GSL: S&D

Gold Standard Labs recordings. Search and Destroy. Is any of it particularly good? They sent me pretty much everything, and I must admit that a lot of it I put on and rip out of the player almost immediately. Mostly seems like distorted, tuneless, atonal (for the two are not the same!) CabVolt+Heroin+Lightning Bolt stuff but without any of the quality of those bands. But hey, I could be wrong - in fact, I often am - so I'm hoping someone might school me on what of the label's output is particularly worthwhile. Am I missing something?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

nope. you pretty much nailed it.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

gogogo airheart is a better band then the rapture will ever be and have released or rereleased all their output on GSL with a new one in the works. Why are they so good. well mainly the bass player is amazing and also other reasons. GSL also lauched !!! when the rest of the indie world wouldn't take a chance on dance music. Le Shok - We are electrocution is probably the best punk album that sounds like punk before 1980 in twenty years. Of course there is the locust if you like that kind of thing and yeah just like any label bands come and go and sometimes release albums that shouldn't be released.

twelve, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

!!! & Out Hud are incredibly melodic.

-_-, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like the !!! album as much as I expected. Mohinder was pretty fucking great. Chris Thomson out of Circus Lupus etc has a new thing on GSL, The Red Eyed Legends, which is pretty good Fall/Lungfish-y type gear. I love The Locust in the face of almost total dislike in this place, and after that it's a bit hit and miss but I think they're a good label overall.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i really liked the Sunshine album that they reissued. i'm probably the only one.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I second the Gogogo Airheart pick. ExittheUXA is a nice little art-punk LP. The first Rapture 7" is good too (although this is a reissue of a recording another label put out).

SEARCH: THE VSFUCKINGS

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the singles comp 21:51 (on gsl) is best, but the more "mature" (ha ha...nice triphop interlude losers) album (nervous circuits) on honey bear is pretty good too.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

phil, i must say i never had you pegged for liking any of this stuff!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you're always trying to pigeonhole me, you bastard strongo! i don't care about fingers pointing at me... ha! just kidding. anyway, no, for the most part, i don't (though i was a huge fan of mohinder, heroin, the 1st antioch arrow, the VSS and other bands whose names i'm forgetting, back in the mid-90s). though i did put in one GSL promo the other day that i was really digging - unfortunately i can't seem to find it now. seemed to do a pretty good job of suicide/cabvolt updates without being utterly retro and thin. with i could find it on my desk to confirm my thoughts!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the new Vaz album is on GSL, isn't it? and the new Quintron? I haven't heard either, but they're both bound to be at least passable. and the mohinder discography reissue is good.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

- the locust remix 12"... "well i'll be a monkey's uncle"
- the locust /arab on radar split
- gogogoairheart stuff (twelve OTM about the rapture)
- le shok
- pleasure forever / the slaves stuff was deece.
- convocation of was ok... sorta... maybe... if i squint...
- i am spoonbender kicks ass
- vss stuff is classic.
- xbxrx/quintron... whoop!
- chromatics are pretty cool.
- the faint's 12" with sonic youth cover...
- all the old !!! and outhud stuff was great a few years ago when that whole thing wasn't played out.
- get hustle i like.
- t tauri...eep!

i dunno... frankly, gsl was more relevant before post-punk became the flavor of the [insert time unit here]. right now they're dabbling around trying to find footing and move on. witness the country roots starvations... the indie hip-hop sub-title, etc... year future will probably be good. i'm looking forward to red eyed legends. sonny's been around and does good but they've taken a hit to the white hipster belt over the post-punk's popularity.

They had a free compilation with an issue of Skyscraper last year that I thought was pretty good.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i agree as well that GSL is trying to find footing again. look for the new kill me tomorrow to make a little noise soon.

twelve, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The VSS stuff NOT on GSL is way better... Are they reissuing it.

Also, Gravity > ThreeOneG > GSL.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon OTM with the >>>

Gravity rulz / ruled

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Also:

Antioch Arrow > Heroin

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a little tougher. Those two 7"s alone (the s/t paper bag one and 'all about Heroin') were better than almost all of Antioch Arrow's stuff...the Heroin LP...not so much...

I prefer Angel Hair to both tho!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna be in a band that sounds like US MAPLE + ANTIOCH ARROW.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll buy that 7"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bad I can't play! I'm going to be playing with someone from a $BANDINP1TCHF0RKB3STN3WMUS1CSECTION though! haha, god

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

gravity was >>> gsl. the uoa 12" is still something i listen to regularly.

msp, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

gravity was probably the best indie label of the 90s

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

that soiled doves record is one of my favorites of 2003.

Kevin Erickson, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

we've done a thread on gravity before, but to reiterate, the following releases are essential:

all heroin
antioch arrow's first LP
men's recovery project 7"
black dice 7" (how the fuck did they end up on gravity? not that they don't fit, but they're just far removed from the san diego hardcore scene.)
angel hair 7"
evergreen 7" for the emo fag set (sunny day who?)
clikatat ikatowi 'river of souls'

eh, probably some more.

IAN J0HNSON, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

philip, you can pretty much ignore every post on here except for msp's. gsl had the best t-shirts.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. it's funny how this thread got me to dig out my gravity records and then compile that screamo list. why, this is the first time i've indulged in nostalgia in.... a while. i'll have to find that gravity thread.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"not that they don't fit, but they're just far removed from the san diego hardcore"

actually members were part of a LA/san diego band called t tari or something, an album actually is going to be mixed right now by the remaining musicians and will be finally released. they have roots in socal is what i'm trying to say..

twelve, Thursday, 19 February 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

right, right...the split with VSS with the shark on the cover. I have that record.

And as far as Black Dice being on Gravity it made perfect sense at the time - they weren't playing greenhouses and art galleries back then. They were smashing ceiling tiles and mic stands in basements. But they seem to like to keep that a big secret.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 19 February 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I know that. I was more refering to the geographic distance between the two--it was their first release, so it's odd that it's on a label all the way across the country. (until twelve filled me in, and now it maeks perfect sense.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 19 February 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Intriguing!

Bummer of a break-up, Hal. Anyone else sorry to see GSL bite the dust?
