KMD--Best Of

I got the Best of KMD CD--anybody heard it? I had only heard a little KMD before, and I would have to describe this CD as "Fly", possibly super-fly.

Anybody heard it? Thoughts on KMD? It has a classic early 90s feel to it, but with rhymes that are way beyond your average early 90s hip hop act. I don't own Black Bastards, so I can't really compare...

I don't know if this has been covered, because I think "kmd" is too short for a search...

Track listing? I saw this in the neighborhood store the other day but no track listing was provided on the back of the CD. :(

Why don't just re-release the goddamn "Mr. Hood" already??

Sad to say, if your only two albums are "Mr. Hood" and "Black Bastards" (the latter of which is practicaly a completely different group altogether, for all intents, purposes, and history), then what's the F'ing point of a "Best of"?

http://www.undergroundhiphop.com/store/detail.asp?UPC=NSD103LP

yeah, there is no track listing inside the cd either, and when you put it in your computer, it lists all the tracks as untitled. Irritating.

1. Mr. Hood At Piocalles Jewelry/ Crackpot -
2. Who Me -
3. Trial N Error -
4. Hard Wit No Hoe -
5. Mr. Hood Gets A Haircut -
6. 808 Man -
7. Humrush -
8. Peachfuzz Listen
9. Preacher Porkchop -
10. Garbage Day -
11. What A Nigga Know? Listen
12. Sweet Premium Wine Listen
13. Smokin That Shit Listen
14. Contact Blitz Listen
15. Black Bastards Listen
16. Sounded Like A Roc -
17. Plumskinz -
18. Popcorn Listen
19. Nitty Gritty (Remix)

yeah just buy both albums. they're both worth hearing in their entirety.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, there is no track listing inside the cd either

????

This HAS to be a self-bootleg of sorts.. but it's the most mind-bogglingly stupid self-bootleg. Why not just release a self-bootleg of "Mr. Hood" then, since "Black Bastards" is still in print? This makes no sense at all.

Oops: that would be the best advice if "Mr. Hood" was still in print.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It isn't? I know I've seen it around, though it's been a few years since I have.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing (and I stress "guessing") KMD can't afford the re-licensing of the samples on "Mr. Hood", as it was part of the grand last gasp of hip hop records in 1991 that didn't suffer the post Biz Markie/Gilbert O' Sullivan lawsuit apocalpyse.

"Mr. Hood" has been re-released on vinyl as a bootleg, but it's a poor sounding bootleg with very low output. (I have it anyway). Possibly, you saw that, or a similar CD boot.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, inside the CD it says:

"Coming soon...the 3rd nstamllment in the KMD saga: MENTAL ILLNESS"

they left off the i, not me.

Well, I don't have these other albums, but this CD is GREAT.

"Coming soon...the 3rd nstamllment in the KMD saga: MENTAL ILLNESS"

I'll say..

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

so, since they only really have two albums, let's do a take sides: Mr Hood vs Black Bastards.

i absolutely adore Mr Hood. I owned it on tape in highschool and nearly jumped for joy when last year finally found a used copy on cd. I don't really love Black Bastards, thinking it's a little too fast or something? My wife, hearing neither until recently loves Black Bastard way more.

JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I love black bastards more. But its close, they're both great.
I found a copy of Mr. Hood on CD used for 6.99 at a Sam Goody in the middle of rural Ohio. Unelieavably awesome.

Black Bastards sounds crappy because the masters were stolen or lost I believe...they had to take the music from these old tapes to release the album. "Sweet Premium Wine," "What a Nigga Know (Remix)" feat. MF Grimm, the original mix, etc...great album.

djdee2005, Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it's too bad about the murkiness of "Black Bastards", as it could have changed my opinion of the record. But given the actual history between the two albums (i.e. the death of DJ Sub-Roc in a car accident, and Zevlove going insane after that, understandeably), K.M.D. should have really changed their name for "Black Bastards", as comparing the two albums is like comparing an apple to an orange.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 15 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

This Best Of was pretty weak - they just took half of each of their two albums, and added one unreleased track.

Mr. Hood has been issued on CD before (just three years ago I think) - you can find it online.

I like the murky sound on Black Bastards - I think it was deliberate, and it's not the only Zev Luv/MF Doom-related project that sounds like shit (King Geedorah's not as extreme, but it's sort of lo fi).

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, now I am beginning to feel like I got ripped off. Oh well, I still love what's on this CD.

Scott, Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's still a great set of music - and Mr. Hood isn't on CD anymore, so I was glad to get as many CD-quality tracks from it as possible. I guess it's just a funny release because they had so little music to begin with, and I like almost all of it!

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Sunday, 15 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know...Madvillain is being released soon. Madlib producing Doom of KMD fame. Cool.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i kinda wish they woulda switched off production/ vocal duties like on the Jaylib record. I dig MF's vocals, but I LOVE his beats.

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 16 February 2004 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaylib = Jay Dee and Madlib.

djdee2005, Monday, 16 February 2004 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaylib = Jay Dee and Madlib.

is this up for the obvious awards?

i was comparing the jaylib w/the madvillian albums and saying how i'm bummed that only madlib is making the beats on the latter.

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 16 February 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fourteen years pass...

I lulled our Mr Hood this week and am reminded of its Classic status. The conversation with Bert at the end of “Who Me?” - so great.
