LUSH "Scarlet" vs. "Scarlet"

I thought of this the other day when I brought out "Gala". The Cocteau or the non-Cocteau version??

I absolutely love both versions of this song. But if I had to pick one, I'd take the non-Cocteau version simply for that little one-note guitar thing that rings out in the chorus. I think the other one might be a little TOO pretty if that makes sense. I really can't think of any band that had two different versions of one song that were both this great though.

They are both tremendous.

But in truth, I cannot now remember the difference between them.

Non-Guthrie-ized version, absolutely, definitely. All those little swells and peaks are what make the song, and they're smoothed out on the Guthrie version. Man, you need that rhythm section. And Guthrie made Spooky sound sooo syrupy...it really turned me off (and this is coming from a huge Cocteau Twins fan).

guthrie took so much heat for spooky back then, blaming the producer is so 1991.

I wasn't a big Lush fan when I first heard them. I really didn't get into Spooky until years later and I still love the way it sounds. I mean I can understand some people's complaints - some of the guitar tones do leave a little to be desired - but the vocals on some of those tunes just sound so perfect.

OK, we are ready to pronounce.

Earlier today I played both versions; and naturally I confirmed what Steady M and I agreed last night - namely: yes both are marvels, but the more produced, highly wrought, ... lush version is the one; if there is a... one.
