Taking Sides:
Which is the more relevant between Tonight's (or in General)Brit Awards, NME's Brat Awards and The Grammys?

Depends on which forest you're standing in, the noise of the most relevant tree...

Globally? Always the Grammys.

In Britain? Sometimes the Grammys, sometimes the Brits. Then the Mobos. Then the Brats. These days the Mercury beats all of them - it's the one award that gets people thinking about 'the state of music' and it actually has a big positive effect on sales (if only for that album).

You don't think The Brit Awards have a big positive effect on sales , Tom? Isn't that the whole premise if the Brit Awards?
NME Brats are pointless. Especially as in recent years its not been an alternative to The Brits that it's alleged to be. They also seem to be the least covered by the rest of the media.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

They used to (Brits that is) but I don't get the feeling its such a big deal now - the coverage was all about rock and roll bad-boyism or potential Mick Fleetwood presenter hilarity and with those angles scrubbed away the media aren't so keen.

I'm also not sure that The Grammys help sales of it's winners in Britain.
As for The Mercury Music Prize it gets the winners a media profile but I dont think it exactly boosted the sales of Badly Drawn Boy, Dizzee Rascal etc to mega platinum status.

Ivor Novello rules. The one and only award that matters!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The one Ronan Keating always wins? Didn't know you were a fan of his melodic soft pap.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess Ronan Keating winning Ivor Novello's is first and foremost a sign of a crisis when it comes to good melodic pop writing. Andy Partridge and Neil Finn have both had their share of well-deserved Ivor Novello awards though.

"Andy Paltridge"?

(sorry)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy Partridge?

Won his "Fair Share"?

i.e. more than one?

Looks like no-one at all cares about tonights Brit Awards.
Music Industry In Crisis!!!

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see 'em myself, but does anyone in the US even broadcast them anymore? BBC America? Anyone know?

The Darkness rock music's Brits

Glam rock sensations The Darkness have been named best British group and rock act at the 2004 Brit Awards.
The band won the first two of their four nominations, while Dido, Dizzee Rascal, Daniel Bedingfield and Busted follow with three each.

Rock and R&B take pride of place, with Beyonce Knowles and OutKast teaming up on stage at the ceremony which is under way at Earl's Court, London.

Justin Timberlake won international male, while Busted were best pop act.

The former N'Sync singer will hand a lifetime achievement award to Duran Duran.

He told the audience: "It's a fancy award. My first Brit - I'm honoured."

Pop-punk stars Busted will perform Teenage Kicks

The Darkness were one of the success stories of 2003 after selling 1.2 million albums in the UK since July.

Frontman Justin Hawkins said: "It's a real privilege, a tremedous honour and a real achievement.

"I have to say we probably are the best British group."

Later, he said they were "honoured and privileged" to win the rock award - "apparently they created this especially for us".

They are also nominated for best album and British breakthrough act.

Busted, who are also up for British breakthrough act, performed a cover of The Undertones' Teenage Kicks early in the show.

Absent nominee Daniel Bedingfield - in New Zealand recovering from a car crash in which he broke two vertebrae in his neck - took best British male.

Model Naomi Campbell - who was supposed to present him with his prize - also did not show.

He accepted his award from host Cat Deeley by telephone - but had trouble hearing her.

"I can't hear what you're saying, I just want to say thank you, can I do that?"

Bedingfield is also up for best British album.

Dido - nominated for best British female, best British album and best British single - also pulled out of the Brits, to rehearse for her world tour and write new material.

Beyonce is nominated for best international female and album
Her place in the ceremony will be filled by a duet between best-selling British easy listening artists Jamie Cullum and Katie Melua - The Cure's Love Cats.

The ceremony's other performers will include rapper 50 Cent, rock group Muse and a collaboration between female stars Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani.

One of the most hotly-anticipated acts will come when Beyonce Knowles - nominated for best international female and best international album - joins forces with OutKast.

OutKast have dominated the US single and album charts for the last two months, and are also up for best international album as well as best international group.

Why I don't care much for the Brits these days = The Darkness = Best British Group.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure their success means that we will be inundated by loads of 70s/80s hard rock clones this year. Maybe 'Harry' will make it after all.

It's going to be like when major labels signed every 'grunge' and 'nu-metal' band going.
