I can't remember what they sound like, but the woman in the red pants is super hot!

while we're at it, praise be to the rondelles.

My album review!!:

The Prissteens Scandal, Controversy & Romance (Almo Sounds). Opening a spring tour for a reformed ? and the Mysterians (finally potential two-hit wonders now that Smashmouth covered the B-side of "96 Tears"!), these blond/brunette/ redhead (one each) chickadees plus male drummer got the street-light broken hearts of primordial '60s ooze right without skimping on its street-fight broken bones. Their CD has them fucking the meanest hound in town, finger-snapping through a Wreckless Eric skinny-tie classic about searching Tahiti for love, telling their baby to beat you up but getting devastated when they catch him cheating, and wisely hiring the guy who produced Blondie's first two albums to help them pull off their unprecedented hybrid of the Sonics and Shangri-Las.

(Which was part of this hard rock roundup, in LA Weekly (and no comments from the Miccio gallery about Rocket From the Crypt, who I very much overrated):

I might've overrated the Prissteens, too, actually; but with no Gore Gore Girls back then (not even a Husbands or a Delmonas, at least as far as I knew), their album definitely seemed exciting at the time...

I had a MAJOR crush on guitar player Leslie (red hair) who bartends at the Lakeside Lounge.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Best song = "The Hound"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

drummer joe (who i do not have a major crush on but i do like) bartends at arlene's grocery.

Is that Meg White on the hood?
I can see her teeth, so I guess not.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "The Hound" about the Hound (their manager & ex-WFMU DJ)? I partied with the Pristeens after a show at that club that used to be on Bleecker (big dance club back then, weird place for a Pristeens show), did whiskey shots with the Hound, a truly lost night. Damn, they were a great band. I mean, the Wreckless Eric cover alone makes them ace.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i LOVE their wreckless eric cover...
was that club on bleecker life?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah- Life! It was a Wed night I think. So odd. No wonder nothing happened w/ the Prissteens, they were playing Life.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I know Jim "the Hound" Marshall was their manager, but let's talk about how this band was mis-managed. I think they rock, are catchy, and could have been huge a la Hole or something. But they started out on Almo Sounds (a major label, right? does this even exist anymore?) and sold about 3000 records. They had many fans (ok a few) in the music biz world, but my theory is that that's because they sent out so many promos. Did they ever tour? Did they ever tour with a decent band? I think Richard Gotterher produced this, didn't he?

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I stand corrected. They were on the Warped Tour I guess.

The ? and the Mysterians tour doesn't count, b/c if you're on that tour you're condemned to the garage rock dungeon for all eternity, with a roomful after roomful of hepcats, waxin all nostalgic.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Hound" went on every mixtape I made for about 6 months there. And the Wreckless Eric cover is so good that it made me go out and buy Wreckless Eric. (only to discover that I like the Pristeens' version better...)

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved the Pristeens, in fact I went to high school with one of them in Indianapolis, IN. She was a total preppie chick then. What happened to them?

Tab25, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, always wondered. I actually thought it was a coincidence. Der.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the Miccio gallery

I found the name for my next band!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

and I actually read that review ages ago. I'm curious what in tarnation made you change your mind.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

a couple hundred much, much better garage-rock bands since then? (same thing that made me change my mind about the prissteens! those were slim times for that kinda music, when i wrote that review...)

chuck, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

chuck -- what is it about the gore gore girls that you find lacking in the prissteens' music?

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, i've given the GGGs plenty of chances (live and on record) (ok, "plenty" = "three or four") and ultimately i just don't think they're... that... good.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

>>chuck -- what is it about the gore gore girls that you find lacking in the prissteens' music? <<

one of the best guitarists on the planet, for starters. and a great singer. and a rhythm section that can pull off r&b. and more than two or three memorable songs. (that said, it's been a couple years at least since i listened to the pristeens album, so it's possible that it's better than i remember it being. either way, the gore gore girls are one of the hardest rocking bands in existence these days. the prissteens never were, i don't think.)

chuck, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

we are better than you ! :P

They played a really wonderful show with thee Headcoats at the cooler once. Shit, I think it was the Headcoats. ? and the Mysterians almost ruined it for me and managed to screw up my memory.

speaking of garage bands, anyone in New York ever see the Shemps play? Thoughts?

danh, Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Chuck next time if ever you listen to RFTC stop thinking about garage rock and start thinking about "Crazy Horses" by the Osmonds.
