So I see from their website that the Mountain Goats will be playing the London ICA on April 1... but does anyone know when tickets go on sale and how much they will be? And will John be giving a discount to ILMers?

Mog, Friday, 13 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey now, be cool -- JD's shows are worth the full price easy. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

its worthwhile show but john gets 'moody' afterwards. when i went over to say hi he was slapping his p.a./p.r. screaming YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DOSE ME WITH EVIAN DURING THE SHOW NOT THIS CHEAP ASS SHIT.

jimmy the sainted, Friday, 13 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it's very much 'the jo-d experience backstage'. his entourage is at twenty five. i asked him if i could talk to him and he said 'the management would not like that' - referring to himself!

jimmy the sainted, Friday, 13 February 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to see the mountain goats when they last played at the ICA (that was abt a year ago, maybe more). i got my tickets on the door, they were abt 10 quid but can't remember exactly (a couple of support acts there too) (i think cozen is also coming down from glasgow for atp).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

jimmy the sainted you have given me the best laffs I've had all week - have your crew call my crew, 'cause in a few, etc.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

john when r u playing the ica? and london, general-like?

i will put an email in to my editor and see if i can get a review. you did have runner up single of the week so it might be easier and won't die this time. i never collected kill fee on that show because of guilt!

jimmy the saints, Friday, 13 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

English & European dates are all here: http://www.cnltouring.co.uk/

see you soon!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to the NYC gig. Anyone else?

scott m (mcd), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

will you have any time for FAP j0hn?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio I MIGHT - it depends on my health - I become massively hypochondriac while on tour. But London's conventiently right before a day off! so possibly after the show - unless pubs are closed by then, in which case, before the show! Really wanna hang out and talk free jazz, which kinds of cheeses are most delicious, etc.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 13 February 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, we can talk lots of other stuff. been listening to dancehall lately. but anyway, take care and hope to see you.

(most pubs close at around 11pm but maybe not at the ICA, would have to check on that)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 14 February 2004 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Crikey, you're playing Stockton, hope you're not bringing anything valuable with you. I will have to make the effort to make it that night.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 14 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

nice'n'sleazy

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 14 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and when are you coming back to Seattle? Shouldn't we get a visit on this tour just for the John Vanderslice connection?

Scott, Sunday, 15 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Madison. Two weeks. John. Dude.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 15 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

West coast is in May, Scott. Seattle's on the list.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 15 February 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

scott, Sunday, 15 February 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

StanM, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

Bah, I'm in Glasgow on 8th/9th December but back home on 10th.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

Which song will be the RINGLE!!!!!?

bendy, Thursday, 22 November 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

monkey song (2007 remix)

electricsound, Thursday, 22 November 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I was there. Infectiously enthusiastic performance, A+, will definitely go to more tMG shows. Only got into them around The Sunset Tree so v pleased to get four songs off that.

The other acts were all kinds of interesting. One guy doing Scottish trad folk songs on guitar, unaccompanied except for one song where he had a guy playing tambourine and a girl playing what looked like a zither or dulcimer, but was played with a bow and sounded like a regular fiddle. Started off like a regualr folk song but by the end had descended into a maelstrom of guitar noise, dissonant fiddle, and the woman screaming like a banshee at the top of her voice. It was hard to keep from laughing, which sounds mean but really I think it's great when music produces that kind of intense reaction, regardless of whether one is on the same wavelength as the perofmers or not.

ledge, Sunday, 9 December 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I saw them too, really good, fantastic venue too, couldn't believe I'd not been there before. Alasdair Roberts was really good, wasn't so taken by the other two acts though.

Neil S, Sunday, 9 December 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

*hopes for a show in belgium soon*

StanM, Sunday, 9 December 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, yeah, that looks like a good setlist! "Cobscook Bay" blew me away when I saw him play it a few months ago.

toby, Sunday, 9 December 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

nine months pass...

so anyone else thinking of going tonight? i am considering it but will probably back out if nobody is keen.

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:19 (seventeen years ago)

(I found out about this in today's Metro...don't let it be said that free papers are completely worthless!)

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:19 (seventeen years ago)

that i didn't go to the glasgow gig last year is a source of irritation and woe.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

Going, where, when?

the pinefox, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

(and if i were in london, i'd categorically be there tonight.)

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

Where?

the pinefox, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

the ULU near Goodge Street

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

at 7

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

yes, I see, now:
http://www.barflyclub.com/ULU/whatson/event/19324.aspx

£13.50!

the pinefox, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

If this means that the geezer, John D, is in town, then I would be happy to see him and hear his US election views in person for a change.

the pinefox, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

yeah the price was my reservation too, if yr reading j0hn, don't expect me to buy a t-shirt or anything ;-)

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

sold out no?

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

xpost (ah well)

you miserable sods. i don't think that's so bad at all.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

screw u metro

(unless this is one of those "on the door only" jobbies)

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

It's true, that all prices are relative, and we live in an age of increasing prices for eg basic groceries anyway. One can afford this price, probably.

And if the John D geezer was reading then I would most definitely not want to say anything hurtful about his work, and 'that's way too expensive!' might come into that category.

But if I was playing somewhere and it was £13.50, would he go? ... Nah, I doubt it.

the pinefox, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

i want to go and it's so close to work that i can hang around until the doors open and try my luck on the door/outside. i will be royally pissed off if i miss this though.

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

(In fact if I was playing somewhere and it was free, I guess he still probably wouldn't go)

the pinefox, Monday, 15 September 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

i'm goin'.

›̊-‸‷̅‸-- (ledge), Monday, 15 September 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago)

so will tickets be available on the door?

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

as i said i'm going to go along and find out. unless you feel like giving them a call and reporting back?

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)

£13.50 seems quite reasonable for a London gig these days! I also found out about this in the Metro this morning but I'm working in Brighton today so I'm not going to make it. Plus I'm already going to 2 gigs this week as it is.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

Thinking about it, but I'm tiiiiiiired.

lol (HI DERE), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

I know, man, I know, but I played three sets of tennis this morning and now I'm back in flannel pants just barely strong enough to type.

me, earlier

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

I saw him a few years ago in Madison and it was only like $7 or something, but I'm telling you it's worth it, John puts on a good show. (I'm trying to remember how to convert fancy L's into fancy S's in my head but it's not working, thougth I seem to remember that 13 quid would get you, what, two meals at Burger King? JD's worth at least three!)

LIBERATION CRUTCH!!1

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 15 September 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Monday, 15 September 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Monday, 15 September 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

just called. no returns. tempted to turn up and see if anyone has any spares but i'm not sure if i'm tempted enough.

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

sounds like a longshot, that

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Monday, 15 September 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

mailing J0hn would be longer. ah well, serves me right for dithering.

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Monday, 15 September 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

It were great. Dude is so energetic and enthusiastic, he's just a joy to watch. Slapping his face in the middle of - oh I forget which song - and the sweat flying off, shining under the stage lights - beautiful! Didn't seem like a particularly long set but it was all gold.

›̊-‸‷̅‸-- (ledge), Monday, 15 September 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

Damn. I ended up staying in, watching The Seven-Year Itch, and eating a whole bag of potato chips.

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

Living all these years in a shit college town I expected to go see A Guy And His Acoustic Guitar and be, at best, moderately moved (already big fan of TMG by this point), and was completely knocked over by his energy and for a lack of a better word charm. Probably too many open mic nights at the What's Up Lounge in (clink-clank noise) Mankato, Minnesota, but I was really surprised by how much forward motion and winning interplay you can get out of just John and a bass player.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

september 9th at the koko. Have for once been pretty diligent and sorted out tickets well in advance. Suggest fap.

flanimal collective (Upt0eleven), Monday, 7 June 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

Depends how close you are to the venue. Koko's website says headliners are usually 8:30 - 9, experience says a bit later than that, but not much.

Wandering Boy Poet, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 12:17 (fourteen years ago)

A+++ would see again.

Madchen, Thursday, 26 May 2011 10:34 (fourteen years ago)

does any band have two joyous audience singalong anthems that are more affectively opposed than 'this year' and 'no children'?

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 21 November 2015 04:36 (ten years ago)

btw these guys are the best. especially in these hard times, daddy

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 21 November 2015 05:00 (ten years ago)

was cool how 'foreign object' became a singalong anthem as well
