If Screw Goes Pop...

ok me and my former tussin-chuggin' buds are just FASCINATED by the rise of screw (that Voice article awhile back got bounced around plenty). One of my pals actually made a short doc called TUSSUMENTARY or something back in college, so we're all excited about the idea that DXM might finally get some real pop exposure.

One big thing we've been wondering is which pop figures would actually ENDORSE this shit, if any? Folks like Ludacris are already seen as dirrty hedonists, but could someone like Timberlake ever be voicing his approval of swisha? It's LEGAL. Could indie rock get on the bandwagon? Metal? How far can this brand of downer go?

And if Almost Famous had acknowledged Bangs' fondness for the stuff, would we be hearing the phrase "Lester Bangin'" on more albums? Please?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

dxm is really different from drank, which is a codeine-promethazine mixture or some other opiate (hydrocodone sometimes??). the only similarities are that they both come as syrups and they're both anti-tussives.

cthg, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ludacris:

i'm leaning like the tower of pisa, the syrup squeezer
come close to my stash, and get treated as if I'm ebenezer
i'm throwed, blowed,
matter-of-fact let's call this the thrower potion
i'm screwed up so no wonder things are in slower motion

clllthg, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping this was about the Al Goldstein rag.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of screw going pop and screw DJ's then proceeding to slow these records down even more. Soon all songs will consist solely of infrasonic vibrations.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

is there any screw yet that ISN'T a "remix"? I'd like to hear albums that are ONLY available in the screw context, that are meant to only be heard that way.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But then how do you know if it was screwed?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

and what non-hip-hop artists can you see utilizing the concepts? I know it's already somewhat been done. Some early Led Zep was actually slowed down a bit in the mix so that it would be heavier.

Dude, I ONLY have the Screwed version of MTA and I'd totally know they'd been fucking with it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

coming up soon: the S&C version of Baby Bash's Tha Smokin' Nephew. no, I am not kidding. sure, he's Houston and all, but a screwed "Suga Suga" is almost too much to comprehend/hope for.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd totally know they'd been fucking with it

...if I wasn't aware it was a "remix album."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what immediately comes to mind is dj vadim, especially the first album where he puts slowed-down samples of the pope over super-slow, spacious beats. not really the same as s+c, granted.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

plus screw isn't just a remix style but an endorsement of some very low-class (and legal!) drugs. I'm curious if that could cross over too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Not so legal. It's a crime to possess prescription-only pharmaceuticals.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

actually that's why I got this stuff confused with tussin. Which is sooo legal. I could have sworn I've heard the stuff brought up in relation to screw as well.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Live To Tell" by Madonna sounds great screwed.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there is big crossover potential because as anyone who played with their parents record player remembers slowing things down sounds KEWL. (Of course their parents dont have record players any more, doh).

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

anth. mic. most screw shit is only screw (not available as a regular speed version). is that what you mean? the original screw tapes from ten years ago have original productions on them that didn't come out as regular speed version.

the reason people drop screwed versions of their records is to move units in houston (and dallas and san antonio and baton rouge and new orleans). because it's kind of like the de facto sound for a certain scene, kind of. do you know what i mean?? (everything is available screwed. mike watts does r&b comps, too. and you can get a bootleg screwed version of anything)

cltlktg, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god. Please don't bring up Madonna in relation to this stuff. please.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i actually have a tape somewhere that i made in the 80's of screwed pop hits. that's how i know that madonna song sounds cool like that.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think the music has that much to do with drank anymore, either, if it ever did. it's just a cool thing to play up when you write an article on it.

cllthg, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

dj screw had phil collins songs on his tapes!

clthg, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

obviously it had something to do with it but i meant it wasn't the inmspiration or anything.

dlcthg, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The distinctive wisdom of the armchair chemist.

George Smith, Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Speeding things up is kewl too of course.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 12 February 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: DJ Screw vs. David Seville

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 12 February 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Screw with a supplemental tank of helium while recording.

George Smith, Thursday, 12 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My copy of Cool Edit Pro has transform presents for screw and helium.

George Smith, Thursday, 12 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I see a market here. Digital studio plug-ins for codeine, dextromethorphan, helium, nitrous, ether, barbital, fentanyl, gypsum, nutmeg, listerine, listerine sans phenol, Nyquil, liquid nitrogen, oil soap, ricin, warfarin, strychnine, quinine, small doses of arsenicals, nicotine gum, ascorbic acid and Ritalin -- just to start.

George Smith, Thursday, 12 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

what would ricin sound like? can someone tell me where they grow castor beans?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

An eruption of very repetitive noises of menacing timbre, and then silence. You can order castor beans, 10/pack from Gurney's Seed Nursery -- www.gurneys.com

George Smith, Thursday, 12 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm packin' a glock believe it or not I'm ready to bust
And down here we drink purple (And we drink that Tuss)

gh, Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

In my pants, a crabcake, and I have to piddles
'Cuz out here we drink Pabst, but cut with skittles.

well, Sunn0)), Isis, etc. are pretty much just.... screwed metal...

OCP (OCP), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say that. When I reviewed the Teeth of Lions Rule The Divine album I said summat about it being like a Sabbath album on an old dansette at 16.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 13 February 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

so hold up!
you better get your own style!
cos we been bumpin screw down here for a while...

, Friday, 13 February 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)
