shitty scheduling: why cant promoters get it right?

so, last night was valentines night, and michael mayer was playing barcelona. on the same night, sutekh was playing somewhere else.
this would have been a headache on any night.- but on valentines night? why the fuck would my girlfriend want to listen to tech house on 14th feb? (yes i know there are lots of couples that would happily go to this sort of thing on valentines day but...not us, right?). assuming that like, 1/3 of people are in a couple or something and want to do something, come the 14th.

my question is, why would promoters in barcelona think, hang on, "there's like this totally famous dj, michael mayer playing, lets put sutekh on on the same night, because the sort of people that want to see m. mayer are exactly the sort of people that want to see sutekh, so we could halve our audience this way!"

this is no "joined up thinking". and i havbe been the victim of it too many times. the fact that i couldnt go to either was even moire irritatiing.

so why do promoters not appear to bother checking this sort of thing out?

Because via competition they can then try and persuade more people to attend their show in particular, thus earning them money, of which promoters are fond.

yes but in a city with a finite number of people into one style of music eg less than the capacity of the club, then any competition is going to harm both sides.

Maybe it's something in the water.

Wouldn't it also depend on the schedule of the artist? Maybe both could only play on those particular nights?

blonde redhead, icarus line and melissa auf de maur all play monday night in london, but i am already committed to seeing explosions in the sky / part chimp (both of whom will blow me away, i'm sure, buuuuut...)

That's a good thing, too. 'auf der maur' (nice name, geek) is as much a joke as that other bassist from that awful 'perfect cirle' band. The one who quit who has an even more annoying name.

So is your own name John Johns or what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it's 'Ned Raggett.' The kids at school used to kick my ass on account of the surname rhyming with a less than desirable, derogatory classification.

JesusMaryChain, Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Because single people go out on Feb 14th too?

Mm, clarity.

ok forget the valentines thing, but this happened to me too many times. in a samll city (eg sheffield), where the number of people who are into like one sort of scene is pretty small, and yet the scheduling is set up so that an already small number is divided, meaning everyone loses out. i mean, i know the artists schedule must be the main factor, but i would have thought it wouldnt have been worth the bother for either party to do it in the first place. this isnt big business we are talking about here! i mean, competition is *not* beneficial as far as i can see!

Ambrose, where do you live?
In big cities with healthy club scenes these sorts of conflicts happen quite often.

one month passes...
hahaha another saturday, another problem: vilalobos vs geoff white from force inc. theyu are playing in cluybs that are 10 mins walk from each other.
