And before all pop music milktoasts dismiss SLTS with a "dance music is a unifying force", who else but Nirvana has gotten metalheads to headbang to a Pixies tribute!!!!

THAT IS WHY GRUNGE RULES!!!! FACEMELTING GUITAR NOIZE = UNIFIES INDIE FUQZ AND METALHEADS!!!!

Also, do real metalheads like The Darkness?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, do real metalheads like The Darkness?

NO!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I choose "Lithium"

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey Ya." Better lyrics, better beat. No "grunge" movement to blame on these guys yet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i choose wheelz of steel and touch ne i'm sick

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I THINK THAT "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" IS ABOUT "HEY YA!"

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey Ya" is surprisingly good for a hip-hop tune
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is surprisingly good for a metal (because grunge is metal, just face it!) tune.

I guess I'll go for the latter, but both are great.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i choose to abstain

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

However, there is a movement of drunk frat asshats thinking they're really cool

yeah but that's the case with both groups so it cancels out.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Funky white kids vs. Angsty white kids FITE!!!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey Ya" is not funky.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, do real metalheads like The Darkness?

Real metalheads want the Darkness disembowled with all stealth!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Did real metalheads like Van Halen?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst DJ I've ever seen once mixed "Come As You Are" into "Hey Ya". Smooth.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Some may argue that SLTS's genius lies in its stupidity -- ehh. Hey Ya's genius lies in its genius. Song about nothing in too earnest a style for a song about nothing/song about something. Point Outkast.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Did real metalheads like Van Halen?

of course they did.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you equating the Darkness with Van Halen? If so, you are fit to be flayed alive.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

A better question would be did real metalheads like Spinal Tap.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I THINK THAT "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" IS ABOUT "HEY YA!"

Holy shit, that may be the most brilliant thing ever said on ILM.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

hee jody beat me to it

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

A better question would be did real metalheads like Spinal Tap.

of course they did. (all in good fun and all that)

The Darkness just blow.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

A better question would be did real metalheads like Spinal Tap.

I know that Kiss didn't find it funny in the slightest. But I think a lot of metalheads resepected it (as it was done lovingly) and even went so far as to actual like "the band" itself (I know I bought the album, and put "Hell Hole" back to back on mixtapes next to Accept, Iron Maiden and Helix). I think what sets Spinal Tap apart from The Darkness is that THEY COVERED IT FIRST, and DID IT BETTER!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a damn shame about the Darkness, because their name would be a great band name without the "the", and even then, the name is wasted on a piss-poor metal joke.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

everytime i come to work people aske me what i am listening to and when i say kanye west they say "whats that" and i say he is an mc/producer and they say "oh that hiphop stuff" and i say "yes" and they say "is it anything like outkast? i like them". i vote for primus.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Any Metalhead who doesn't at least appreciate the Darkness is not a real Metalhead.

scottontharox (scottkundla), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Primus was fucking great live

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think what sets Spinal Tap apart from The Darkness is that THEY COVERED IT FIRST, and DID IT BETTER!

While I totally, totally, agree as far as the humor goes, I'd actually argue that the hooks on some Darkness songs would work fine if the singer didn't try so hard to make his ludicrousness so OBVIOUS. Like if he didn't reach for notes he can't actually hit. They'd be the best Heart songs in ages, you know?

And did metalheads dig Heart, btw?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

female ones did

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Any Metalhead who doesn't at least appreciate the Darkness is not a real Metalhead.

I do not appreciate but I acknowledge.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yes primus was. i saw them once. i had fun. i think they are touring again, and herb is back isnt he?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Darkness are funny sometimes but I'm still not convinced they're joking about what they're doing. I don't mean that they take it totally seriously, just that they're not joking.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Primus should bring THE LOCUST on tour.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

if he ain't joking than that singer is just bad.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, do real metalheads like The Darkness?

YES.

George Smith, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

(actually that works for both Primus and Darkness so yay)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the only bone of contention i have with George.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think he's bad either - he hits the notes well enough for me, anyway. He's the easiest singer in ages to do an impression of, though, which is a Good Thing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Joey DeMaio and Manowar to thread. It's time to once again do battle with

false metal!

George Smith, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

He's the easiest singer in ages to do an impression of
personally his high notes are bit hard for me to reach (though I guess I might be able to do his blubbery thing) but I wish you had said this at the Xmas fap. I sooo would have made you prove it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OH NO! WE'VE BEEN HIJACKED!!

Google image search: "false metal"

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

my problem with The Darkness is this:(and this is the last time i'll talk about them) Their are tons of current unironic power metal bands who do what the darness are attempting to do only they do it a lot better. and the darkness aren't funny. to me. and their songs aren't very good. to me. there. that's it.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Kiss didn't [Spinal Tap] find it funny in the slightest...

Spotting evidence of funny bones in Kiss is hard work.

George Smith, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

hey scott can you recommend me some good unironic pop-metal (is that the same thing as power-metal) bands? I'd like the Donnas more if the singer was more animated vocally (though the major label stuff is an improvement there) and I'd like the Darkness more if the singer was animated in a less ironic manner.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(oh and the Donnas and the Darkness are as close to what I'm looking for as I can find on the radio)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Google image search: "false metal"

More evidence of technical faults nagging Google search engineers.

George Smith, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

...some good unironic pop-metal...

Please send dour pop-metal now.

George Smith, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Did real metalheads like this:

http://www.xenafan.com/movies/bod/images/burger05.jpg

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

No still no probot for me. I'm a bit strapped for cash til I get my next paycheck. Which will be the 27th I believe. I'll get it for sure though and let you know what I think. I wish he'd done a few different album covers - like since Mike Dean's on one tune they should have had an alternate cover done by Pushead in the "Animosity" vein.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but I don't think a relationship can last if you hate the other person

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny, you hear about my new guitar?

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like "Way You Move" more than "Hey Ya" but "Hey Ya" is a good tune too. I prefer "Teen Spirit" but I'm not really sure what aspects/qualities are being compared by this question.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No whats your new guitar??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I can show you a picture of the modle if you want, but I'll discribe it first.

It's a Fender Stratocaster. It's marron with a black pick guard and it's left handed.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like this, but it's left handed.

http://www.zzounds.com/media/brand,zzounds/p20639H-df1b4f235931493f090485dfffa41af0.jpg

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

wait aja, is your guitar left-handed?

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice. Great color. I have a maroon Fender Heavy Metal Prodigy Strat from back in the early 90's with a black pickguard. Also has a Duncan Thrash Metal humbucker I put in later. Of course I spray painted parts of it and beat it to death but Fenders are TOUGH guitars and its still my favorite to play.

I'm glad you got yourself a southpaw git. Didn't you say you were wanting a lefty guitar??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. I'm left handed.

The only problem is my other guitar has a different neck and I have to get used to the one on the stratocaster. I'm writing something on the right handed one and then trying to play it on my left handed one. I also got a couple pedals.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess i need to pronounce my sarcasm just a little louder.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't talking to you

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet. It used to be a great day anytime I got some new gear. I was such a gear head. I guess I still am but I can't afford to go buy new stuff all the time anymore.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my new guitar.

I'm thinking of calling it 'Kitty'

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What pedals did you get??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you in a band yet?

Jole, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

can i kill myself now or do i have to wait?

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry dude. Who are you talking to??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a flanger and an overdrive with distortion.

I'm not in a band yet.

First I need friends who know how to play an instrument, then I can think about starting a band

can i kill myself now or do i have to wait?

I'll tell you what I told jess.

Go right ahead.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean what kind of flanger and overdrive with distortion??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY AJA WANNA BE IN MY BAND WE SOUND LIKE US MAPLE + GAMELAN WORLD MUSIC.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean what kind of flanger and overdrive with distortion??

This kind.

http://www.chrisguitars.com/boss-bf2-0703.jpg

Where do you live Jon?

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is a newer version though. Has more jacks

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ROCHESTER NY BY PROVIDENCE RI X NYC

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I LIVE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY!!!

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an old Boss Bass Flanger somewhere. Its cool. Boss really does rule in the world of basic effects pedals.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah.

Does yours have a setting that says "gate pan" or something like that?

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine have jacks for guitar and bass

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine just had one input. I don't really like the idea of flange on bass but the bass flanger sounded great on the guitar cause it flanged everything an octave lower; which I actually preferred cause flangers can get real trebly if you're not careful and will slice your ear drums to shreds if you're playing real loud with a band in a garage or basement.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure mine was exactly like that one in the picture there other than that - mine was called the BF-2B.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to use my flanger and distortion at the same time.

It gets really loud though

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my OD/DS pedal

http://www.bosspedals.co.uk/acatalog/OS-2.jpg

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

When I recorded I preferred to use nothing but my Metal Zone through my amp rig. If I wanted an effect in there I would usually put the effect on a clean tone and layer it on top of the dry crunch. I'm really into My Bloody Valentine - "Loveless" so I like to use layering to create an oceanic depth effect.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I haven't recorded anything yet

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never played with the Overdrive/Distortion pedal. I always preferred the metal pedals. Boss Metal Zone and Ibanez Powerlead Soundtank were good ones. And I had this Boogie tube distortion pedal with a couple different channels that just rocked until I fried it.

Recording is the best. Just being able to take something you've written and run with it and see where the recording process takes it and seeing/hearing what it becomes is my favorite part of being a musician. Playing live is cool but you can't really be that creative playing live - you just play it like you already know it. Recording gives you the chance to try so many new things. You're gonna love recording.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably.

But I have to get better at playing; and desiding when the song is right. I've changed this one song so many times. It doesn't sound much like it did when I first came up with it. It has pretty much the same rythm to it though.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, I've got to get a nap. good luck. You remind me a lot of myself at that age. Just remember if YOU like something you come up with, then its good.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks.

It'll be good acoustic. I know it will be.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

This is like three threads in one.
I pick SLTS.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Who in their right mind could compare these two songs? One is by a forgettable, boring, irrelevant act while the other changed the world. Lyrically, there simply isn't competition.

Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend.
She's over-bored, self-assured,
Oh know, I know a dirty word.

Hello, hello, hello
How low?

The last two lines (self-assured/dirty word), in terms of context and technical prowess, make 'hey ya' (nice song title, geeks) look like elementary poetry at best.

'but got it just don't get it
until there's nothing at all'

Uhhh....good one?

JesusMaryChain, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, i remember this thread. it's the one where i talk about the darkness for 4 hours. Oy, i need a vacation.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote for Nirvana here and btw, Aja really oddly reminds me of Geir. God onry knows why.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

How do I remind you of Geir?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

For real, I don't know! Maybe it's the earnest way you coped with the anti-13 year old-bit upthread - reminded me of how Geir blissfully ignores the occasions he gets Southall irate (but without the blissful ignorance).

Oh forget it, I'm loaded on tons of non-prescriptive drugs this week and all my talk is confused. Carry on.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir has the heart of a 13 year old girl.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

he keeps it on his desk in a jar.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward, ladeez and germs!

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
They're both irritating novelty songs that got way too much play.
