boy, that dangermouse grey album really sucks terribly, doesn't it? the line he's riding is obviously "conservative grand puba beats are vastly superior to commercial beats. let me drop these behind jay-z's flow and maybe it will be as respectable as grand puba." or "hahhahahh the black album! the white album! get it, guys? guys! i spent so much time doing this, isn't it cool? come on!"

"obviously"

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 15 February 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

btw THE GREY ALBUM WTF?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 15 February 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

btw ascribing a set of motives to an artist and then trashing them for these motives cuz you can't/won't go after the sounds (the stuff you can hear)(which, guess what, doesn't include what dm was thinking)(even when he's 'thinking aloud' in rolling stone/the new yorker/pennysaver/whatever) is still auteurist bullshit, even if it's in attack mode.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 15 February 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

kno's the white albulum kills the grey album

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The initial "DO YOU SEE?" joke is pretty groansome but only until you actually play and enjoy the thing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i agree. it took me eons to even bother listening to the thing just because i was so put off by the concept (which at the time struck me as a handy way to differentiate from all the other black album remix projects) but a lot of these tracks are pretty hard to argue with, especially julia/dirt off your shoulder. i don't think dm had any grand motive to do it other than to see if he could.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yo cinneblunt
ascribing those "certain motives" is a device to convey the idea like "wow conservative production under jay-z is a terrible, terrible idea"

asfdzxc (asfdzxc), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

asfdzxc (asfdzxc), Monday, 16 February 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh how are those "conservative" beats?

is sampling now "conservative"?

djdee2005, Monday, 16 February 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

is this thread like that one Buffy where there's a robot buffy and the real buffy and they're fighting each other but no one's really sure who the real one is so no one stops the fight because they're not really sure who they're helping and then all of a sudden the robot Buffy's head explodes because it's all too much?

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 16 February 2004 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

And what exactly are "grand puba" beats?

djdee2005, Monday, 16 February 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's get back to this Trife as having Sarah Michelle Gellar's cleavage implication.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 February 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is a teetering stack of tepid crap.

Apparently BMI have issued a cease and desist order against DM.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess some people don't remember the days when hip-hop sampled rock ALL THE TIME...

bugged out, Monday, 16 February 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is a teetering stack of tepid crap.

How so? Can you like formulate an opinion around some sort of supportive ideas here, or are you just going to base it on declarative statements?

i guess some people don't remember the days when hip-hop sampled rock ALL THE TIME...

Or perhaps they see a difference between looping up an aerosmith guitar riff and actually chopping and splicing the samples from a single album into an entire high-concept album.

It was leant to me. I played it. I was unimpressed. In fact, I was so unimpressed that I decided very thoroughly that it's a teetering stack of tepid crap. The research required to render this decision was completed with the utmost attention to detail and an open mind.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude you have yet to give a reason that you disliked it other than "i was unimpressed."

Show don't tell. Didn't your teachers tell you that?

djdee2005, Monday, 16 February 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The usage of tracks from the White Album was tedious and, with few exceptions, not entirely inventive. The rapping --- well, suffice to say, I've never understood why Jay-Z entertains the success he does.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I will say this in its defense....I like the idea of this album, but the execution was undercooked. Also, I quite respect Danger Mouse's blithe disregard for the legal ramifications.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And what exactly are "grand puba" beats?

A reference to Brand Nubian, I'm guessing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

For me personally, well first I love Jay-Z so yeah I disagree on that.

But regarding the production, i EXPECTED it to be undercooked and was pleasantly surprised to find it was not. Rather than just looping up the obvious parts of the white album and having Jay rhyme over them, he actually was inventive and creative with the samples and took it to some "next level" type sample chopping.

A reference to Brand Nubian, I'm guessing.

Well obv, but I don't understand what the production on this album has to do w/ Brand Nubian.

djdee2005, Monday, 16 February 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, djdee, we'll have to respectfully disagree, then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The BBC reports!

cant get in .. been trying all night ! and modems etc .. will try from office tomorrow... susoect they have been ceased and desist or whatever the lawyers have been saying ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If I didn't have to give the copy I have back to the gent who nicely leant it to me,....I'd sell it to someone who hates it more than me and then watch him snap it in half.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

hey djdee, i like the album... i just find it bizarre how seem people around here are sort of politically offended by it... it's a bit of fun, that to my mind works far better than could reasonably be expected. I do wish they cut stuff up a bit less and let some of the grooves flow a bit more, but there's some really inventive stuff on here that makes me appreciate Jay-Z's raps more (I liked the original Black Album too)

bugged out, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked it, but it doesn't age very well.

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's pretty fab but recorded like shit and normally that doesn't bother me
