How does Chaka Khan feel about Kayne West's handling of her sample of "Through the Fire"?

I mean, seriously, it makes her sound like a chipmunk. Think she's upset?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus he's rapping right through the sample.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Considering he kisses her poster in the video, and that she's getting paid a lot of money for a song no one has played in many years, I'd say she's okay with it.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Has S. Reynold mentioned Kanye West's use of vocal samples? - considering his love of finding signs of hardcore in hip-hop.

Jedmond, Friday, 13 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ya think? What if she gave permission before she heard it. And kissing a poster means jack diddley.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG this isn't Alex in NYC at all, it's Chaka Khan posting under his name!!!

Seriously, Alex, first: why do you care a rat's ass? second: this sampling thing is hundreds of years old by now, even sped-up samples! third, most producers don't show any kind of gratitude to the samplees whatsoever, him showing her pic in the video and the graphic that says "thank you." is the biggest tribute since the last time Aja posted a KJ question to you.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

a song no one has played in many years

And rightfully so. I tried it recenty and had to turn it off real quick.

him showing her pic in the video and the graphic that says "thank you." is the biggest tribute since...

Nelly & Kelly had Patti Labelle in their Dilemma video...

JoB (JoB), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I "give a rat's ass" because I fuckin' heard the Kayne West track last night AND CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD TODAY!!!!, which is SERIOUSLY pissing me off. Witness the power of a good hook. That got me thinking: "Gosh, I don't remember Chaka Khan's voice being so damn heliumesque!" So, I went on over to iTunes and played "Through the Fire" and did the math.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

that's true about Patti LaBelle...but she, like the Mighty Thor, automatically appears every time her song is invoked. The Chaka is a gentle, reclusive creature, and must be treated gently.

haha Alex...you like the song in spite of yourself! (sorry if I sounded like an asshole. I didn't mean it. I'm in a weird mood.)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Chaka sang the hook and was in the video on that De La Soul song a few years back so I'd guess she digs the hip-hop or she digs the $.

I dig the sped up girl singing myself, but as noted earlier its been done for a while. I noticed it on a Wu-Tang Forever track recently which was 7 years ago.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex if you think you can't get that out of your head, try "Slow Jamz" with its sped-up Luther hook...that song sticks to you big-time.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

but she, like the Mighty Thor, automatically appears every time her song is invoked

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually kinda like the song, despite the fact that I think Damon Dash is evil incarnate. I never said I hated all Hip Hop, by the way. I also appreciate the fact that Kayne is rapping about actual events and experience, and not about bitches, ho's, playas, etc. And the hook fuckin' works!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But then he says this, "But he wasn't talking bout coke and birds
it was more like spoken word" which always annoys me.

I do think the schtick would wear thin after Kayne's whole album is nothing, but sped up vocal samples. Does it?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"rapping about actual events and experience, and not about bitches, ho's, playas, etc."

Those hoes & bitches aren't imaginary, Alex.

Off-topic: the sample in "Slow Jamz" is LUTHER?!?!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I never said you didn't like hip-hop. (You should know, by the way, that Kanye does in fact rap about drug-dealing and sex on the album. And quite effectively, esp. the former.)

There's a LOT more on the album than just the sped-up sample thing. TONS more.

And yeah, David, it's "A House Is Not a Home."

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I never said you didn't like hip-hop.

I know ya didn't, but it's often a tactic to discourage me from posting on Hip Hop threads (let alone starting ones) to point out that I am not, as a going concern, a Hip Hop fan....which is true for the most part.

Nate not like Kanye record? MATT SMASH NATE

Are you on a "this record's drums sound like ass" trip, Nate? You might be right about that. But this record is very Atmosphere/El-P in terms of its obsessions, and you should try it. (please let certain Kanye-hataz stay off this thread so I can discuss actual lyrics oh god please)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I was mocking Alex in NYC's catchphrase re Killing Joke as a way of mocking his own Kanye-hate

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Let the B2D remix commence

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet: permission!

Here's my quick take on the thing: Kanye West is "a divided soul," officially, the backpacker with a Benz, got Jay-Z and Common on his record, started college but dropped out, yeah yeah blah blah. But I think he's more divided than he knows; he is actually searching for the same things we're all searching for: how to be good and make money at the same time, how to justify the injustice he has suffered and sees on a daily basis with the need to just BE. Everything, from the morose album art to the hopeless/hopeful vibe of many songs (the "fuck you we deal drugz" tune right before "I'll Fly Away"), point to someone who doesn't know how to live except in an old soul song, except sped up to reflect these crazy modern times.

Or some shit like that. Remix that, you mothers.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Kanye disc, but when I played it for my wife she said the lyrics reminded her of "Weird" Al. Not in a bad way, mind you - she loves the album, too - but still ...

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

In the words of Prince, "Chaka mad".

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to think now of lyrics for the Weird Al version of "Slow Jamz."

"I'm gonna eat this Jello
Then I'm gonna say hello
You're gonna have some fish sticks
Then we'll both need breath mints"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the "Through the Wire" video cuz it opens with Kanye getting some takeout at Leon's!! That's like my favorite BBQ place in Chicago. Well, it's between Leon's & DD&S, but Leon's has the way hot burn-your-lips sauce which I love. For some reason I thought he was a west-sider though. The hooks in the two singles so far are insidious and great. I am getting a bit sick having 'em in my head though so I can certainly sympathize with Alex.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

all the Harold's shots are crucial too, that's such a part of the South Side landscape

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard a weird rumour once that kanye was chaka's son. i wonder how these things get started (i know how they get perpetuated).

andrew s (andrew s), Friday, 13 February 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about Hecky's BBQ.

North Side! What.

djdee2005, Friday, 13 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Kanye? Why Wouldye?

(I crack myself up)

I never heard either this or "Slow Jamz" until yesterday, where I heard BOTH twice on the radio. Does he do that "victrola in the back" thing on everything?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I was mocking Alex in NYC's catchphrase re Killing Joke as a way of mocking his own Kanye-hate

You should dose up on Ginko Biloba, as you're obviously having some concentration problems. For a start, it's not my catchphrase (I did not coin it). Secondly, if you'll read above, I have no hate for Kanye. In fact, I admitted to liking the song. Get a grip.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Slow Jamz," meanwhile, is a huge stack of runny, tepid dung.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I probably would like "Slow Jamz" more if they didn't give all that love to Ready For The World. Those fucks watered down "Lady Cab Driver" and I'll never forgive them.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, you're talking smack about the same band that did the ultimate Prince ripoff song ever, "Oh Sheila"? I can never trust you again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

dude "Oh Sheila" is the watered-down "Lady Cab Driver" (check out those riffs!). THAT'S MY WHOLE POINT!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

...which is funny considering "Oh Sheila" came out first.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, fuck, I was thinking of the shit "Mr. Cab Driver" by Lenny Kravitz.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait; so now, Anthony, it's bad to rip off a sound and a riff and water it down and make it into a pop hit? I thought we had gotten beyond that...

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor guy can't win! Even when I'm wrong! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

whaddaya talkin' about? this is the most winning week in Miccio history! he's still struttin'.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Slow Jamz," meanwhile, is a huge stack of runny, tepid dung.

Open your heart, Alex.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

good call, Cibula. It's not bad per se, but to make a pertinent example. I think the LYRICS on Good Charlotte's "Young And The Hopeless" are better than those on Green Day's "Basket Case", and the production actually makes the music more enjoyable too. So while I still enjoy "Basket Case," it almost feels like, for me, "Young And The Hopeless" has superceded it.

"Oh Sheila," on the other hand, has NOTHING on "Lady Cab Driver."

And yes, I'm soooo struttin' (though a review I thought I was supposed to have in the new Blender isn't there :( ).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, if Jamie Foxx wrote the lyric, I'm guessing the inclusion of Ready For The World might have been a joke or something. Call me conservative or whatever, but I'm not sure I want that kind of blunt record collector humor getting on my pop radio.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, Helg3son, that IS Alex with an open heart. he hasn't threatened to roast anyone's progeny over a flaming trashheap or anything.

and hey Miccio, just think of "Oh Sheila" as the "Kids Bop 1" version of "Lady Cab Driver," the one with no sadistic sexplay, and you'll love it ALL OVER AGAIN

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(though a review I thought I was supposed to have in the new Blender isn't there :( )

Haha, you are scum! Or not.

Anyway, DB and I mock your mocking. He acquired the "Oh Sheila" 12" in December and was happy as a clam!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How come no one raps like New Kingdom anymore? That's my question, Hip Hop Zealots! They were MAGNIFICENT!

http://www.towson.edu/~ryzhkov/gif-files/band5log.gif

Alex in NYC...not joking. (vassifer), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked them quite a lot as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ah New Kingdom...me and my friend went and saw them in the 7th Street Entry and they were cr8zy. There were only like 15 people there, and they had this big guy with dreads who danced around with a lightsaber. He walk around in the crowd and my friend got in a fake lightsaber battle with him.

I haven't pulled those records out lately, I wonder how they hold up.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Co-Pilot" and "Mexico or Bust" rock like the heaviest moments of Judas Priest. Bless'em.
