am listening right now. hmmm. interesting. (and sorry, kids, it's watermarked up the yazoo, so no file trading of it from my end.)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

title: A Grand Don't Come for Free. out May 18.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My initial disappointment at this not being the sequel to Savatage's Streets: A Rock Opera has been alleviated by the prospect of a new Mike Skinner album. Is it any good?

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmmm. i can't tell if i'm enthused about this or not.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations.

scg, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure if it's good yet or not--even on the half-listen I've had so far it's obviously very much a grower, and it seems to have an overarching narrative, one of those all-or-nothing jobs. hmmm.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there any guest appearances?

scg, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard the Chris Martin appearance yet, though maybe I did and just missed it. "Fit But You Know It" is the prize so far.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it on Vice Records again?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a Chris Martin appearance? Ew.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

rumor has it Richey Manic is buried under the goal post at Wembley

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe an English person can start a proper thread on this now?

scg, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe you can fuck off?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

no no, be English, say "piss off" (or, if you = l33t, "sod off)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I do intend to discuss this in some detail later, but today is a busy office day and my original plan was "oh good I'll talk about it right away" but (a) I'm busier than anticipated and (b) the songs really are fairly, well, not involved, or maybe they are and I'm wrong, but not just word-heavy but entirely dependent on narrative, so I'm going to let it sink in a bit first.

yes, Nate, we must be "proper" about this.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

most immediate impression: the music's even less heavily-worked-over than on the first one (not a bad thing at all, though I'm not sure how good a thing it is right now, either), and while it's much the same idea as before it's more laid-back . . . I want to say "pastoral" except that isn't actually right, but definitely more English, if you can believe that (at least that's how it's reaching my Yank ears), less "I'm announcing myself (and thus my Englishness)" than "I'm being myself (and I happen to be very English), more everyday." so maybe it's a bit more boring, which can have its attractions as well. haven't figured out what those might be yet, though.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a thread about this already with mark p spilling the beans:

The Streets - "You're Fit And You Know You Are"

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"more everyday" meaning "more myself [himself] in a day-to-day mundane sort of way" not "more and more myself [himself], every single day," I mean.

it's finished now. overall: a bit boring but promising. will report after another play.

xpost: there we have it then.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

with more listens it has grown on me but i do still have serious reservations about the production, which on the whole feels a lot clumsier. the beats especially seem much less finessed, and too many cases almost cursory.

i do like the album lyrically a lot but it's nowhere near as funny as opm.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"and IN too many cases"

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you people get ahold of these awesome albums like months before us normal people do?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

early deadlines.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

So, not as good as Original Pirate Material, then? Sigh.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel awful saying this, but one of the first things that came to mind after digesting a grand don't come for free were those accusations from skinner's former chums claiming that he'd plundered beats from them and not given them credit on the first one.

i went back and listened to original pirate material again last week and couldn't believe how expertly assembled a lot of those productions felt in comparison. it genuinely doesn't feel like anything on this record was produced by the same ears and hands that made, say, "has it come to this".

but then, and this is a gigantic caveat, i have yet to listen to a grand don't at high volume or with headphones.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dry Your Eyes" is the song he did with Chris Martin, though it's been re-recorded for the album because the people in charge of Coldplay thought it was shit and wouldn't let it be released.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I do wonder what the people in charge of Coldplay would consider shit.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't really see how it's any better or worse a song than that thing martin did with faultline. i'm obviously in the minority here but i would've liked to have heard their version.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

All this Martin/Coldplay talk is extremely distressing to my digestion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

He shoulda covered "Eat Y'self Fitter" on the new one. with the coldplay dude. that woulda been exciting.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that might've been cool.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha "not as good as Original Pirate Material" = "Dan will loathe this album with a passion equivalent to the kinetic energy of a supernova rather than being largely ambivalent leaning towards irritated with brief flashes of 'okay, I do like that track, but no more than any other piece of music that doesn't actively piss me off"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan did you ever hear the extra Audio Bullys tracks under the alias the Janitor Sessionz? "Do It For Love" and "Plugged In" etc?

Sorry this thread just reminds me.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're saying it doesn't live up to the "expert production" (cough cough) of the first one he really is in trouble!

bugged out, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ro, I didn't hear them! NOW I MUST.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

in other news, i hear dan and ned don't like justin timberlake, dom doesn't like dizzee rascal, anthony miccio dislikes kish kash, and i'm not too fond of "hey ya".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

...ILX is in its heaven,
all's right with the world!
