smuggest performer

So who gets the dubious prize? Phil Collins? Billy Joel? Lou Reed? All three often look bored with their own music, and contemptuous of their audience for liking said boring music. Who else should be added to the list?

beck

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Lou Reed finds his own music boring.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Beck sure looked smug on Space Ghost

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Robbie Williams. Andre 3000.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, when I think of a smug musician, I don't think of someone being bored with their own music, I think of someone who thinks they're the shit and that everything they do is great and are super satisfied with themselves.

x-post ENRQ OTM

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

So that's like 98% of all pop stars ever. Man, this thread is illuminating.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

... you mean like 90% of musicians?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Lou Reed is really and truly full of himself.

Miles Davis was really smug too.

Tab25, Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, Nate beat me to it

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I wrong in guessing that most of the people who posted to this thread in all seriousness are a bit smug themselves re: their musical tastes? (again, 98% of ILM etc etc)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was kidding about Ian Curtis BTW, rankle rankle)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate beat me to it again - he must be feeling pretty smug about now

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby Conn

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

a, Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Pharrell is pretty smug, although he has some basis.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate the word smug so much.

And the answer is obviously Robbie Williams.

x-post ha ha

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I'm feeling smarmy

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm never sure exactly how to define "smug"...Is it a sort of expectation on the part of the performer that everyone love them, regardless of the actual quality levels of their performance? Is it a certain expectation or contempt even that the performer holds for the audience? Is it an unwillingness to show any respect for one's own audience and thus not give as strong a performance as one is capable of? If so, both Eminem and 50 Cent 100%.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It'd be all too easy just to say Cliff Richard and leave it at that. But I will, because it's the correct answer. Cliff Richard.

Jason J, Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, maybe smug isn't the right word. I'm thinking of Lou Reed c. the VU reunion, or Phil Collins on this TV special I saw once. Just that feeling of contempt oozing from them, that they've moved so far beyond what the audience asks of them (but not far enough to, you know, not play that stuff).

I always felt Robbie Williams was more "smug" than smug. It's part of his act.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyrics: Robbie Williams "Monsoon":

"So put your hands across the water
Mushroom
Monsoon
Come Soon"

This is just smug 'they'll buy anything' rubbish...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And 'that's a good line to take it to the bridge'. Twat.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Divide them both by a rusty shovel.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Miles was too insecure to be smug. Arrogant, yes, smug no.
