Just did a Juke Box Jury with Jon Langford via email and he compared the Streets to them, unfavorably. Any help?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

welsh, very funny 'hip-hop'

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hip-hop types from Newport, Wales, famous for wearing cheapo tracksuits and swearing an awful lot. Set to get rather popular this year, mates of the Super Furries and apparently the Darkness.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks a bunch!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 13 February 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Goldie Lookin' Chain are hilarious. Meant to be immense live but I keep missing them despite their playing gigs virtually on my doorstep all the time.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"Your Mother's Got a Penis" is ace.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Poppy (poppy), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Well anyone's better than The Streets, let's face it, that's just laughable garbage after all

(Their own site, loads of MP3s)

They ARE the UKs best hip hop act, no messing.

mei (mei), Saturday, 14 February 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
So is anyone going to see these GLC types tomorrow night at the Mean Fiddler? Damn right I'll be there.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I was the first person to write about them in print (I think). I compared them to the Beastie Boys, the Meatmen, The Streets and Aspects. I wonder if anyone would be impressed enough to have sex with me

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

saw them a couple of weeks ago. in amsterdam, so most of the audience didn't quite get 'the joke'. they were fun (and, unlike most other rappers in a live-setting, you could actually understand the lyrics) but they played after stazi and two cabaret-acts in a row is a bit much, even for me. musically they're not *that* spectacular - it made me think of collapsed lung - but with choruses such as 'p. diddy means shit to me, j.lo means shit to me, ja rule means shit to me' who cares?

(jg) ((jg)), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, no dissing of the 'Lung!

Nobody up for tomorrow then? Can sort list if necessary...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Are these actually going to be "big", then? I've not bothered to check them out yet, mainly because "It's The Darkness meets The Streets!" isn't an ideal pitch for me, to be honest.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

signed to warners - they are doing a fierce panda - 'credible indie single' thing with must destroy - personally? 'that joke isnt funny anymore'.

robotorch, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Given that they've spent two and a half years doing home-burned CDRs and then done two 'proper' releases on their own label, which they put in shops themselves, I don't think the notion of "credible indie" is exactly paramount here

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i should really know better than to bother explaining anything to you guys (seeing as half of you won't believe me anyway. its ok though, i probably got you all beat as far as cynicism goes, so i know where you're coming from).
but, for what its worth, our "deal" (a handshake between mates) with GLC was in place before they signed to a major.
the band came to us through some every long-standing mutual friends from Wales.

as Mencap said, their years of absolute DIY means they didn't need 'credibility' (hahahahahahahahaha... like doing a single with US of all labels could give them that), but they wanted to see what happened if they were to do a 'proper' single.
i guess that question was answered pretty quickly eh?

as for the 'coincidence' their deal with East West (who we do NOT have any kind of label-deal with, beyond our involvement with the Darkness), given that there's hardly any majors with any kind of budget for new signings at the moment it was always going to be one of a very small handful of a&r that eventually got them. the East West folks are nice guys (especially so, when compared to some other major label toads) so that's who they went with.

so there you go.

ian @ Must Destroy, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

something is going well. my office is full of non-music heads and they all were discussing the GLC this morning. lots of smiles and vibes ("no pants" was of particular note) .. guess i should find the stuff and make my own mind up, but bravo on getting them into the minds and hard drives of the masses. onwards ..

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

isnt must destroy the label that 'broke' the darkness? makes sense for a major to put something out on that label. to me anyways.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"makes sense for a major to put something out on that label. to me anyways."

.
yes Mr Robotorch, it would indeed make sense.
but only if said label was run by the kind of people who would do that kind of thing.
but Must Destroy isn't.
nobody 'puts something out' on Must Destroy except US.
i didn't spend all this time getting myself to the point where i can be my own boss, only to be told what do do by someone who gets paid by Bug Bunny!

we're a very open book here at Must Destroy. the office door is always open to those who don't believe that we're the scruffy record-collector jerks that we say we are.
feel free to come around and have a sniff at my credentials.

ian @ Must Destroy, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ho hum. don't really care just find it vaguely interesting. ironic hip hop and ironic rock coming off of the same label.

robotorch, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

We are not exactly talking "Touch and Go" here, are we...

Jason F, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was a nipper, I never gave a monkey's toss who released the records I liked. I was a huge Mary Chain fan, but it never even occurred to me that they were signed to a major label. Who cares? Well, apparently I do now - the last few years have made me by turns cynical and dismissive of major label practice, with or without good reason. Wish that hadn't happened though, bet I miss out on lots of good stuff as a result.

Either way, GLC tomorrow yay!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"We are not exactly talking "Touch and Go" here, are we..."

exactly.

which is why i feel the need to defend myself sometimes.
we're a stupid little indie label that releases what we like.
its one thing for people to think we release stupid records by stupid bands (i'll even swallow the 'ironic' thing from those who don't know better, even though its not the case) because the opinion of others isn't something that bothers me too much.

but when someone suggests that the stupid releases aren't even our idea!!
hell... i'm more than happy to take the blame for the dumb stuff we release, but i don't like the thought that folks think i'm a dickhead because i'm paid for it. i'm a dickhead, full time, for free!

but. what the hell eh?

i'm with Charlie on both counts ::

1) i never used to care when i was a kid. now i do, unfortunately.
i have no problem with artists on major labels, but i hate when they try and slip stuff under the radar. it insults my intelligence (hahahahahaha) and makes me immediately wary / dismissive.
(which is why i care so much when people assume same of my own label)

2) GLC tomorrow. yay.

ian @ zzzzzzzz, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Robotorch might be your chum Doomie, but I don't know how to check the IP or whatever. Either way he doesn't know what he's talking about

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

nah... i actually don't think it is Paul/Doomie.
i believe a 'ceasefire' was announced in that respect.
:-)

"Peace in our time"

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Boring, Boring, Boring. And tragic live too, their voices nearly all sound the same and they wander round the stage like some sort of ned rotisserie.

mzui, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

like some sort of ned rotisserie.

best. image. evah!

that's kinda precisely why i want to see 'em! http://www.chavscum.co.uk/index.html

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

saw them with super furry animals last week at hammersmith.

pretty poor. ok for 1 song. but for a whole set of the same shit!?
Cheap crap 80's beastie boys beats that all sound the sam. no DJ or any changes in the songs.

SFA were pretty fantastic though.

Mr Monket (apn99), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Make 'Soapbar' the next single! I love that tune.

Cheap beats? Well, duh. It's diy, they're probably made on very cheap equipment.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 15 April 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian/Charlie, I would really like to go to this tonight. Mail busted inbox-wise but will send you details plus phone.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No +1s, darl...sorry!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

suzy, is one ticket of no use to you at all?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone know if there is any truth to the rumor that they'll be doing a cover of Walk This Way with The Darkness?

mmmsalt (Graeme), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That is sadly true

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie, I just checked this because I thought you'd phone, one ticket would be fab, but do call me before 5 if you can.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

GLC are MUCH better than SFA, it's embarassing they had to open for them.

mei (mei), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

...I wonder if anyone would be impressed enough to have sex with me
-- DJ Mencap (lackofinteres...), April 14th, 2004.

Probably. D'you want me to show you where all the toothless shell suit girls hang out in the 'port?

mei (mei), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

eh? i wasnt on this thread. this is the second time? folks, so busy, i can't possibly be everywhere?

doomie x, Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, how's you? Besides the busy.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

GLC's manager Conal Dodds yesterday called the decision by Atlantic Records "short-sighted". He added: "Atlantic want to spend all the money marketing James Blunt. What do you do, spend the money on a band that's really challenging like Goldie Lookin Chain or spend it on Mr Soporific? It's a disappointment. Second albums never do as well the first."

ha ha! they're the lesser of two evils innit.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:16 (twenty years ago)
