I've exhausted every Fountains of Wayne track that exists - should I finally check out Ivy? C or D?

I remember a single from quite a few years ago that i liked a lot, but after that, I stopped paying attention.

This year I've gotten heavier into Fountains of Wayne than ever before (always liked 'em, but that last album really did it for me) and, having heard almost every B side, album track, and several live shows, I need a Schlesinger fix - how does his songwriting rate in Ivy as compared to Fountians of Wayne?

also - am I confused, or did a member of Elk City play in this band as well?

You should listen to Sloan now.

Hmmm...Sloan is a band that I've avoided for some time. They always seemed so...bland.

the Ivy tunes are just as good as those on FoW releases but they reflect a completely different set of references. they've also got fey frenchified female vocals which i like but you might hate. "apartment life" is easily their most consistent release and has their best songs.

"fey frenchified female vocals..." - Have you heard my band, Phil? :)

Cool, thanks for the tip, I'll check it out...

I liked "The Best Thing" - that was fantastic. Never listened to any more - sort of kept it aside for a rainy day when there was nothing else around to get into. What would be a good starting point?

(I love FoW, obviously)

ooooooooh apartment life is luverly

Lots of mp3s at the Ivy website (http://www.thebandivy.com/).

Have you heard my band, Phil?

no. should i? if so then point me in some mp3 direction.

phil turnbull (philT), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the first Ivy album, 'Reality', best. It has aged a lot better than the trip-hop-lite of 'Apartment Life', although the songwriting might be less distinctive. Their cover album ('Guestroom'?) was a pleasant surprise, too. (I'm not a big FoW fan.)

Yes! Including a cover of Steely Dan's "Only a Fool Would Say That."

Ivy is way superior to FoW.

Elk City are also ace. "freeze two over eight" is one of my fave indie singles ever.

If you can find the Gay Potatos set that's floating around the internet, grab that as well. Lot's of Collingwood.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 16 February 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

going back up towards the top..

Done with F.o.W?
Do Sloan.

oh yes.

ian johno (ian johno), Monday, 16 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ivy is as dull as f.o.w so you'd probably love them. whatever happened to the ivy that was on sarah? that was confusing for a bit, having two bands named ivy, both making wimpy pop songs.
all three are better than sloan.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 16 February 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stand Schlesinger, in general, but that Ivy covers album is fantastic. How can I hate someone who covers Nick Heyward?

dlp9001, Monday, 16 February 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim, what it the Elk City connection?

Curt (cgould), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know if there is a connection but i love them anyway

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ivy (UK) became Doolittle who as far as i know only released a split single on Noisebox before disappearing. if the members have gone on to do anything it probably came out on Sickroom.

"the trip-hop-lite of 'Apartment Life'

You must have a different version to the one I do. Trip hop? The last album had that 'Undertow' song that was vaguely in that area but apart from that...

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

the trip-hop-lite album was Long Distance. Apartment Life is guitars guitars guitars.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Matos, I might be lumping them together some in my memory, but didn't even the hit from 'Apt. Life', "The Best Thing", feature a breakbeat-y rhythm track?

Curt (cgould), Monday, 16 February 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Apartment Life is def. better than the last two FoW albums, but Fountains of Wayne is way better than anyhting else Collingwood or Schlessinger related.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 16 February 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

See, and I think Welcome Interstate Managers is just as good as s/t.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

So am I the only person who rates "Utopia Parkway" above S/T and WIM?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not that I don't like Utopia Parkway, it's just that there is no "Barbara H" or "Hackensack" on it - and there's the dredful "Hat and Feet" to contend with...but the title track rules, for sure...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
Dom, Utopia Parkway is perfection.
