only one dead guy?

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, my editor at Penthouse said, "the
advertising folks have asked me to get a bit more
urban and hip with the music coverage."

hicks don't beat off no more

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I find these results more interesting and less predictable than the Pazz and Jop, actually, but I'm not sure why. Glad about Rodney Crowell, though. (If anything, read it for Frank Kogan's "burn the fuckin' house down" quote.)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad Kathleen Edwards's album placed higher than Lucinda Williams.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Banner - that's great. No Bubba though.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it took at least four voters to get up to 55 - 15 points for a #1 choice - and likely got several more. (And probably'd have gotten more still if more people'd thought to allow themselves to vote for it.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"population me" was robbed!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ging country & rap,

all that shit I do about
oh my poor poor life

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I had Bubba on my singles list, but took him off. Wouldn't-a mattered, though, because I would have voted for "She Tried" instead of "Comin' Round."

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - the milwaukee bucks are your poor poor life? (matt cibula = aka sidney moncrief?)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

sidney moncrief my ass; I'm more like bob lanier's size 27 shoes RIGHT UP YOUR GEORGIAN ASS

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(you know, like in Lanier: The Declining Years) (fun fact: he made ONE three-pointer in his career!)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoakam's career arc has been interesting. It's like trad/pop-dalliance/trad. I liked Population Me a lot, but nothing he's released since This Time has affected me as much; both his slickest sounding and most commercially successful record. (I think that last point is true, isn't it?)

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

we got rasheed now matt - DON'T TRY IT

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm more tickled by the idea of a Trent Reznor song topping a country music poll. Wouldn't have thought THAT exactly ten years ago (thinking of my extremely impatient self counting down the remaining days to the release of The Downward Spiral).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what's more, after the last ten years, I'm somewhat tickled that an incongruous country cover can come off better than gimmicky.

Huckleberry, Friday, 13 February 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Country-ish albums I've heard so far this year that knock me the fuck out: Allison Moorer, The Duel. Oh snap, this one's really good.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

this year, like in the last, uh, 10 weeks?
uh, I'm gonna stump for this one again even though it actually came out last Sept, but it was nominated for a Juno, I think under Jazz???
Great Uncles of the Revolution Blow the House Down

huck, Friday, 13 February 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it comes out in April, I just got the advance two days ago. Between her and her sister Shelby, they're clearly the best country family still living.

Damn, I just noticed that Patty Loveless has TWO of the TOP TEN singles and the #2 album! She's the freakin' OutKast of country music!Retitle this thread please! (Sorry for all the !s here, but it's really a good record.)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't trust Shelby Lynne after the Glen Ballard album.

Huck, Friday, 13 February 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, get over it, Glen Ballard rules forever because of "On the Rebound"
if you're really that hard up for "authenticity", Huck, Shelby wrote and produced all of Identity Crisis, did all the voices on it herself, and played all the guitars and drums herself. one-woman labor of love, great songs in all styles, really personal and stuff.
but "On the Rebound" does rule.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

pah, authenticity is for art dealers! i just thought the record sorta sucked. like, it was boring and stuff. and since that was the first I heard from Lynne (though I'd heard OF thanks to all the stuff from the album before), well, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.
so probably the only way I'll even give anything else by her a chance is if I put it on by accident, hear it on the radio (ain't gonna happen 'round here), or have it forced upon me as the only alternative to Teitur.

Huck, Friday, 13 February 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - the artwork totally redeemed that glen ballard album!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 13 February 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it should have been called "Love, Shelby's Ass."

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I Am Shelby Lynne was/is massively overrated, by the way. It's pretty good, but it hasn't aged well.
