Is the choice as easy at it seems?

― Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't seem easy in the slightest. i love them all!

― jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yersh. If forced, though, I'd pick Joan's cover.

― Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

r.e.m.'s "draggin' the line" doesn't even come close to any of these.

― jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take the Clique's "Sugar on Sunday" and pray I never have to hear that B. Idol cover again. A noxious frat party staple.

― Joseph McCombs, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

o joan how i love thee, crimson or cloven or otherwise

― Etta, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

and rem's cover of the clique's "Superman" doesn't even come close to the original.

― scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna have to go with Joan too. Or possibly the write-in of John Wesley Harding's "Crystal Blue Persuasion" cover.

― martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

not heard the Joan Jett tho i have a feeling it's the best but i'll say Tiffany for now as i don't like 'Mony Mony' that much and think it's waaaaay down the list of Billy Idol singles in quality terms

― stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Tiffany easy

― Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll go for Tiffany.

― daavid, Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You're all fools ... Concrete Blonde's cover o' Crystal Blue Persuasion - it clearly beats John Wesly Harding's breathy debauchery

― Atila the Honeybun (Atila the Honeybun), Thursday, 19 February 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess that leaves me to pick Billy Idol.
( I hope you realize I'm kiddin'". )
Though his L.A. Woman was half-good.
I still go with Joan Jett...

― jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 19 February 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd take I Think We're Alone Now by The Rubinoos, but since I can't do that.. Joan Jett's cover it has to be.

Also, while it's true REM's version of Superman doesn't come close to the original, it's still pretty terrific, isn't it?

― maypang (maypang), Thursday, 19 February 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it was strange that Weird Al parodied two of these on the same album - and both were parodies of the cover versions. I think "Mony Mony" and "I Think We're Alone Now" charted around the same time, so that makes sense.

― billstevejim, Thursday, 19 February 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan Jett's "Hanky Panky" is the best. Followed by The Bangles' Hazy Shade Of Winter!

― Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
Tiffany

but anyway which is the version of crimson and clover i heard on the radio a few months ago that goes on forever and has about a zillion guitar "solos" played through different effects boxes?

― amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The original Tommy James and the Shondells version, seemingly.

― Tim Ellison, Monday, 19 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've really been enjoying the Crimson & Clover/Cellophane Symphony twofer.

― stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cellophane Symphony title track is even more far out than "Crimson and Clover"!

― stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I gotta get Cellophane Symphony, then, if just to hear that song!!! I do have the Crimson and Clover LP--not that strong as a whole album, I don't think.

― Tim Ellison, Monday, 19 April 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan Jett. I luff Billy Idol, but "Mony Mony" reminds me of every wedding, prom, sweet 16, whathaveyou. I can't separate the song from the memories.

― Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan Jett, by a country mile. Thouugh the Tiffany cover was a lot better than her cover of "I Saw (Him) Standing There."

― Randy Reiss (undeadsinatra), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

sixteen years pass...

Greatest cover imo.

Aw, my 16-year old thread is all grown up now.
