Estimate how much money you've spent on music in your lifetime

CD's, cassettes, vinyl, concert tickets, t-shirts, pics, mags, other memorabilia, (and any other categories you think are relevant).
It's scary to think about it, I know.
My rough estimate:
CD's: $15K
cassettes + vinyl : $3K
concerts + tees: $3K
mags + other: $2K
I'm not including stereo equipment (would be maybe another $2K).

Total = $22K
Whew, that's less than the total of all my student loans!

€250

before 2001: about 30k cumulative

after 2001: roughly six dollars

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 14 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i shudder to think

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 14 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

$19.95 a month for high-speed internet service.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 14 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I DON'T. EVEN. WANT. TO THINK ABOUT IT.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 14 February 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure shoplifting saved me a few grand.

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 14 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

A "How much have you SAVED on music in your lifetime via downloading, home taping, shoplifting, review copies, etc.?" thread may be a neccessary follow-up.
Not too much for me, but I have a lot of live bootlegs and it's hard to assign a dollar value to them.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I DON'T. EVEN. WANT. TO THINK ABOUT IT.

What he said. (Happily, I have no debt to show for it -- admittedly, I don't have as much savings as I would like.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god. Considering how much I've made, too damn much.

dleone (dleone), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on people, confront those demons!
A much scarier thought is the total amount spent on alcohol. At least I have a closet full of music to show for the money spent, what do I have to show for all the beer, wine and liquor I poured down my throat?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

A seaful of stinking piss.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Fond sexual memories?

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(if videotaped)

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

No Ned, the piss was more watery and odourless than stinky. But thanks for asking!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 February 2004 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's how I rationalize it: if I hadn't spent it on music, I would have found a less worthy cause to spend it on. In other words, I'd have a huge stash of porn or an even bigger beer gut.

grapeshine (grapeshine), Saturday, 14 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess and Mike scarily OTM. I actually should quit. In my case, it's probably worse than a heroin habit.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 14 February 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on Ned, I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 14 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm secretly hoping yours is bigger!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 14 February 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy at the local recordshop once said: "Have you ever estimated how much money you spent on music????" He was also talking about himself. I replied:"Who cares? I am not going to think about it." Denial is the best way.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 14 February 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

A bit over $20,000... That's quite frightening.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 14 February 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it's quite ridiculous to drag out the calculator and then make the calculations. so if you hadn't spent x-amount of dollars, that'd mean you wouldn't have enjoyed the music.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 14 February 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

$20,000? wow

i'd say about £5000

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 14 February 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"A bit over $20,000... That's quite frightening."

That's not frightening at all, is it Ned?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 14 February 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say over $30,000 on CDs, another $6,000 on vinyl.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Saturday, 14 February 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe only £1500 on vinyl and cassettes and £3000 on CDs - whew

now what if you'd BOUGHT all the stuff you've downloaded??

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You losers have wasted so much money!

344, Saturday, 14 February 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not frightening at all, is it Ned?

*whistles idly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

At a wild guess, I'd say something like :

Records / CD's - £20,000
Concerts - £7000
Playing music (inc gear, rehearsals, recording, pressing records, touring, stolen vans etc) - £15,000

Total - £42,000

Money made back from reselling records - maybe £3000
Money made back from playing music - 50p

Some of this goes back far enough that inflation is an issue, so add on a few grand by today's prices.

However, I'd swap it all for the love of a good woman (actually I probably wouldn't, which is even more frightening than realising I've spent over £40,000 on it all).

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Just over £3000 I estimate, but that's in 6 years, most of them as a teenager.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god almighty what a fucking evil evil thread. @ £10 per CD that's £8,500. Most of my vinyl (only about 100 bits) I've 'acquired', so maybe £150 for the rest. Um, my PC cost me £550. My hi-fi cost me £1,600. My wee stereo cost me £250. Three minidisc walkmen over the years have cost me £550. My iPod cost £320. Gigs? Um... Dunno. £1,000? Not much, maybe only half that? All together that's... about £12,500? Which is my fucking salary. I'm 24. Oh dear. But I don't smoke!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It's fair to say I like a drink, though.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If we estimate £20 a week on drink since I was 18 (which is, um, conservative) then that's... Oh. A grand a year. Which makes £7,000 seeing as I'm 25 soon and, um, started drinking before I was 18.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Had I spent this £20,000 on summat else I'd be less fat, less unfit, less anti-social...

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

well over 100 grand, easily so if you include recording and instruments..

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 15 February 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i always think i spend too much until i read threads like these.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 15 February 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"well over 100 grand, easily so if you include recording and instruments.."

What currency's that 'though Jim? If that's Aus$ that's "only" about £40,000, right?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah or thereabouts. at a guess i've put nearly $20000 into the band alone.

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 15 February 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Udu Wudu is SO OTM... but only if that woman shared my passion for music.

So, let me see... 1500 CDs x €10 + 50 concerts x €22 + 4 guitars x €800 + 2 amplifiers x €550 + various effect pedals amounting to €700 + various percussion instruments amounting to €200 = around €21300.

Shiiiiiit.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i tried to work this out last year for insurance purposes. including musical equipment, i reckoned around £200 000. no wonder i'm still freaking renting!

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Upwards of 30 Million Mongolian Tugriks, easy.

christoff (christoff), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)
