Centro-Matic - C or D?

I sorta liked their Redo The Stacks CD back in college (used to play it on my radio show), and recently heard that CD of B sides, which was fairly rockin', but I can't get past how much it sounds like GBV / Archers of Loaf. I hear some of their stuff is more 'alt country' (which I assume means 'slower' and 'prettier') - what stuff is that? Am I wrong for thinking they may be a little too...err, reverent?

i was working at a small indie that wanted to sign centro-matic after redo the stacks...i used to love that album...

will johnson released so much stuff afterwards that i sort of stopped paying attention but its always nice hear that they get some deserved respect now and then.

i dont particularly care for archers/gbv/dinosaur jr. clones but redo the stacks was a favorite.

Find a CD called "The Static v. The Strings" - it dates from the same time as Redo the Stacks, but I like it better.

Search search search: "D Boon-Free (A Ninth Grade Crime)" and "Fuselage (It's Starting To Look Like Christmas)" off a local Xmas comp. I like them/him better when his vocals are kind of cracked rather than 'pretty.'

I have heard some of their stuff and my favorite is their latest Love You Just The Same. Having said that I was underwhelmed by their earlier stuff (matter of fact I just sold Distance And Clime)so that is kind of damning with faint praise. The singer's voice and nonsensical lyrics are my complaints with this group. They do have some nice rockin stuff though.

Well, in any case, I'm seeing them tomorrow night, since they're opening for The Mendoza Line...and I NEVER miss The Mendoza Line...

I'll report back.

Well, the show was pretty cool...

Centro-matic, despite recovering from food poisoning and apparent road fatigue, occasionally rocked. At times they were a bit plodding, but halfway through the set it really got very good. Will Johnson looks like somebody that'd get wrestled down by the LAPD on COPS.

They did one song that was really great, but I have no idea what it's called - the chorus was "Just like you do / just like you do..." anyone know it?

and The Mendoza Line were great, as always. Less wasted than usual but Timothy's voice was GONE. He still sang his heart out, though, bless his Westerberg-lovin' heart. What a great band.

My favorite Centro-matic tune is their take of Vermont's "Old Blue" and can be found on Opportunity [Split] they shared with same.

six years pass...

Their EP from this year, Eyas, is the best thing I've heard form them. Never been more than a casual fan at most, but this is great stuff.

three years pass...

New album came out this week—"Take Pride in Your Long Odds."

A few good tracks. Nothing revelatory, but a decent album, i think.
