Oh I was just thinking songs. Do they have ten good albums?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I can think of four good songs.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to pick invidual songs,...`cos I'm difficult like `dat.

1. "Death Valley `69"
2. "Teenage Riot"
3. "Expressway to Yr. Skull"
4. "Titanium Expose"
5. "Into the Groovey" (as Ciccone Youth)
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

Heh. I can't do ten. Fuck Sonic Youth.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Dirty at 5 and 7? Please. Everyone who's anyone knows it's top 4. Goo belongs much higher as well. Placing Confusion atop an undeserved pedestal would be embracing a 'trying too hard to be cool' kind of pretension.

JesusMaryChain, Friday, 13 February 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit, I forgot about the Whitey Album! I loved it!

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Bubblegum
In The Kingdom #19
Youth Against Fascism
Junkie's Promise
The Empty Page
Disconnection Notice
Teenage Riot
No Queen Blues
Koka Neon Kamera Sutra
'Cross the Breeze

Kool Thing and The Sprawl get points for funny Kim spoken-word bits, but the songs are meh.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

all that bullshit about Dirty being top 4 is FALSE. definitely their worst album!! it has two good songs and lots of awful ones!

1. confusion is sex
2. evol
3. washing machine
4. bad moon rising
5. daydrean nation
6. 1000 leaves

8. murray street

10. experimental jet set

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

We've actually already done a POX songs-

Sonic Youth OP10

but I'm bored so I'll take a stab at albums

Daydream Nation
Confusion in Sex
Bad Moon Rising
Washing Machine
Sister
Evol
Murray Street
Walls Have Ears
NYC Ghosts & Flowers
Goo

I don't care so much for Dirty, EJST&NS, & A Thousand Leaves. I'll head "JesusMaryChain" off and note that, yes, my love of Confusion Is Sex is genuine and everlasting. I can't believe it but, big a fan as I am, I still have never gotten around to that Ciccone Youth album.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Death Valley `69" is the best thing they ever did.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

1 - x.: any song where kim gordon makes a sound like kkkxkxgsgsxk, only it's a vowel.

x+1: something off sister

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh c'mon Alex, Sonic Youth sound just like tons of bands you like and love.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

...only those bands are more interesting.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Evol
Sister
Confusion is Sex
Daydream Nation
Bad Moon Rising altough Death Valley Rules
Dirty
Goo

I give up I didnt even like washing machine and hated NY City Ghosts.

Loved Sonic Youth in the 80's and early 90's though.

Thought Kim Gordon was a goddess. I am such a dork

Alex probably thinks Sonic Youth is too "Arty" although Killing Joke are a bunch of arty fucks too.

hector (hector), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I just think Sonic Youth are too boring and pretentious. There's nothing wrong with being arty.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

OW!

hector (hector), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

In what way, exactly, are Sonic Youth pretentious? Boring, i can understand. Over rated and self-indulgent(at times), yeah...but pretentious? I just don't understand why this tag always gets applied to them.

blablablah, Friday, 13 February 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh please.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It's so selfexplanatory that it's rarely if ever actually explained!

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Friday, 13 February 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

For instance they think they're some kind of FREE JAZZ outfit! Pretentious! Yet maybe Evan Parker and William Hooker and Borbetomagnus would agree!

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Friday, 13 February 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't actually thinking of the test "best" SY albums, per se. I was more thinking list ten and rank them. I think 1000 leaves is pretty bad. Goo is really bad and annoying for the most part. Dirty had about 3 bad/mediocore songs, and about 3 brilliant songs. A couple good. Washing Machine is very underrated -- 'Diamond Sea' is fucking great. Evol is slightly overrated. So is Sister. But they are both very good (Sister is better). And Daydream Nation is the purest form of brilliance. Please help me find an album as brilliant as DN. Please. (Or at least something that leans in the same direction musically.)
I too tired to remember all the names but they have at least 20 very good songs, Alex.

Jaromil (Jaromil), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf, their tenure with butch vig is all killer!!

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And Daydream Nation is the purest form of brilliance.

Ummm...a bit of an overstatement, that. But, I'll add a sixth to my list, that being "Silver Rocket". I just lost interest with each progressive album after Goo (in fact, Good was the last one of theirs I bothered getting). I don't actively loathe Sonic Youth, I just think they completely lost their muse after a while. I liked Sonic Youth when they seemed more dangerous and weird and unduly fascinated with Punk Rock and the Manson Family murders and all Richard Kern-ish sorta stuff. Once they became poster children for the "wooly hat all year round" crowd, I just couldn't be bothered. Moreover, their music to an incalculable nosedive into cripplingly ennui-inducing territory. I blame Kim Gordon.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops, Goo was the last one...not Good, and it wasn't very. Good, that is.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

kkkxkxgsgsxk to you alex

kim in nyc (gcannon), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If I could decipher that, I'd be accordingly (a) chuffed or (b) offended.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok. You do have a point Alex. They have lost a lot of their Punk, and become more fascinated by the infinitude of their collective bellybuttons. Yet: I would still argue that Washing Machine is a very good album, including Kim Deal's guest appearance. And that Murray Street is quite good. I still have hope they will start drinking the same water they did when they made Daydream. Or whatever. That was a very special album. I haven't heard a lot of other music that could walk the tightrope between medlodicism and fucking angry noiz like that shit. Can you be too old to ever recapture your greatness?...The Stones do think so. The Stones and SY should makes an album together. hehehe...

Jaromil (Jaromil), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any big fans of SYR

Jaromil (Jaromil), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, as someone suggested above, my beloved Cop $hoot Cop probably wouldn't have existed had there not been a Sonic Youth (though one could argue C$C owe more to Swans, Pussy Galore, Foetus and Neubauten, but there was certainly a chunk of Sonic Youth's aesthetic at work there too).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stones should jam with SY on the Simpsons. And Lee should kill Mick Jagger. That would bring the punk back. And then Steve Shelley should set the corpse on fire. yes that's it.
But Keith would punch Steve and break his glasses.

Jaromil (Jaromil), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm.....the Stones are still so entrenched in their love for the Blues that Sonic Youth almost singularly personify what Keef would consider an abomination of rock'n'roll (which, incidentally, is what made Sonic Youth cool).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. And they are really old. So they should fight eachother. There isn't enough fighting between bands on bands. There is, of course, tons of infighting in bands (We've all seen VH1). But I would pay big money to see The Strokes fight Metallica. No weapons. Just a no-holds barred ass-whooping. I have created a new thread to discuss this particular whimsy. I just kind of radomnly picked those bands, but: there is definetly a market for this. Madonna vs. J-Lo. Belle and Sebastian vs. Simon and Garfunkel. Wouldn't this be fun? Who do you want to see fight?

dlp9001, Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

After "Dirty", Sonic Youth seemed to slow things down a bit and try and get into more textural territory. The mooody things on "Evol" are great, but I don't think they were as successful in the later records.

Some of the extended songs the later records, which seemed to be an attempt at doing something like some of those long jammed out krautrock things like Ash Ra Tempel are kind of boring without the bong. I just don't have the patience, I suppose. In a live setting those things carry over a bit better.

To me, I think the thing I miss most about the later music is it just isn't nearly as intense. Steve Shelley taps into the ghost of Keith Moon at times in the early records with all of the rolling rhythms. Later period Sonic Youth is just more laid back, spacey and kind of stoned sounding, which isn't a bad thing, but I don't think it is their strength.

There are also a handful of songs on the later albums where I think Kim's vocals are very annoying and Lee doesn't sing much. So put those as two notches against quality control.

Sonic Youth were an older band than their peers even in the 80s, not that it really matters much.

"Hold that Tiger" is a good live cd worth checking out, if the Sonic records you like are Evol through Daydream Nation.

stirmonster, Saturday, 14 February 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't listen to sonic youth much these days but this thread made me dig out their records. fuck me! 'flower' sounds better than ever. that song says everything riot girrrl managed over several years in three minutes. i LOVE it when kim gordon unleashes the power.

and, after 'i wanna be your dog' (and several ac / dc songs), 'kill yr idols' has possibly thee greatest riff in the history of white boy guitar music.

stirmonster, Saturday, 14 February 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I really loved the stuff up through daydream nation and slacking off a bit from there through dirty and goo and then just lost interest. I loved the clangy intensity of the early albums. Cotton crown was a great tune too. Where they almost had a popish melodicy covered in noise and not just fuzz but sheets of sound.

A great love song, I guess.

hector (hector), Saturday, 14 February 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

1. daydream nation
2. sonic death: sonic youth live
3. sister
4. goo
5. whitey album

can't think of another 5.

I agree..."Cotton Crown" is great. D'ya think the band would have turned a corner had Kim's crush on LL Cool J been fulfilled? Wasn't that right around the time she and Moore were married/became an official couple? "Kool Thing" my ass...she just wanted one of those diamond solitaire engagement rings from ole' Thurston Howl the Turd.

it's amazing how much you can learn about a person's musical aesthetics by seeing how they rank their favorite sonic youth albums

I don't know why, but I've never really gotten into Evol or Sister. They certainly aren't bad albums, but they've never really snagged my attention like early/mid-period SY does. Consequently, I haven't really listened to either of those albums much and their absence from my list isn't a comment on their quality or lack thereof:

1. Experimental Jet Set Trash And No Star
2. Daydream Nation
3. Dirty
4. Goo
5. Murray Street
6. Bad Moon Rising
7. Washing Machine
8. The Whitey Album
9. Confusion Is Sex
10. Sonic Nurse

3. Evol
4. Daydream Nation
5. Washing Machine
6. Dirty
7. SYR 2
8. Kill Yr Idols EP
9. 1000 Leaves
10. Murray Street

People who like Goo more than Dirty are just inexplicable to me.

I haven't heard Nurse enough to decide if it should be on this list, I think not.
