I mean, I love "Last Dance" and all, but didn't Wire get bashed for doing this type of stuff in the mid to late 80s?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Gang of Four (but I like those kids what rip 'em off, go fig)

Velvet Underground

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of you have a really fucking weird idea of "underrated".

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Velvet Underground is underrated? By whom?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

By record sales, maybe?

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, maybe if this was 1973, but come on

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The who: seriously overrated

illcentric sounds (illcentric sounds), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Half Man Half Biscuit
Delgados

Peely rates these. I can't see why.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hard to nail the definition but Derek and the Dominoes maybe?

Severely underrated by young hipsters buying reissues but overrated by the likes of Robert Christgau etc.?

pete s, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

'Railwayed' is nice. sounds like danse society goes echo&b.

eleki-san (eleki-san), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh...DATD probably goes in Underrated Overrated...i dunnow

pete s, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I love "Last Dance" and all, but didn't Wire get bashed for doing this type of stuff in the mid to late 80s?

Yes. By DUMB PEOPLE. I mean, I will even vouch for the Wir album.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, Michael. I have to admit I can't even get more than halfway through the A-List.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(though I do get through the first seven or so songs quite easily and enjoyably)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"Derek and the Dominos" is severely overrated for having three or four good songs.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fall after 89 could definitely qualify. But beforehand they were NOT NOT NOT NOT overrated ever not possible sorry no no no.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, there are some shitastic songs on The A-List, like "Feed Me," but those first seven or so more than make for them, I think.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

total sidenote to thread topic but are there any full-length '80s Wire albums you'd recommend over the A-List, Michael? Is the Ideal Copy more listenable overall?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember being quite fond of A Bell Is A Cup... but to be honest with you I haven't heard since the early nineties. Something happened to my copy and I essentially replaced it with The A List.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget 'silk skin paws.' i always try and tough it out till there.

and by gbv i meant in the end justly underrated despite the thundering lip-service overratitude they enjoyed throughout the 90s.

(though frankly the 'under-over' and 'over-under' things seem to me to blur into one another)

juju, Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The bloody Pixies. People talk about them like "Oh, why'd Nirvana have to break up and have Nirvana rip off their sound? Great lost band of the 80s!" Jeez, they're not THAT good.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 19 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Geir. The VU are underrated, more or less totally ignored, by radio and the majority of the record-buying public. This leads critics to exaggerate how great and important they actually were, as if they were on par with the Beatles or Hendrix or something. (And I do really like the first album and lots of their other stuff FWIW. But Rolling Stone's claim, for example, that they were the most influential band of all time is really dubious.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 19 February 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking more along the lines of Flying Saucer Attack or Galaxie 500 -- perfectly fine modest-scale bands that have been semi-ruined for me by friends making them out to be some kind of demigods. I think the overpraising is supposed to make up for their tendency to be overlooked by not only the mass audience but even the critical establishment, which generally B-lists them at best. But see, they get B-listed because they're B-list bands...

spittle (spittle), Thursday, 19 February 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Love

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 18 March 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll second My Bloody Valentine. Loveless is always labelled a classic, even though loads of people dont know who they are, and even though theyre not any good.

dmun, Friday, 18 March 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Limp Bizkit. This means you, Miccio ;)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Pixies? MBV? Underrated by who exactly??

Si Carter (Si Carter), Friday, 18 March 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 March 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have said Felt or the Go-Betweens several years ago, but that is because I started dipping into their catalogues at the wrong points.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 18 March 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, if they'd only had some nice modulations to the relative minor key in bridges.

olde english d, Friday, 18 March 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Suicide.

Overrated by themselves too....

Patrick South (Patrick South), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i have seen some things in my time, but... VU? Pixies? MBV? Love? overrated? sweet Jesus. did i hear someone say Elvis and the Beatles? you might as well. the only way you could seriously overrate VU is to say that they created the universe in six days. and even then...

or are we not talking about music?

i think maybe this thread lost its way at "Kitchens of Distinction", whom i also love, but about whom i agree entirely.

Lee F# (fsharp), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar 2004,

VU are one of the most influential bands ever and are certainly on par with Hendrix and I'd say The Beatles too, if not more.

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't quite follow the thread's premise. And it probably wouldn't hurt for ppl to rate the Fall a bit higher iirc and I do.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 20 June 2009 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

In a 1970 review of Poco's self-titled album, Robert Christgau called them "the most overrated underrated group in America". I've always agreed with him on them. You might also throw in the Jayhawks who usually get good press, but few people know their music.

jetfan, Saturday, 20 June 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Sparks

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 20 June 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

The first band mentioned on this thread is still the best example of this.
