Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 2 October 2004 08:20 (twenty years ago)

i should really be embarassed that I didn't remember till now the connotation of the word but I'm too busy laughing about the fact that they call themselves suicide girls. Gracias, Dom.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 2 October 2004 08:30 (twenty years ago)

But as someone noted on another thread, these ads make it embarrassing to load the page at work (and distract from the other content).

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 2 October 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I give Pitchfork advertising Suicide Girls 0.0.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 2 October 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Did I miss something? Suicide Girls extensively advertised on Pitchfork last year. Nobody batted an eyelash.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 2 October 2004 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Somehow I never noticed before a week or two ago...weird.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 2 October 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Beyond the obvious appeal of seeing cute goth/punk/indie women in the buff, what's the big deal about Suicide Girls? Has anyone here actually signed up?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Beyond the obvious appeal of seeing cute goth/punk/indie women in the buff, what's the big deal about Suicide Girls?

Hahaha. Beyond the obvious appeal of nudity, what's the big deal about porn?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 2 October 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, those ads have been up for maybe 2 years? I think that's the only reason I've even heard of Suicide Girls.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 2 October 2004 15:53 (twenty years ago)

the ads are bigger and more prevalent now

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:04 (twenty years ago)

No, I'm dead serious, because the site (the few times I've checked it out) seems to tout itself as some sort of new-school approach to porn, i.e. "You can get to know these girls, like, for real, and stuff! No exploitation here, nosirrreebob!!!" Which I can see the appeal of, but the whole thing just seems like Hugh's Bunnies with streaks, piercings, and webcams. So I'm asking if anyone here has actually been a fully-paid up member, and if the site is what it purports to be, or if it's just Livejournal with boobies.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I nearly got sued by them....

ITS TOO BAD THAT WE ARE FORCED TO READ PITCHFORK

THIS IS TRULY THE SADDEST DAY OF OUR LIVES

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:39 (twenty years ago)

No, the site isn't worth it. And yes, the site has the same amount of exploitation as more mundane alternatives. The guy who runs it is a nutjob.

Xii (Xii), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

ITS TOO BAD THAT WE ARE FORCED TO READ PITCHFORK

Yes, I still have nightmares about that horrible night I was forcibly taken from my home by the Pitchfork ediorial staff and made to read, aloud, random selections from the We Are The World section in a bizarre recreation of the "screening room" scene from
A Clockwork Orange.

Dr. Stanpole says I'm making remarkable progress.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Suspicions confirmed. Thank you!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

I don't think anything terribly negative has been implied. The thread seems more about the cultural connection between pitchfork, its readers, and the pandering to its most pathetic demographic. That being the readers of pitchfork who are attracted to goth girls, but cannot get laid, and thus have to masturbate to internet porn, and are attracted to porn that simulates getting to know girls, rather than, say, the other recent form of gonzo pornography, in which girls are treated as objectively as possible, like science. Of course, girls like suicide girls better, but I bet its some cool fucking dude like Hugh Heff writing all those profiles and interest lists and blog posts. It only would be sensible in terms of cost/doability.

Tim Double, Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago)

I was always a big advocate of goth porn before I was aware that it existed.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Exactly. Option A serves as some sort of relationship substitute: make a connection, however, tenuous, with this cute girl. Option B is basically vengeful: this cute girl (*SUBTEXT: that you could never, in real life, have a shot with in a million years*) is dumb enough to be here, so we're going to abuse her in ways you can only imagine. Take that, cute girl!

Of course, girls like suicide girls better, but I bet its some cool fucking dude like Hugh Heff writing all those profiles and interest lists and blog posts. It only would be sensible in terms of cost/doability.

That's pretty much what I thought when I first browsed that site.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't buy that last part. I'd imagine that one of the big selling points for girls who get featured on the site is that they get to post little blog entries and talk about their interests.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Part A seems a bit over-stated too. So Pornography is the sole preserve of people who can't get proper girlfriends, is it?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Well, apart from this:

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

The Suicide Girls did a show here in Vancouver, Canada. It was the typical burlesque style semi-stripping (ie. no nipples even). This type of show has been popular for years here, but this was one of the worst examples. The women reek of low self-esteem issues for one thing. Which isn't sexy at all. I can't really erase the feeling that they were using the stage as therapy.

everything, Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I want to hear more about JW getting almost-sued by the pornographers.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I can picture a sweatshop of three to five vaguely cool dudes degenerating, and one cool guy, a photographer by trade, but who's dream was always to operate a burlesque, running shit, stopping in occasionally to check on them while they pose on that website as hip slutty girls.

peter $.., Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

JW? what's this? noize pr0n?

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Somebody was putting up Suicide Girls stickers on the bus stops down my street earlier this year. This is Hull. I was pretty wtf-ed when I saw them.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Some good points being made here:

Part A seems a bit over-stated too. So Pornography is the sole preserve of people who can't get proper girlfriends, is it?

Not necessarily, no, but there will always be a certain type of chronically lonely individual who is afraid of real-life women. Moreoever, I've met people (both male & female) who, deep down, prefer electronic relationships to flesh-and-blood ones, so I can see why something like Suicide Girls would be so popular.

I don't buy that last part. I'd imagine that one of the big selling points for girls who get featured on the site is that they get to post little blog entries and talk about their interests.

I'm actually undecided as to whether the girls are actually who they present themselves as, or if there's a staff whose job it is to write this stuff. The latter is more of a cynical, knee-jerk thought.

I dunno, anyone here met a Suicide Girl in the flesh?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:42 (twenty years ago)

It was the typical burlesque style semi-stripping (ie. no nipples even).

I'm baffled by the sudden popularity of the ironic burlesque show. It seems like a cop-out, the sort of thing that attracts hipster guys who are afraid to blow their indie cred by being seen at (or, more likely, being scene coming out of), an honest-to-God strip joint.

That's not a shot at you, everything, I just don't get the phenomenon.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like a similar thing to the rise of the "Lad's Mag" in the UK over the last few years, Tantrum. A few topless pictures and lots of shallow style articles so chumps can pretend they're not buying porn.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 2 October 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Their have been burlesque shows here which have been really entertaining. Good bands, comedians, dancing etc, punctuated with the dancers. The Suicide Girls had The Gossip open for them for instance. Honestly, the best of them are really creative, talented and sexy. Some of them don't really strip much at all, but can be much sexier than the full on strip shows. There is usually a mixed sex crowd.

As to not having the balls to go to a real strip joint, I don't think that's really an issue in this city. EVERYONE here goes to strip joints all the time. THe beer is cheap, some other bars aren't open for lunchtime. Plus there are not that many pubs in this city anyway, so sometimes there are two strip joints closer than the nearest pub. Local bands here play the strip joints from time to time since they usually have great stages and atmosphere.

That said, the burlesque format is pretty stale now.

Wow, what a bunch of judgemental prudes.

Exploitation? Give me a break. No one's making them do it. In fact, they're lining up to do it. Am I supposed to feel bad because the women supposedly have low self esteem? Shit, join the fucking club.

This thread reminds me of college where a guy shows his sensitive side, talks his feminist-man rap...right before offering girl in question a sensitive man non sexual back rub.

shookout (shookout), Saturday, 2 October 2004 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah! If anyone's being exploited, it's the chump who fuels that site! The girls aren't being exploited whatsoever, for profit, or otherwise. Yeah! No porn exploits women, not even that hard gonzo stuff. They want to be in those movies, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it!! Yeah!!!

Tim Twice, Saturday, 2 October 2004 18:37 (twenty years ago)

It's very unhealthy for women to be comfortable with their sexuality. Men need to protect them from careers in pornography.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 2 October 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Wow, what a bunch of judgemental prudes.

Since when does trying to have a semi-serious discussion about porn equal prudery?

Exploitation? Give me a break. No one's making them do it. In fact, they're lining up to do it. Am I supposed to feel bad because the women supposedly have low self esteem? Shit, join the fucking club.

Sigh. Go back upthread and read my original question. I was asking what made the Suicide Girls different from other porn sites, because it seems to position itself as being less exploitative than other porn sites. For the record, I like me some porn just fine (so does my girlfriend, for that matter), and I've seen the inside of more than one strip joint. To me liking porn is kind of like masturbation - nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to particularly proud of either (copyright Matt Groening). (Coincidence? I think not.)

This thread reminds me of college where a guy shows his sensitive side, talks his feminist-man rap...right before offering girl in question a sensitive man non sexual back rub.

Guys who pull that sort of shit need a lapdance.. followed by a kick in the balls.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Porn? Suicide girls? They don't even belong in the same sentence.

Porn? Suicide girls? They don't even belong in the same sentence.

No, you're clearly supposed to enjoy the photos for their artistic merit. Really.

Read my posts again. Nowhere did I say I didn't enjoy nudity. In fact I said EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. Furthermore, I've been to the Suicide Girls website for the EXRESS PURPOSE OF CHECKING OUT SAID GIRLS. I was wondering aloud as to whether the site was worth the paid subscription.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I'd say nah, the free samples are good enough.

shookout (shookout), Saturday, 2 October 2004 20:49 (twenty years ago)

By the way, Tantrum, I wasn't objecting to anything you said, it was more about he post earlier that referred to the Suicide Girls as being exploited, which is a laughable notion.

shookout (shookout), Saturday, 2 October 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Not any longer relevent, but it is indeed my understanding that the girls are indeed the primary contributers to their own blogs and indeed SG pays the girls to continue contributing. That is, they get a flat fee for a photo set and then some sort of per-month payment for being active on the site.

mikef (mfleming), Saturday, 2 October 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, anyone here met a Suicide Girl in the flesh?

-- Tantrum The Cat (tantrumtheca...), October 2nd, 2004.

yes, i know one of them. (although i knew her before she got onto that site) we're not really friends anymore, though - i criticized a piece that she wrote about my band and she apparently took offense to that and won't talk to me anymore. whatever, it was really piss-poor & inaccurate writing. i'm pretty sure that mikef is OTM, as they say in ilx-ville.

6335, Saturday, 2 October 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago)

By the way, Tantrum, I wasn't objecting to anything you said, it was more about he post earlier that referred to the Suicide Girls as being exploited, which is a laughable notion.

Ah, OK. No harm done.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 2 October 2004 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I turned off all the ads on Pitchfork using the Adblock extension thingy for Firefox 'cause I was sick of looking at all of them and because I'm mean.

But now I regret that I apparently I'm the chance to go "Whoa, dude. Hip naked chicks."

But really, you think you'd see more of this. There have to be throngs of niche nekkid chick genres waiting to be exploited. [fill in your music genre and attaire] naked chicks, geeky naked chicks, boring naked chicks, funny naked chicks, sports naked chicks, literature loving naked chicks, outdoorsy naked chicks, etc., etc., etc. I mean for every interest you could have a pr0n site. There my friends lie an internet cash cow. Then again it may all be happening right now and I'm missing it all 'cause I'm not looking at the ads. Fooey!

Mike Salmo (salmo), Saturday, 2 October 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

> I dunno, anyone here met a Suicide Girl in the flesh?

I heard the above from a girl who said she tried out and wasn't accepted. She had a long, humorous rant about not getting accepted, actually.

mikef (mfleming), Saturday, 2 October 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i know a girl who tried out, but the pictures she sent were too edgy or something.

she is pretty gothish i do admit.

Haha yes. Tut-tutting about the sex industry is quite prudish and also possibly a little dishonest.

A friend of mine even found a chicks-who-wear-headphones site. He was thrilled.
