I don't know who Dan Ross is.

The kings are:

John Fahey
Bert Jansch
Martin Carthy

...IMO

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 12 February 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean there are probably guitarists who are faster or flashier or smoother but those three probably invented what the faster and flashier and smoother players are playing

Robbie Basho is amazing, but his material is very uneven; Stefan Basho Jurghans is even more amazing, and his material is consistently powerful.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 12 February 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the acoustic stuff....a lot. Don Ross

Currituck County

dlp9001, Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I second Currituck County. Kevin Barker is remarkably talented, and keeps getting better. Think Clarence White crossed with John Fahey. And unlike Fahey, Patton, Hopkins, et al., Kevin's still alive and young.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Alive and young? oh no, we can't have that can we?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Great ones above; add Doc Watson as a personal fave, and have a look at something tasty on DVD:

God I love Doc Watson! There was this weird album whose name I can't recall that was mostly kinda lame but had a jam or two with Doc Watson and Bootsy fucking Collins dueting and good lord those were good jams! Their voices sounded so great together.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and as for the Searching, I must point everyone in the direction of Chet Atkins.

Tommy Emmanuel, the best there is...not taking into account lots of classical/flamenco guitarists.

TomB (TomB), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Tommy Emmanuel seconded.

Jole (Jole), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, I was going to say Doc Watson. Don't forget Merle, though.
Chet Atkins wasn't too bad either. Another great finger picking guy no one would think of is Glen Campbell ("Tequila" - The Champs) If Knoffler's playing can be called picking, count him too.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like the blues, but i LOVE Mississippi John Hurt

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 14 February 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

While you might not think of them as people using the Merle Travis picking style, both Jeff Beck and Lindsey Buckingham both utilize that technique.

earlnash, Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yes! "never going back again"... like knoppfler, no pick for LB.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

One of us going to spell Knopfler's name correctly yet.
