looking back: Sympathetic Sounds Of Detroit

raw dog versions of stuff that was released on official studio verions of the individual bands. You got Black Girl by The Pay Backs which was better than the actual album version, Im Through with White Girls by The Dirtbombs is still one of the best things I have heard this decade, The Henchmen, Ko, and The Come On's were bunko, The Soledad's still rock ass, the VB's always sucked, the Cobras had two worlds class songs(shout bamalama, and Hey Sailor Hey...) The Diamond/Clone Defects track which was the most accessable thing on their first album and Whirlwind heat, the WS, and ther buzzards contributions were not the best.

So Detroit Garage Rock City is yesterday's hipster microtrend. What are your thought in hindsight?

This is what I am listening as I get ready for my date tonight.

Come to think of it, I did like Highclass by the Buzzards.

hope the date goes well!

I dunno I'd call it "yesterday's fad" so much as an ongoing thing that got picked up on (and is still being--Stripes more successful than ever = some kind of extra exposure still probably happening). maybe I'm wrong, though.

I liked it when Big Chief would cover "Funky Dollar Bill" live.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the exposure on Holly Golightly via the WS is wonderful.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 14 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Although she is of course not from Detroit.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 14 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit, according to AMG it turns out Big Chief actually did end up doing a studio version of "Funky Dollar Bill", on some Small Stone comp I never heard of. I wanna hear that.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 14 February 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Von Bondies were the best band in Detroit. Soledad's not from Detroit either BTW.

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Von Bondies are pretty good live & their first record's OK but they're not great on the not great compilation in question. I didn't really get the point of the whole thing - more raw & raggedy versions of songs already available in raw & raggedy form on other records... gee, thanks. I guess it's an OK overview if you were just curious but like almost all regional comps it doesn't feel very neccessary. And where is The Go? (not just on this record, but where the fuck are The Go in general?).

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

they just put out a new one called...."The Go"

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It ain't that good; unlike the last one the awful cornball lyrics overpower the Super Riff Action

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

good luck on the date!

hi

(that thread works best if you ignore the innumerable attempts to derail the thread with meaningless crit-babble)

So Detroit Garage Rock City is yesterday's hipster microtrend

Well Mike, it seems like you want both ownership of this scene and to dismiss it at the same time. Maybe pick one or the other? Just a suggestions.

And where is The Go?

At this very moment? Probably sharing a big fat bowl.

And the Von Bondies were the best band in Detroit. Soledad's not from Detroit either BTW.

The best band in Detroit from when this comp came out were the Sights, until they kicked out all the members, although they're still pretty good. Blew away the VBs every time.

And Soledad's moved to Detroit from Toledo a long time ago.

Best part about the CD is: "No suit from L.A. or New York is going to fly to Detroit to check out a band and hand out business cards." That and the irony of JW claiming what a big happy family the Detroit scene was while going out of his way to exclude certain bands.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. I'm leaving to see the Sights play tonight in ann arbor in about 20 minutes.
