ESG: c/d?

Classic, of course!

I just picked up the "ESG: A South Bronx Story" double-vinyl collection and I'm in bliss. Anyone who likes everything from "Second Edition" PiL to hip-hop to northern soul to Swell Maps should get this.

The only tracks here that aren't extra-essential is Side Four, the '91 era stuff. But even "Get Funky" is neato.

Why couldn't I have been a hip 8-year-old and see Public Image Limited and ESG play live in Santa Monica back in 1980? GRRRRRRRRR!

They're classic, though I only have the debut EP (reissued on vinyl in '98!). Am I missing some good stuff?

"A South Bronx Story" isn't a complete discography by any means, but it does sample more from the worthwhile releases. Half of the first EP, most of the "Come Away" record from 1983, and a little from the s/t one from 1991.

Unless you want to save your money to track down the originals and be more complete, "A South Bronx Story" is quite a great comp to have in the meantime.

("Come Away" should easily please folks who like the first EP. The s/t from 1991 is a little more spotty. "Get Funky" is the only track I dig that's represented on this comp, though.)

I'd have something to add if I weren't tired and didn't completely agree with Brian.

ESG = classic of course, but I've got a question for any of y'all: I was out dancing this morning and I heard an absolutely amazing house remix of "Moody", really dubby and layered, like Monolake collaborating with Masters Of Work (of course, its brilliance may be the result of other chemical factors). Anyone know what this might be?

You're all right - classic. I believe it was Tim H who put me onto South Bronx Story as an essential purchase. And he was right too!

it might have been the cover of Moody by Sessomato (Dave Lee, a.k.a. Joey Negro etc)

if the Minutemen were black girls from the Bronx playing dance music it might sound like ESG! so sneery and pouty and so earnestly funky. were they the last of the GRATE dance bands??

"were they the last of the GRATE dance bands??"

i'd say yes, with empahsis (majorly) on the BAND part. (although, as always, someone prove me wrong. and note: producers, djs and related hangers on do NOT count.)

You folks are taking me back...ESG, Liquid Liquid. Ack!! Tommy Boy has a good Comp Series a few years back called The Perfect Beats. Those two bands were on Vol. 2.
