Dare You!

I had this great idea for a thread a couple of days ago but can't actually think of anything to start it off with. (So maybe it isn't that great!)

Anyway here's the idea - you dare another named ILMer to listen to a track of your choosing. Only one track. It can be one you think they'd like or not, up to you. If they accept the dare then they come back and post about it. Otherwise they are rubbish and you can point and laugh at them.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Geir Hongro to listen to Funkadelic's "Funk gets stronger Pt 1." - As melodic as funk gets.

Jedmond, Friday, 13 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was going to add a caveat to say don't all pick Geir!!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess - Hey Ya!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Scott Seward to listen to El-P's "Oxycotin" (not to be confused with "Oxycotin pt 2", featuring Cage; this one is floating around slsk on the "Collecting the Kid" album). I want to see what will win out: Scott's dislike of El-P (who does not actually have vocal duties on this track) or his love of creepy sludgy psych rock.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Jess' problem is that he hasn't heard Hey Ya!

I know Geir is an easy, but I honestly think he could actually love that track - anybody who says they rate melody has to (and if he shakes his arse while listening to the mel/at even better.

Jedmond, Friday, 13 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico I will listen to derek bailey's 'ballads' tonight to select a tune for you to listen to.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I want $$$ to listen to the New Pornographers' "The Laws Have Changed" and/or Deftones' "Back in School"!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry - replace "want" with "quadruple double bacon burger dog dare", please.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist Scientist, I dare you to listen to that "Get Low (Merengue Mix)" that Frank Kogan has been going on about! I'm not certain you'll like it but it might raise a smile. It's by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

*waits v.v.v.patiently. for all the pointing and laughing to start eventually*

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the merengue mix of get low is so damned funny - it's a hilarious track

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You've probably heard this already, but Tico Tico, I dare you to listen to Toshiyuki Honda's "El Bombero" from the relatively recent anime Metropolis (it's the fire fighting music).

We expect the people dared to report back on what they right?

Jedmond, Friday, 13 February 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i already told him to listen to the get low merengue mix! he did not have a strong reaction.

clthg, Friday, 13 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist Scientist, I dare you to listen to that "Get Low (Merengue Mix)" that Frank Kogan has been going on about! I'm not certain you'll like it but it might raise a smile. It's by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz.

I'm willing to listen, but not if I have to invest any bucks in it. Can someone send me an MP3 of it? You can just e-mail it to the address I have listed here. (I have never been able to download soulseek for some reason, probably a firewall thing.) I did listen to a 30 second sample of it, I think. Meanwhile I will look for a complete mp2.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 13 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Southall- "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere", Alan Jackson.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(if I'm correct, Nick, you'd despise that song intensely)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex In NYC: John Zorn's version of Ornette Coleman's "Chronology" from the album "Spy Vs. Spy". One minute and 8 seconds that might just open a portal into a huge scary new world....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard a bit of Zorn's work (mostly the Naked City stuff), but I don't believe I've heard this track. I'm certainly intrigued, though....big scary new world? Count me in. Stay tuned.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 February 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico have you downloaded Journey's shameless Abba pastiche "Mother, Father" yet

dave q, Saturday, 14 February 2004 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

HaHa, stop kidding around, good Americans buy music. They don't download!

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Saturday, 14 February 2004 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist I might put it up on PopNose.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 14 February 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find that Journey song DQ :(

I will look for this El Bombero thing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 14 February 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Tico Tico, I'm not sure if I should say it, but I've never even noticed that page before.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 14 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mother, Father" is on Escape, which should be available for a quarter and is well worth it for a pop fan.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 14 February 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa W, I dare you to listen to "Psalm" by Larry Lake (perf Lawrence Cherney).

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

on some thread I dared anybody and everybody to listen to Limp Bizkit's "Livin' It Up" and give me a detailed reaction. Nobody did.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Where can that be found?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Julio D' to listen to Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas"

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 15 February 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling, I dare you to listen to Scribe's "Stand Up" - seems to be available on slsk . . .

etc, Sunday, 15 February 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've found both Mother Father and El Bombero now.

Rockist that page is pretty new and also I've not been trying to publicise it cos of bandwidth issues.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico, I dare you to listen to the Wonder Stuff's "Who Wants To Be The Disco King?"

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(i chose that song because, yeah, i know you hate(d) the Stuffies, but i thought this song stood above the rest, and has a really nice chorus and ending)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the only Stuffies song from that time I never heard!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jedmond: I like "El Bombero" a lot, it's like Mr Driller playing jazz, or - since you gave me the firefighting context - an EyeToy game with a hose or something. I'm glad I listened to it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Mother Father - beyond the first 30 seconds I'm not sure about the ABBA thing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the fuck is Alan Jackson, Dom? I double dare you to listen to E2-E4 by Manuel Gottshing.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 15 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad you like "El Bombero", I came across it while writing a Uni assignment on music/sound (I can't remember) in film. I find chanting Japanese children always catches peoples attention when used in a DJ set.

If it helps you picture the scene better: Picture an evil scientists labrotory on fire as thousands of half spider half tennis ball robots pour down a staircase before merging together to form giant fire engines.

Jedmond, Sunday, 15 February 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

esoj, I dare you to listen to "The Eighties" by David Fonseca!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, Dan, and assorted goths: search for "Silence 4" in the file sharing program of your choice. I dare you to listen to whatever part of their ouevre is available!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Swygart, I dare you to listen to "This Year Is Mine" by Marit Bergman (Swedish Indie-Pop goodness!)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

jbr (if she's still around) - "A Queda Do Império" by Vitorino (it's in my miscalenous folder on slsk, username "boyo_rf")

(ok, I'll stop now)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico: dare you to listen to 'when your lover has gone' by derek bailey, from his 'ballads' record (its track 3).

''I dare Julio D' to listen to Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas"''

can you name a record with that track on and if I find it I'll listen.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - "I Believe in Father Christmas" is on Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Works, Vol.2, e.g., but it's also on several ELP compilations.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 15 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare you to listen to whatever part of their ouevre is available!

The band itself is called Silence 4?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

tico i dare you to listen to casiotone for the painfully alone's "toby, take a bow".

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I may have to take the pointing and laughing in that particular case.

Rockist the Merengue Mix is on PopNose now.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Where can that be found?
"Livin' It Up" is on Chocolate Starfish. It opens with an Eagles sample and Fred Durst dedicating the song to Ben Stiller. Later, after dissing Trent Reznor and Christina Aguilera, he announces that he's seen Fight Club 28 times and that he's a renegade riot getting out of control (he also dreams of women drinking champagne from seashells and notes that there's a microphone machete in the back of his truck). I think it's one of his most entertaining rap-rock numbers.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

both tracks I listed I consider to be "good"

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Lex- I have Carina queued.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't want this thread to die. *I* will accept a dare,

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jole, the thread isn't dead; it's just big-boned.

Anyway, Jole, I'm gonna go out on a limb and DARE YOU to give a listen to: Camberwell Now - "Daddy Needs a Throne" (which, conveniently enough, is available on my website, I believe - look on the right side of the page, under DIGITAL LOVE).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Daver! http://www.pickled-egg.co.uk/pop-off-tuesday.htm but not the track I suggested but there are some other MP3's!

Tico, how do I find the Rupee song?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Jole - I have no idea about your music taste so I will arbitrarily dare you to hear "Take Me Home" by Thea Gilmore.

William - I have downloaded the Mates Of State, will pass judgment shortly.

(xposts!)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Daver, go for As Evil Dance.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jole vs. "Daddy Needs a Throne"

Starts in the eighties mode popular on ILM. I like the synth. Drums could be tighter. Vocals are nice. Good song! Rocks out at the end! I think it could have done without the growly bit.

Jole (Jole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(Can anyone suggest offhand somewhere I could upload a 9.4 MB mp3?)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You could zip it up, Sundar, if size is an issue.

I could host it, too, but I wouldn't be able to put it up until later tonight (around 7-8 PM).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

D/L'ing as we speak.

Jole - The Communards - So Cold The Night.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa: I just set up a Soulseek account and put "Psalm" up (I think it's "03 Psalm.mp3"). My user name is "sundar". Let me know if it works.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 26 February 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel - if you're on the 'seek it's in my Soca folder (mymble2) (I'm not actually on now though).

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 26 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico and Geir* (a funny combination, I guess), I dare you to listen to Frankie Ruiz's "Desnudate." This is one of my favorite salsa songs (which makes it one of many, but still). I used to think that it was just a sweet and sentimental song, but it's actually saying (roughly): you done me wrong, stop lying to me, take off your clothes and show me the truth. Or that's roughly how someone explained it. Anyway, it is a very sweet sounding song, but when the percussion comes into the foreground it's so strong.

This is soulseekable.

*And anyone else wanting to sample a salsa song I like.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't accidentally download "Deseandote," which is pretty good, but not as much of a favorite. (This isn't like Arabic titles where you grab anything close.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(One thing about mainstream salsa: I don't think it's possible to like it unless you like timbales.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar: You're never on!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be on tomorrow (Mar 1) from 4:15 pm (EST) till at least 8:30-9. Probably all night though. Let me know if that's any good. (I have to do it from school.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Swygart, I forgot to reply: very much enjoyed that Maow track, it's like a lost Undertones single or something.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 March 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare Tracer Hand to listen to Joe Arroyo's "Rebelion" (which may be mis-spelled as "Rebellion"). Very standard salsa anthem that somehow manages not to get old.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't accidentally download "Deseandote," which is pretty good, but not as much of a favorite. (This isn't like Arabic titles where you grab anything close.)

If this sounds patronizing, let me say that I accidentally downloaded "Deseandote" thinking it was "Desnudate."

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "Desnudate Mujer" the same thing?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes!

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That's prob. the full title. I found it under "Desnudate."

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The song is from 1987, incidentally.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa, I should be logged in now. I should be able to leave my connection on from now on provided no one switches off the computer.

Julio, I dare you to listen to "Life In a Glasshouse" by Radiohead.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 1 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I accept (I was just replying to an email from you).

actually I should make a one CD for these dare tracks and the focus group.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 1 March 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"La Cura" is an allowable substitute for "Desnudate Mujer." In fact, I think the former is a perfect song, which I don't quite feel about the latter. I haven't seen it available on slsk so far.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I dare someone to do a Negative Approach POX thread NOW!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

did you manage to find the scribe, tom?

etc, Monday, 1 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, and I forgot my dares too.

Lex - I was initially a bit "Oh, OK then" about the Fiona Apple track, but I heard it today and it did actually really grab me... I may expand later.

Jole - it's a bit odd, isn't it? Not the kind of thing I'd usually go for at all, but I did like it. Again, may write a bit more later.

And since Southall's ducking out of anything with guitars on - Zan Lyons, "Suicide".

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar: You're not sharing files!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious (if you are out there), I dare you to listen to Grupo Niche's "Han Cogido la Cosa." (Let me know if you can't get hold of it.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My challengee response rate is not very impressive so far.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Gar, I'll get this figured out by tomorrow, I swear. Thanks for your patience Melissa!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a way I could transfer directly to you tomorrow evening?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have MSN messenger?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Scribe and Desnudate have been located and will be reported on later.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Kaito, "Go"

I like it because it has certain Daddino-tugging qualities, namely a spasticized motorik beat and nice shouty bits (and some subliminal cooing). But I feel like I have to wait too long for the payoff (ie, the shouty bits) and by the time the final shouty bits comes on it feels like they milked the gimmick for too long -- the song should've been a minute shorter.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 March 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So, Swygart -- Exuma, "Exuma, The Obeah Man"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico, still waiting. (I would be glad even for a negative response at this point.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Do I take it that "Psalm" didn't go through completely?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, sorry, it did... I don't have a very clear opinion of it though.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
i dare ronan to download aphex twin's "xtal".

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

and tico, i think the "tried by twelve" version you d/led sounds quite far removed from the original. no sitar?

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

did you hear the scribe track, tico? apparently they're using his other big single on CD:UK (I have no idea what this is tho) in yr part of the world; mentalism.

etc, Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone dare me

SLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Thursday, 22 April 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha oliver wang has the scribe track up on his mp3 blog!!! if anyone wants to listen to this & say what they think, it'd really mean something to me & my pathetic curiosity about what furriners think about nz pop music.

etc, Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
This is two years late but I suddenly remembered I had four dares.

Radiohead 'Life in a glasshouse': I never bothered w/them after OK computer but I really enjoyed the backing track right from the beginning flying saucer 'futuristic' bit to a straight jump to the '1930s-type' piano/trumpet/clarinet (all melancholically played, of course). Yorke's voice/paranoid persona rubs me off the wrong way: he does like his 'packed frozen'/sardines metaphor doesn't he? And always so cryptic when he doesn't have to be: he doesn't talk politics but he happens to be EXACTLY doing that, throughout, by not talking. 'But someone's listening in...'. Yeah, the world is man...BUT whatver I loved the drumming slabs w/the clarinet. A great ending so it balances out fine.

My other dare ws Alice Cooper 'give the kid a break'. It could be in the same ball-park as the radiohead: someone's listened in ('must've been something I said') and he's taking him in. Zero-tolerance. Even though there is a rocky-horror vibe and jokes (the backing singers suudenly turning against Alice), its more of a chill - something about that 'in the frying pan' and him reflecting ('some imperfection: in my soul or in my head'). The happy days background just made it all darker.

Greg lake 'I believe in father xmas': like these casio-keyboard bleeps underneath the xmassy brass (?) (round one min in) but I dunno, hate how anything commemorative, like xmas tunes, seems to write itself. Maybe if I heard this round july it might be better. And he reminds me of John Lennon in a 'serious' mode. The ending sounded too long and big and its like he wanted to ram the seriousness and ends up awkward.

This ws all two years ago, so getting me to listen to 'i luv u' when UK garage was sorta uncharted waters for me (even more so than now) ws nice. I loved it straight away. I like 'luv u 2' w/the chinese strings, too. For some reason its really cute w/the "i-i luv u" talking doll voice.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Ha, I never noticed that Julio ever replied. This was kind of a fun idea.
