Hope noone objects to my pushing a show but a couple years ago I raved here about Ojos de Brujo, a flamenco hip hop group I had just seen perform at a world music conference. I walked in with no expectations and had my jaw drop as I was blown away by their show. I made everyone i know listen to their CD when i got back while saying 'but this is nothing like the live show which was spellbinging'

They're playing NYC on Sunday Feb. 15th and I believe Chicago on Saturday the 14th. If anyone in NYC can make it to the show I highly highly recommend it.

Bio and details below:

Ojos de Brujo the Barcelona-based Ojos de Brujo has caused a stir in
international music circles with its mesmerizing hip hop flamenco. The
group, whose name means "eyes of the wizard," creates musical magic with its irresistible sound that blends flamenco with hip-hop, funk, samba, reggae and other world musics. One of Spain's most popular live musical acts, the group is composed of musicians on flamenco guitar, bass, and percussion; a DJ, and a dancer, and features the compelling lead vocals of Marina Abad. Ojos de Brujo will receive a major award at the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award on March 9th, and can be heard on a great CD called "Bari", to be released on World Village May 11th.
GlobeSonic DJ's Fabian Alsultany, Derek Beres and Acidophilus will keep the party going after the concert with a potent mix of electroLatino grooves, Gypsy remixes, global hip-hop and more.

I don't know Spanish but I usually see "brujo" translated as "witch," which has a more potentially menacing connotation than "wizard," to me anyway, even if they mean roughly the same thing. "Wizard" makes me think of a Gandalf type figure. Anyone familiar enough with Spanish to comment? (H, do you know Spanish? I almost typed it Sapnish.)

don't know spanish but the translation i've usually seen for the name is 'eyes of the witch'

Brujo is wizard/ sorceror/ warlock. The "-o" ending makes the word masculine. Bruja is witch.

"Witch" is gender neutral among people who are at all serious about the witchcraft and the occult.

You may know Spanish, but you do not know the Dark Arts.

(I do enough to know about the o/a ending difference, thank you.)
