Have you ever sold anything because of ILM?

Ok..

I don't know Nate and have no problems with him because well, I don't know him but no offense - after reading all the whinging about backpacker rap on here I actually SOLD all my indie-rap stuff 'cause i could not disassociate it from that.

Has this ever happened to you?

jimmy the doomed saint, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

and maybe my secretly canadian stuff 'cause i was tired of reading about it. it seemed to be a bit of cliche. that may or may not be true.

jimmy the doomed saint, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've bought stuff because of ILM that I've later sold.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My soul.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah same here. that awful skids-techno of audiobullies and marcello's recommendation of joss stone.

(positive note - probably got into the streets, justin timberlake and nerd because of ilm)

jimmy the doomed saint, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

all the talk about dizzee rascal had an odd f/x. i've still not listened to my promo copy. guess i was waiting for the ilm hype to die down a bit.

jimmy the doomed saint, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That way you'd be even more inclined to be prejudiced towards "not as good as the hype proclaimed".

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, i just want to clear my head of all the ilx crap before i listen.

jimmy the doomed saint, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i disowned (and was unable to sell when i tried) all my britpop thanks to ILM

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think i've had this yet. The things i like have been too strong to be dragged down by negative comments, the things i don't like are not good enough to be raised up.

The records on which my opinion could be swayed, or havent formed an opinion one way or the other on, i don't think i would have bought.

If it was not for slsk, this might be a different scenario. In the past i took a chance on records, spent money on things that weren't that good. Now i take my chances on slsk, which means i only buy records i really like, i dont need to piss my money away that way anymore, which i'm pretty glad about

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the least you coulda done is sell it to me

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Although if i had made the mistake of owning any indie-rap, i'm sure the ilm discussions on such would have prompted me to wash my hands of it pretty quick

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, ilx taste NEVER is reconciled with mine. so i tend to ignore alot of the threads on here. though - called racebannon and the darkness first (though I thought the darkness stunk and still do).

jimmy the doomed saint, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but I gave away my Momus CDs because of ILE.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hip-hop on indie labels is inherently bad - its true!

Lil' Jon, Kayne West and David Banner are good.

Wait Lil' Jon is on TVT isn't he? Is he like sort of shitty? Or sort of good? Or? Hmmm...

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hip-hop on indie labels is inherently bad - its true!

Yeah, that Master P certainly is awful, as is everything on Tommy Boy.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

nate are you repping master p now!!! does this mean you finally heard burbans and lacs

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Where did all this "indie rap is bad" shit come from?

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't figure up what anyone means anymore, but I do have the "I Got the Hook Up" single. Holla if you hear me.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

self-conscious white people

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oops sold self-conscious white people?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why this is the case on ILX...but I'd say a huge portion of hip hop fans who like indie rap also love mainstream hip hop..

On (OMG INDIE RAPSTER!~!!1!) Blueprint's website, he and his fans talk about Jay-Z, Kanye, etc....w/positive opinions too.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I work for a entertainment industry staffing agency

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why this is the case on ILX

should read "isn't the case" obv.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Not quite yet (though I have learned to at least appreciate "Bout It Bout It"). I've just ditched my irrational indie-damaged hateX0r of him; he is now my go-to guy for derailing "independent rap" arguments.

I used to be the ILX rep for indie-rap-yay-mainstream-rap-boo drivel but you know that Woody Allen movie where it turns out that kid who was uncharacteristically becoming an arch-conservative just wound up having a tumor in his brain? It's like that.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(1st para trife; 2nd para djdee; hooray xp)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

if this turns into another smug indie rap apologists thread then yall about to see some un conscious white ppl

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but I like both indie and mainstream....why must we go to extremes? I just like GOOD HIP-HOP.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah man!! labels are for jars!!

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

oh shit, it's on again

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ho Ho good jab mate.

But fer serious, 2001 - the year of Cold Vein and the Blueprint. (And the Fix too, I think that was 2001)

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Never mind, Fix was 2k2

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the Mississippi records more than Bazooka Tooth but I liked Bazooka Tooth more than I liked Chicken and Beer, which I liked more than the new Gift of Gab record but not as much as Lord Willin'

I also like Van Halen

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(ergo I like Tone Loc)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Chicken and Beer more than Bazooka Tooth.
But I liked Viktor Vaughn more than both.

Aesop's sorta worn on me poory. Still got some great songs though.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, to completely hijack thread: Splash Waterfalls, how weak? Worst track on the album by far.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

2001 - the year of Cold Vein and the Blueprint

yeah but what abt mainstream records?

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

btw the fix ws 02

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Um Blueprint dropped at number one.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you ain't blaming "Splash Waterfalls" awfulness on the beat because it's sleazy crunk slow jam magnificence; "Teamwork" is my least favorite because it sounds like a ghettotech remix of a Mr. Clean commercial

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(not that such things are automatically bad, just that in this case it didn't work)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The beat wears on me quickly. As does the lack of a good chorus/hook/verses.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the worst thing about hip hop is that it produces fans like ethan

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i HATED 4/5 of c&b and still seriously considered putting 'we got' on my pazz n jop singles ballot- only other good tracks are hoes in my room and flips sizzurp one LIL FLIP FOR PRESIDENT IN 04

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

a ghettotech remix of a Mr. Clean commercial

when you put it that way i wonder how it couldn't work

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

splash waterfalls got oooold fast though

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

sticky fingaz ft canibus - dont call us mista clean

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Southern Fried Intro, Stand Up, Hard Times, Diamond in the Back, Screwed Up, P-Poppin, Hip Hop Quotables, Hoes in My Room, esp. Eyebrows Down...its a damn good album I think.

After hearing the new uRsher track though, I wanna hear him over som Lil Jon beats on his next album.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

stand up is aight too but i had to hear it on a real tricked out amphitheatre system before it clicked and if youre gonna play that why not just drop the damn rmx w luda and bone anyway

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

still a half-remembered joke compared to southern hospitality/whats yr fantatataseee

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ludacris really digs Nickleback.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

so do i!!

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the ilx pissing matches where people attempt to out do each other's unlikely love for pop music that is generally regarded as crap by people who clearly don't know enough about music to go back to liking such things

seriously, I love it

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yes obv ludacris and i have a case of 'indie guilt'!! i heard their song on the radio and i liked it, fuck off

$$, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather not fuck off, thanks. While I am not a Nickelback fan I was being sincere. Many people I know ae stuck in this phase where they reject any popular/commercial music entirely.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

$$=ilm's idiot manchild

i have good posture, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this what you mean Jimmy? Have you sold the last few now?

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

it's all gone. because of this. i think it scarred me. got to sell the lex sampler and that's that.

jimmy the doomed saint, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

good behaviour!

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha.

btw trife. my grandmother was black. how do you factor my behaviour in now?

ha ha.

jimmy the doomed saint, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i sold them all and bought bruce springsteen albums. ha ha. true!

jimmy the doom saint, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

''While I am not a Nickelback fan I was being sincere''

how do we know? maybe you were trying to fake a love for pop to make yr 'point'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is it that liking something popular results in questioning someone's motives, while it doesn't work the other way.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

it works the other way on ILM all of the time.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)
