clear up the confusion regarding the "tab" EP, it is not called "tab 25" it's just called "tab" and the name of the band is monster magnet 25

I spent my 21st birthday at the brighton bar in long branch NJ watching mm25 play "tab"

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

awesome! i spent my 21st birthday drinking whisky with high schoolers in Homer's 'nice' trailer park...I tried walking home, and ended up waking up the next morning on some lady's porch, just in time for the sheriff to drive me home...

errr...i wish i were you edward.

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.mediafire.com/?vmtmizzymyg

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

dave wyndorf once wanted to play bass in my band but I told him no cuz he couldn't make it to practice (?!?) so being me isn't all it's cracked up to be

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah he also wanted to play drums in *another* band with me but the guitarist and I couldn't agree on a band name so we said forget it... double fucking stupid!

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

what bands are these?

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:55 (seventeen years ago)

both of these things happened while he was in monster magnet, around '90 - '91

life lesson: if rock genius wants to play music with you, let him do it m'kay

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:56 (seventeen years ago)

right on...ill remember that

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:57 (seventeen years ago)

obscure unknown bands that you would have heard of if I weren't such a stupid cunt

xpost

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:58 (seventeen years ago)

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

tim cronin played drums in prader willie

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:17 (seventeen years ago)

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:23 (seventeen years ago)

nod scene = THEE BEST wyndorf lyrics. also, if satan lived in heaven he'd be me. it's true

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

what's frightening is I can type out these lyrics from memory (original song title was "snake dance through rings of reefer smoke" but I think they got tired of writing that on set lists):

clear a spot in the cornfield
we got a girl in an army coat
pull up the gran torino
play some music for the holy goat

go go go
yeah let's smoke up bones

praise be to the bullgod
she's got release stuck all over her skin
take a dive in the nosebleed
and let the snake dance begin

she licked a sheet of blotter
now she's breathing through her teeth
just like a snake with tits
squirming up to me

go go go
yeah let's smoke up bones
go go go
I'm so fucking stoned

if satan lived in heaven he'd be me
an acid dirty dozen stupid sheep
that bulging triple eye can make you see
rub that naked belly up to me

up to me yeah up to me

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

How many psychedelic drugs did they take vs. the amount of psychedelic drugs they wrote about?

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:44 (seventeen years ago)

are you a narc?

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:48 (seventeen years ago)

for the record, nobody in monster magnet ever took drugs, ever.

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:58 (seventeen years ago)

city gardens lol

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:58 (seventeen years ago)

crappy quality but there's so little live footage of the band with mcbain, dude was such a fucking animal on the gtr

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 07:05 (seventeen years ago)

for the record, nobody in monster magnet ever took drugs, ever.

really??? That's so f'ing insane!

never dropped acid, picked it up a couple times tho... (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 07:11 (seventeen years ago)

I mean a good 60% of their songs are about pot and/or acid...I was just wondering how much of it, as with any band, was part of the act.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 07:12 (seventeen years ago)

in the parking lot at a wisconsin atomic bitchwax show i saw a van side door slide open, spilling spumes of smoke out like in some cheech & chong joke. down stepped whoever the guitarist was who replaced ed mundell, grinning to high heaven. i can only imagine what touring was like for the main band

kamerad, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 07:22 (seventeen years ago)

yeah it was all just dumb luck, they somehow figured out what sounds totally awesome when you're high as a kite without ever taking anything

(okay I can't keep this up much longer)
