Ever been shocked and appalled?

I used to think I could never be upset by lyrics etc or music, and I suppose in fairness I rarely am. However I've been meaning to ask do any of you find the reference in the 4th song on Jay Zs the Blueprint where he says "I got this afrikan chick........she like jigga man why you treat me like animal.......etc" offensive. I dont like the tone he uses and I just find it offensive in general. I guess I should be offended by the rest of the song aswell maybe to avoid a double standard. But er......I'm not. So anyone else feel the same?

That's like the nicest thing he says in the whole damn song - my personal offensive favorite is how he has to dump the Chinese chick cos she keeps bootlegging his shit.

Ally, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah no its ALL offensive but being an 18 year old white male I can laugh at that......rightly or wrongly. I just think that part isn't funny offensive, or stereotypically offensive, its just offensive. I'M GETTING OLD or something. I'll be writing letters to the newspapers next thing.........

I'm with Ally, I can't believe he got that line in! I'm wondering if this will affect sales in Asia or not, though. ;-)

I don't know. Isn't mocking Asians/Cubans/other ethnic groups kind of par for the course with rap albums? I thought so anyway.

Yup........I'm on my own on this one....... : )

That African segment is, as namechecked to in the song as well, a reference to an old Eddie Murphy stand-up bit, so I suppose that's his out, if he needs one.

Confusing Native American and Indian I would think to be the most potentially offensive bit, except it's too common, I guess. In the video, in that verse the woman is visualized as an Indian and except for "Chief Lots of Dough" all the N.A. references are dropped.

I own one Mentors album... whenever I want to be shocked and offended, I'll dust it off and give it a spin. El Duce and Blowfly ("Shittin' off a dock in the Bay") are still the masters of thoroughly repulsive verse.

Andy, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't listened to it a long time, so I don't really remember the details, but on Ghost Faced Killa's first album theres either a skit or a song where he describes basically raping some woman. I never listened to it again...

you're insane, wildflower is great.

ethan, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you might find what Robin had to say on similar ground interesting.

gareth, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh come on, the Chinese/bootlegging thing is hilarious and spot on. Who are you, Rupert Murdoch?

dave q, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not by music, no.

Kodanshi, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, for all you who haven't been to Canal Street in NYC - 95 year old Chinese women selling $4 Jay-Z CD's, $10 Prada/Louis Vuitton bags, $5 bottles of CK-One. It's great.

phil, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jay-Z's a self-proclaimed "thug" and all that, so why should it be a surprise that his raps are offensive? This ain't the Carpenters, for chrissakes....what do you expect?

I was shocked by that Nine Inch Nails "X Files" video thing that came out a few years ago... it's supposed to look like an amature snuff type movie, but I had to turn it off... it was too real, violent, and disturbing. And I'm a horror movie fan!

Sean, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was kind of appalled by some of the lyrics Malcolm McClaren made Anabella sing for Bow Wow Wow. Specifically, "I'm a horrible little idiot...I'm a rock 'n' roll puppet in a band called Bow Wow Wow". I mean, ha ha, it's funny and all, and she was probably in on the joke to some extent, but it just seemed a rather cruel thing to do to a 14 year old girl. Maybe I'm just a sap.

Arthur, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boy George and Annabella's mother thought so too, IIRC.

Anyone know of any recent interviews with Annabella Lwin? I'd love to see what she thinks now, as a grown woman, about how she was treated by McClaren and the rest of the industry. She had an amazing voice, and it's a shame that she's so obscure (or out of the industry) now.

I apoligize if she's dead or anything like that. I have no idea what happened to her after the mid-eighties.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

she had a coupla feeble comebacks: frankly i doubt she could have topped "hey jungle! hey jungle! go join your gang yeah! city all over go ape crazy!!" as it is one of the gratest rekkids evah made... (all the tings that ought to be wrong with it — inc.moral, er, waywardness, and tunes ripped off of black south african pop — actually end being *right* with it)

mark s, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I was just shocked by a song on the radio for the first time in months; the new nickleback is so all-around bad and worthless.

My God. Where to begin with how bad those lyrics are? Where I asks ya!?

Mind you some of AC/DC's are really bad in the same way and I quite like 'em. What's going on there? What I asks ya!?

hmmm, Monday, 26 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

When did David St. Hubbins start collaborating with Nickelback?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

[Thanks to nickelbackrocks@hotmail.com for these lyrics]

Genius.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

That Kroeger fuck's outdone himself there. I am so glad I've never heard that song. I didn't think he could top his likening of his relationship to a "Hollywood horror" (who's he dating? the Phantom of the Opera? the Blob? Carrie?) ...

Stop it. Too funny.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh Lordy...

Father's a name you haven't earned yet
You're just a child with a temper
Haven't you heard "Don't hit a lady"?
Kickin' your ass would be a pleasure
