Shouty Ladies

I've started on a CD/MD mix called "Shouty Ladies" and I'm after more suggestions. (I'm thinking of a followup called "ineffectual fey-nick-drake-sound-a-likes" but unfortunately there are too many contenders right now, so I think that needs a re-think.)

Anyway "shouty ladies"...

Suzi Quatro (anything) PJ Harvey (early shouty stuff) Kenickie (Punka or Come out 2 nite) Bis (Powerpuff Girls theme tune?) Hole (that shouty-one they always play in clubs but not the "walking study in demonology" one that pisses me off for no good reason) Helen Love (shouty in spirit at least) Kelis (obviously) Bjork w/ Skin -- (v shouty version of Army of Me) Stina Nordenstam (joke)

to get some older acts in there how about some gospel-belt-it-out-ers? Etta James? Loleatta Holloway? hmmm?

New answer? (really must sort out that new-line problem I seem to have)

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

there's a couple of Le Tigre tracks that would fit

m jemmeson, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hole, "Beautiful Son", Poly Styrene, Janis?

dave q, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

poly styrene. I did have her down, though not with Germ Free Ad cos it's not shouty enough!

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lydia Lunch (Teenage Jesus, 8 Eyed Spy, harry crews), if you really want to torture everybody in earshot

dave q, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Slits?

Damian, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, specifically the peel session version of "shoplifting."

"orphans" by teenage jeebus

"decepticon" by le tigre

"shaved pussy poetry" by huggy bear

um, ::coughcough:: yoko (um, hello!)

jess, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethel Merman-"Rose's Turn" from Gypsy, Jennifer Holliday-"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from Dreamgirls, B-52s-"Dance This Mess Around" (I'M NOT NO LIMBURGER!!!), Patti Labelle & the Bluebelles-"I Sold My Heart to the Junkman", Ike & Tina-"A Fool in Love", Janis Joplin-"Cry Baby". Diamanda Galas, Lulu (well, she did do "Shout", after all.) I'm sure I'm forgetting someone crucial.

Sounds like my kinda tape, Alan.

Arthur, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend already suggested Diamanda Galas. Got links to some sound file samples, cos sad to say I don't really know her stuff. (I'll try audiogalaxy when I get home).

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Bags-"Survive"/"Babylonian Gorgon", Frightwig-"My Crotch Does Not Say Go", L7-"Shove".

Arthur, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

er that was meant to be a question. got any links to suitable sound files?

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Defenestration and Crisis.

DJ Martian, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anything from Babes in Toyland, I think they manage the shouty thing far better than Hole did.

Nicole, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

patti smith, janis

Geoff, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, "Hansel & Gretel" from Babes in Toyland would be a fine addition. And if you're going to use a track by Hole, make it "Teenage Whore".

Some older Throwing Muses might be useful in this regard, too (especially their first album). Speaking of Yoko.

David Raposa, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...specifically, on the janis front, Big Brother & The Holding Company doing "Ball and Chain" live at Monterey. Everything else on your CD will pale...

but include anyway
Vindictive - The Slits (also from the peel session)
Dicknail - Hole
February 14th - Huggy Bear (ultimate Huggy Bear girly shouting with bonus shouty bloke!)
and how could we forget:
"C30, C60, C90, Go!"

Jeff, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bette Davis & The Balconettes should not be forgotten. "Shopping on the Internet" is one of the best shouting songs ever recorded. All together now "SOME FUCKER WITH NO LIFE/HAS STOLEN MY ONE AND ONLY APOLLO MOUNTAIN BIKE/YOU SAD MISERABLE LITTLE FUCK/I BET YOU'RE A FUCKING SCOUSER YOU FUCKING FUCKIN FUCKIN" etc. Genius.

Steve.n., Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shampoo? Spice Girls? first Billie single?

chris, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

shampoo "trouble". of course! sorry to all the people suggesting fab punky songs, I guess I'm just a sucker for this sort of pop (the fact that I listed Bis was probably a give away though wasn't it). I'm still adding the slits, babes in toyland and janis joplin tho' you'll be pleased to hear.

spice girls -- not too shouty really (ace, just not shouty). Billie "chazbaps" Piper? I guess maybe... if there's room.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Those ones on Poptones - Ping Pong Bithces? Very shouty ladies, I believe.

Bill, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm, if you must include Shampoo surely it's gotta be "Bouffant Headbutt"? ('When we get you outsiiiiiiiide/You're fuckin' dead!')

D'oh! How could I forget Altered Images, I was playing their first few records only last night. By default, shouty, since the lovely Clare couldn't sing. :-)

Siouxsie Sioux? "Spellbound", for example, if you've already got too much 'punk'.

Jeff, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a mix of Sinead's "Jump in a River" that has some great profane shouty stuff from Karen Finley. I believe Karen has her own dance record, but I can't remember what it's called.

Arthur, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Gossip The Gossip The Gossip and also THE GOSSIP!!

Sarah, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For some good blues shouting, try Koto Taylor.

James Annett, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heart, "Crazy on You". Protect your dogs!

dave q, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mavis Staples -- I Have Leared To Do Without You

Squatwieler -- Hot For Teacher

Joan Fucking Jett -- Bad Reputation

The Pressure... Prolapse... Mocket... Huggy Bear... Nina Hagen... Reptile...

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One of the greatest songs of all time - I mean, in the 90s -
'Love Your Money' - Daisy Chainsaw.

also:
'Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal' - Silverfish (fantastic!)
'Shitlist' - L7
'I Want Your Love' - Transvision Vamp
'He's My Thing' - Babes In Toyland.

DavidM, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eve, Cowboy. Ruby Falls, Dying On The Vine or something from the Heros LP. Stereolab, Trinitone Blast. Kleenex/LiLiPuT

Sterling Clover, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the queen of shouty lady songs is "Saddle Tramp" by Dickless. No question.

As far as best persistently shouty lady band : SPITBOY.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BETTY DAVIS

Melissa W, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ruby Falls

:)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Patti Waters, 'Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair' - all 13 harrowing minutes of it.

Lord God Almighty, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Smith-"Baby It's You", Shocking Blue-"Send Me a Postcard", Jefferson Starship-"Out of Control".

Sorry Alan, I know of no Diamanda links.

Arthur, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have that Patti Waters LP, didn't think anybody on earth had heard of her.

Sean, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Loretta Lynn and Shirley Bassy

chicks on speed, chicks on speed... (i have all of these records too)

bounder, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Belters and shouters should probably be on different comps. Not sure it's fair to mix Shirley Bassey and Kat Bjelland. That said, on the belters front:

Judy Garland / Liza Minnelli
Tina Turner - "River Deep, Mountain High"; "Nutbush City Limits"
Claire Torry (sp?) going bananas on the Floyd's "Great Gig In The Sky"
Kate Bush - "Wow"; "Sat In Your Lap"; possibly "James And The Cold Gun" (live version)
Black Box - "Ride On Time"
The Tamperer feat. Maya ("What's she gonna look like with a chim-nee on her head?")

This is fun! Can I have a copy of the finished article?

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeff -- I think you're right, I'm getting a feeling for at least three different compilations.

* Shouty Ladies of Pop

* Shouty Ladies of Rock and/or Roll

* Absolute Belters

p.s. thanks everyone, i'm following up a lot of leads now to add to the repertoire.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For the Belters :

Etta James - At last my love has come along
Nina Simone- Put a little sugar in my bowl
Liza-Cabaret
Grace Jones- Night Clubbing
Bessie Smith - Graveyard Blues
Bjork-its all so quiet
PJ Harvey -Is this love
Judy Garland- Somewhere over the rainbow
Rufus Wainwright Trafalgar Square
Ethel Merman- Everythings coming up roses

anthony, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yoko Ono is my favourite shouter - though wailer might be a more accurate description (but then Diamanda Galas is a wailer too, and Patti Smith has her wailing moments).

Tina Turner shouts a lot, which suggests that shouting isn't always the quick route to attaining grace.

Guy, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OOIOO - "Right Hand Ponk".
