there's a thread in the archive where all of us bemoan the lack of excitement at last year's, and i'm sure tonight's will be much the same. but let's imagine what might happen! i think it's live this year maybe? god i hope davina's not presenting again. they should have
done what they did in 94 with suede(ten years ago!) and have franz f do the first post-ad break bit.

missy, alicia & gwen stefani are supposed to be doing a song together.
(remembers the madonna/christina/britney thing)
they wouldnt.....would they?

Outkast featuring Beyoncé - c'mon!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Moment Ever!

KLF and Extreme Noise Terror opening the show... Fainting, classical music bods running for the exits... YEAH!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhh .. the KLF. the memories .. what a wonderful moment in Brit awards history. were the organisers awre the KLF were going to do all that ? or was it all spur of moment with the sheep etc ?

bjork / pj harvey 'satisfaction' was good. 95? 96?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's face it, the Brits are always lame. Fucking Cat Deeley is presenting it. The WORST thing is clearly the duets though, ESPECIALLY that Bjork Peej AREN'T WE ALT fest.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Related article in the Guardian: Why the Brits don't rock.

scottontharox (scottkundla), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a minute, Cat as in the ex-MTV veejay?

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember the bjork/peej duet, I thought it was embarrasingly bad, and I like bjork and p j harvey.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! busted do 'teenage kicks'!
jamie cullen & katie melua do 'lovecats'!

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Th Bjork/PJ duet was extremely cringeworthy, seemingly there was a 25% loss in audience during their performance.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's hope for an explosion!

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

missy, alicia & gwen do rubbish version of 'kiss'
white stripes do weird acceptance video message
chis moyles pops up to remind us just how loathsome he really is
dido = very milky tea

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Accidental or near-accidental nudity is the new rock and roll.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

good god, the fiddy skit was awful. also dizzee keeps getting passed over.

outkast were decent (offensive to dead people though? maybe). "love cats" made me want to vomit. nice to see beyonce win...ok have to do some work now, no more for me.

marcg (marcg), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Outkast featuring Beyoncé - c'mon!

b-but it wasn't a duet. it was outkast being outkast then beyonce being beyonce (with a hint of tina turner) with no duetting whatsoever (unless it got better after I turned over)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

duran duran win 'lifetime achievement' or something
simon gives speech that seems to embarrass even the rest of the band
i'm fixated on andy taylors hair, it cant possibly be real?

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Scarlett Johanson, obviously a massive Darkness fan.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Darkness' instruments were just lying waiting for the "surprise" performance they were "coaxed" into after winning best album. Hmmm...

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, Lemar beat Dizzee Rascal: the terrorists have lost.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that the event featuring Jarvis Cocker's arse and Michael Jackson's harem?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: that way of turning all the songs into one weird-ass mix in the video inlets before each award: dud. Now, in my mind, "Bring Me To Life" and "21 Questions" are all part of the same song.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, like Dizzee Rascal seeming to appear in Will Young's video. That was a bit odd.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

for me, the surprising hits were Jamie Cullum, Busted and Muse; whilst andre/beyonce non-duet, missy/gwen/alicia's Kiss, and Scarlett Johansson's new look were total disappointments. overall highlight is probably busted, followed closely by Kerry Mcfadden's ill-timed fart joke.

lid, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So much for the thread title...

Do you reckon the stage was plunged into darkness before Beyonce came on specifically so she wouldn't have to make eye contact with Andre 3000?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I felt so sorry for Muse (well, as much as I can for the seventh worst band in Britain), because as soon as they came on stage to *rock*, the audience stopped moving. Entirely. The crispest silence you could imagine.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a minute, Cat as in the ex-MTV veejay?

yes Siegbran she's now the most popular female presenter on British TV (also hosts ITV's main chart show and co-hosts BBC's Fame Academy) - i've gone off her a bit since those MTV days tho

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: that way of turning all the songs into one weird-ass mix in the video inlets before each award: dud.

Agreed - it worked well last year but this year seemed clumsy and lacklustre

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed.

all that industry chatter though!! who miked up the tables?
they were louder than the bands.

the duran guitarist had the most out of tune lead solo-ing i ever heard. it was like nigel tuffnel only nowhere near as good.

ITV2 had 'backstage at the brits' afterwards. it looked deathly dull.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, like Dizzee Rascal seeming to appear in Will Young's video. That was a bit odd.

The best idea...evah?

As usual, I'm ill again and drifting off to sleep last night, I felt worse when BBC World informed me the Darkness had "swept the board". The Lemar thing was kinda a shocker, also I'm somehow not suprised ILM ain't reacted to the Jaxx win (last I looked, one of the UK's biggest selling indie (label) records). I'm vaguely impressed Missy even showed. And Justin's hair makes him look like he's trying to become the physical reverse of Michael.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"And the award for best international female solo artist goes to....The Darkness! Aw, let's let them do another song."
