Taking Sides: Hey Jude Vs The Only One I Know

OK, I admit it. This one actually is way to obvious even for me.

The Only One I Know is such a classic song it puts its would be rival straight in the dust from the second Tim Burgess howls "everyone has been burned before"... just perfect.

I like the Charlatans more than I like the Beatles, seriously. But that probably has more to do with overexposure on the Beatles' part.

Charlatans all the way.

I thought it was "everyone who's been in love before."

Anyways, "Hey Jude." No comparison.

Ah feck it, I never was good with words...

I'll go with the Charlatans on this. But only cos you're pitting one group's best song against another's (near) worst.

It's "everybody has been burned before" and it's nicked, word for word, from "Everybody Has Been Burned" by The Byrds.

Granted, I'm not a Beatle lover (or even liker), but "Hey Jude" hasta be one of their songs that really has an effect on me............
it makes me cringe so bad. And then there's the 40 minutes or so of the "nanananananananana....", just to rub it in. But, I heard that some like it!

So, paulhw OTM.

I'm always moved when I hear Hey Jude. I think it hinges around that 7th chord going into "And anytime you feel the pain", and the less-than-enthustastic but always heartbreaking "aaah"s come in. It also moves me because Hey Jude exists *for a reason* (to console a child during his parents divorce), rather than just for the sake of writing a song. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course, but i'ts good to have a bit more depth. Also the fact that during the final verse John mumbles "oh, fuckin' hell".

But mainly it's just the song. What a song. "The Only One I Know" is better?! Oh, come on. It's not.

It is odd how this song has no relevance for me now when i loved it so much as a Beatles-loving 12 year old; i don't even enjoy it in a nostalgic way.

this seems like a(nother) pointless comparison - no offence to the other posters

i like Jose Ferrante's latin-style cover of 'Hey Jude'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

when i first heard 'only one i know' i thought it was the stone roses. hey jude is one of my least favorite songs ever, and i mostly like Paul Mccartney otherwise.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 19 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

both are dreary as fuck.

therefore i'll go for secret option 3. V/Vm's Hey Jude massacre "Hate You" - a 20 min loop of the "na - na - na - nanananana! hey jude!" bit through various types of distortion.

Hey Jude. 'The Only One...' was just another (albeit pretty good)Madchester 'baggy' song, imo. I can't really see any comparison, to be honest...

tale: I was in a german nightclub, the DJ played TOOIK 45 at 33.
We all grooved and dug the slowness, it wasn;t until about 3/4 way through, DJ turned up to 45 rpm.. We thought he'd done it on purpose and was way cool...
