I did a story about this years ago, and in addition to the aforementioned, I turned up a crappy Felice and Boudleaux Bryant song called "Baltimore" written for forgotten country crooner Sonny James ("Young Love"). Newman's or Bare's are probably the best Baltimore songs, but I find myself mentally wrestling with the chorus to the Bryants' song all the time:

"I miss my home on the Chesapeake Shore
The shrimp and the shellyfish I adore
And I wanna go home
To Baltimore"

"Shrimp"? "Shellyfish"!?!

And let us not forget acid-rock/metal legends SIR LORD BALTIMORE, whose 1970 "Kingdom Come" LP is the seventh-greatest album EVER!

The Fleshtones, "Girl From Baltimore"
Jonathan Richman, "The Baltimores" (about a doo-wop group, not the city proper)

"Sparrows Point", Richard Shindell:

...I travelled mostly northeast
With my head held mostly down
Cause they said there was more in Baltimore
Where those shipyards never close
You can sell the man your labor
And send the money home

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 19 February 2004 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Mackenzie also recorded an excellent version of Baltimore. Sigh...

Starbuck - "Moonlight Feels Right"

The wind blew some luck in my direction
I caught it in my hands today
I finally made a tricky french connection
You winked and gave me your O.K.
I'll take you on a trip beside the ocean
And drop the top at Chesapeake Bay
Ain't nothin' like the sky to dose a potion
The moon'll send you on your way...haha...Moonlight feels right

We'll lay back and observe the constellations
And watch the moon smiling bright
I'll play the radio on southern stations
'Cause southern belles are hell at night
You say you came to Baltimore from Ole Miss
A Class of '74 gold ring
The eastern moon looks ready for a wet kiss
To make the tide rise again...Moonlight feels right

We'll see the sun come up on Sunday morning
And watch it fade the moon away
I guess you know I'm giving you a warning
'Cause me and Moon are itching to play
I'll take you on a trip beside the ocean
And drop the top at Chesapeake Bay
Ainn't nothin' like the sky to dose a potion
The moon'll send you on your way...Moonlight feels right

Heh. Oh, just remembered "Baltimore" by Peter Case. All songs about Baltimore are about unemployment, abandonment, temptation, poverty, and crime.
