Anyone have any opinions about her? I know Gainsbourg wrote a bunch of songs for her, and I often see her "1959-63" and "1965-69" compilation CDs for under $10, so I'm wondering....

well, i've a couple of her lps, she's alright i guess. la valse des is a classic. i think that dates before those comps would cover, unfortunately. i guess someone like her sort of falls through the cracks because she's not fun in the yeye/dutronc/hallyday way, not powerful like piaf or brel, her existentialist pose seems pretty dated next to serge and fontaine, and she's just inferior to barbara.

if all you're going on is the serge connection, and you don't know brigitte fontaine, barbara, or "magali noel chant boris vian" either, i would respectfully steer you to one of those first, unless you enjoy aznavour, who i think is a better comparison than gainsbourg for greco's dry yet warm sexuality. and the songs serge wrote for her are not performed or produced in such a way that a non-francophone would immediately see the connection to our hero.

Thanks for your thoughts (especially the aznavour connection). I love Brigitte Fontaine, but haven't heard of Barbara. Greco was recommended to me by someone who said she sounded like Francoise Hardy, so I was intriqued. I couldn't find much info on the web...

crap, just reread this and am horrified by a major brainfart

i meant MONTAND not aznavour. as in the warm yet a bit detached singing style, emphasis on STYLE, mixing cabaret with nat cole style jazz singing

two years pass...
bump. I recently heard her cover of Gainsbourg's "La Javanaise" and I want to hear more. Where do I go?
