Taking Sides: Black Sabbath Vs The Verve

I'm no fan of Dickie Ashcroft but "On Your Own", "History", "Blue" and "The Drugs Don't Work" are better than anything Sabbath, and their lunatic front man (who attempted to kill his wife! Surely super PC ILX has thrown all Sabbath records in the bin by now? Pashmina included!), have done. The Verve win this, although they're not as good as Echobelly or Sleeper.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Why have you picked The Verve's shit songs, you fucking crab-apple mulching moron?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Apart from "Blue", obviously.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The title track of A Northern Soul really ought to have caused you to die anyway.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

So now I hate my fifth favourite band ever. Asshole.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

GO AWAY!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Chill out Nick. It's not the end of the world mate.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

How the fuck can a wart use a keyboard anyway?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not the end of the world mate.

Not quite yet, but it's getting there.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Nick - The Verve never did anything half as good as King of the Kerb though. Surely you'd admit that?

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "King Of The Kerb" by Echobelly? Go and steal some apples you fucking cunt.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

If you've not heard it how do you know you won't like it? Cunt.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have heard it, thankyouverymuch. Where do I say I haven't?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

You asked if it was by Echobelly.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Nick - honestly though, who'd you rather spend an evening with? Ashcroft or Wener?

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

So the fact that I asked for confirmation of who it was by means that I've never heard it? I've probably not heard it for eight or nine years, thank fuck, and I always thought Echobelly were shite, so I'm not in the habit of remembering teir song titles.

An evening with Ashcroft or Wener? I'd rather stay in, thanks; in my humble opinion their both cocks.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so glad nutty nigel caught the bullet. He was rubbish.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

They ARE both cocks.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(!?yllaer ,oN ??lla ta esactun-K-C taht htiw deyonna gnitteg htiw rehtob uoy yhW - llahtouN kciS)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, cos that's the only music I've ever liked.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't you write for NME Nick?

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that's your streak-of-piss mate.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Whossat? And why is writing for NME such a bad thing?

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

No Money, as far as I can make out...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Because they have no words in the mag! Who'd want to write for somewhere that has no words?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No money? Welcome to freelancing mate. Goes with the territory.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

buying adjectives wholesale, again, Nick?

ha ha ha!

jimmy the doom saint, Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be pretty proud to write for NME personally... it's a big mag and I still sometimes pick it up.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm, and that's how they stay in business. Soon, you'll have to pay to get your article printed...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No freedom, a shit word count, a boss with an awful haircut, no editorial input, a dwindling audience, lack of relevence, crap pay...

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

but what our the *good* things about stylus.com?

jimmy the doom saint, Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

please name a Verve riff that bests 'into the void', thank you.

what sabbath albums are you familiar with, C-Man?

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

actually stevie - what are yer favourite sabbath albums? i want to pick up some good sabbath. i've got the one with paranoid on it. anymore? (i know nothing about sabbath).

jimmy the doom saint, Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No freedom? Explain.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd bet the Sabbath album with Paranoid on it aint half as good as The It Girl by Sleeper.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy, check out "Volume 4", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sabotage", "Paranoid". tread very carefully w/later albums.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Doomie - i *love* the first album - totally sludgy and wraithful, with this weird mutant late-60s blues band vibe to it. a really dumb and nasty record...

Masters Of Reality is killer too - it has 'sweet leaf' and the aforementioned 'into the void'. total fuzz-browed stoner retardo rock. GENIUS.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Smart is better. (xpost than the It girl)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd bet the Sabbath album with Paranoid on it aint half as good as The It Girl by Sleeper.

You bet wrong. its scientifically, objectively, empirically proven to be BETTER.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, C-Man, what's the point of a T/S between two bands that have no relation to each other, and one of those bands you have absolutely no knowledge or understanding of, beyond deciding you don't like them? What can you hope to achieve?

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you guys insane? Sabbath = SUPER CLASSIC. The Verve = DUDDDDD!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been thinking i've been needing sabbath lately. thanks for the buying tips!

jimmy the doom saint, Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. Why you asking me? Surely by now you've realised you're not exactly going to get an informed or intellectual response? Well are you?

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

point of order stevie,

dave q was brilliant at bringing two dissimilar bands and finding the link!

jimmy the doom saint, Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I'd argue that comparisons between two dissimilar bands makes for cool non-linear discussion.

dude.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i just want to understand why you would waste hours of a very finite life on such a pointless pursuit that yields no intellectual benefit whatsoever. its as intriguing as you'll ever get.

xpost doomie - EXACTLY! it worked because he understood both bands. Dave Q's questions were awesome and hilarious and insightful. this is just... eh.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

asking to take sides when you've no real knowledge of one of them seems dumb. like T/S The Posies vs Shostakovich!!!! what does it yield?

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, when i read this i thought - 'oh dave q why have you abandoned us'?

x/post
hhahahah...!

jimmy the doomie saint, Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

But Asking to take sides when you've no real knowledge of one of them is opening a debate...

Alternate spelling of question: Make me want to like Black Sabbath. Suggest that they might be better than the verve.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, tonight I will listen to "Frosting on the Beater", followed by "Symph nr 13, Babi Yar", and see if I can find anything in common!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Alternative spelling of question, perhaps, if asked by alternative poster. Not in this case though.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Today on ILM, Doomie sucks up to... dave q!!!!!!!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh give it a rest, the pair of you.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have this really odd feeling I'd like Norman in real life. If you're ever up this way give me a bell old boy.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's Norman?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashmina.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

cool.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

who attempted to kill his wife! Surely super PC ILX has thrown all Sabbath records in the bin by now?

Since when has ILX been "super PC"?

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate and ill thought out rants on what constitutes "misogyny" to thread...

(And Norm as well).

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What's up with that Pashmina obsession, C? He's a married man, you know.

dgdfgdfg, Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not adultery if it's gay, is it?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate and ill thought out rants on what constitutes "misogyny" to thread...
(And Norm as well).

Two examples? Is that all you can come with Calum?
