Monster Magnet 'Monolithic Baby' : Verdict?

So after it was made clear here recently that a lot of people still have time for the 'Magnet, who's heard the new CD? I picked up the CD/DVD package today and have listened to it once. Harder and more riff-based than the last album, definitely, with some strong tunes. It always takes a few listens with their stuff anyway. But it does feel a bit strange to listen to an album by Monster Magnet where Wyndorf is now the only original member...

Strange indeed -- so this is the follow-up to God Says No, there's been nothing in the time since? Haven't heard this new one but I'd certainly give it a chance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss John McBain. I haven't heard the new one but I see them sorta like Metallica - I just shake my head and think about what used to be every time they put a new one out now...

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

We all miss McBain, but there are three (four if you include '25 - Tab', or is he on that one??) excellent and very different albums that came after that where MM grew and developed further. Plus if he hadn't left, we would not have the amazing Wellwater Conspiracy albums (which certainly have more depth than MM) and Desert Sessions 1&2. Hey, McBain should join Queens of the Stone Age! Quick, someone tell Josh!

When's this coming out? The boys at the record store they haven't heard a word about it.

otto, Monday, 16 February 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are you? It came out in the UK today, but they don't appear to have a record deal in the US right now (!). Website mentions Sanctuary as a possibility for March.

radio morocco (radio morocco), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

McBain IS "Tab 25"!!!!

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to take away from Wyndorf on that one - all those crazy voices he puts in there - but the guitars actually sound like they're dripping out of the speakers.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i need to hear wellwater conspiracy.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone remember Hater?? Hater put out one album around '94 and then re-formed about 4 years later as Wellwater Consriracy. I was so excited about Hater when I heard about the lineup but I was a bit let-down. I never really gave Wellwater much of a chance because of how disappointed I was with Hater. Its all good stuff and all but that mile-deep McBain sound was gone.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

There's new Monster Magnet?!?!

ben welsh (benwelsh), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not feeling this new album. At all. These "strong tunes", where are they?

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

hater¿ wasn't matt from soundgarden and that weird-ass basest of theirs in that group¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

if that's the group i'm thinking of i had no idea they'd reformed. hater had their moments + showed some promise but needed more work. or practice or something. imho.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My copy should arrive this week--the two songs I heard were pretty good, "Slut Machine" and "Hotel Baby."

The word is that they're going to sign with Sanctuary in the US.

Tab25, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a hard time handling the fact that there's a new Monster Magnet album available in the UK and not in the US. That's nothing against the UK, but more a sign of how sad we are over here.

otto, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

slut machine¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm biased (look at my handle after all), but I've been listening to it and my verdict is that it's terrific, especially "Slut Machine," "Ultimate Everything," and "There's No Way Out of Here." I hope Magnet will be able to get more respect in the US than they've gotten in the last few years. Praise be to the Bullgod.

Tab25, Friday, 20 February 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

*rubs eyes*
you.... you mean to say monster magnet aren't widely respected in the u.s.¡

well, slut machine will surely rectify this.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 20 February 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, go wank to your Spoon records.

Tab25, Friday, 20 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that's exciting--I didn't like GLU so much but Powertrip is a big fave around chez Matos.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 20 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
people! listen to this album!

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 29 July 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit!

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 29 July 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Attempted to boycott this until a new American tour, but the hell with it. They've never released an album that didn't plaster me on the first few listens. This one seems to stick around a little more than God Says No, but it's no Spine of God. "Ultimate Everything" has been the anthem of the summer.

Still waiting to hear from anyone who's attended one of those European free-form acid-jam no-vocals shows they're doing. What's the story?
