why are so many people convinced that the darkness are "spoofing 80's metal?"
If the darkness sounded 1/10 as good as Redd Kross' "phaseshifter" album, I'd worship the fuckers!!
Discuss..

Well, Redd Kross are good, and the Darkness are shit.

Redd Kross are faboo glorious and put on some of the best live shows I've ever seen to boot. As yet I have heard nothing to tempt me to check out a Darkness show, so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair, Redd Kross have been around a damn long time, and have morphed through various incarnations and styles, whereas the Darkness are, thus far, a one-joke/one-trick/one-album pony.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

alex, i'm glad i don't have to do all the darkness hating by myself. it's a full-time job these days. and you do it really well.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say the Darkness have more in common with Dread Zeppelin (though even Dread Zeppelin have milked that particular joke over at least four or five albums).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers, Scott.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Pardon my ignorance but who are Dread Zeppelin?

Dread Zeppelin play exclusively Led Zep covers....albeit inna reggae stylee with an Elvis impersonator for a lead singer.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they as bad as it sounds?

Ramon d, Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, y'know, they were good for a laugh in...what....1990? But, y'know, even the funniest jokes get old after a while.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You suggesting that the same will happen to The Darkness? ;o)

Ramon D, Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm suggesting that like Dread Zeppelin, they may not be aware of their own "sell-by" date and might continue milking it long after the the joke has ceased being entertaining. But, y'know....who can say?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually listened to the Darkness again on the CD station at the local record store today. My problem is really with that singer. He's just bad, sorry.

It's all about "Zira (Call Out My Name)".

Why would anybody want to listen to Redd Kross after they became a half-assed powerpop band (a/k/a after *Neurotica,* which wasn't as good as the first EP or *Teen Babes* or probably *Born Innocent* in the first place)? This is pretty bizarre if you ask me...

chuck, Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Teen Babes from Monsanto (still criminally unavailable on CD) remains their finest hour.

Because they were not half-assed. I have the memories and ticket stubs to prove it to me at least, the rest of the world may feel free to disagree. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the noisier/punkier/messier Redd Kross to the power-pop Redd Kross, but there's still no arguing with the McDonald brothers songwriting and harmonies. Sue me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Redd Kross have bored me for many many years. The Darkness were immediately exciting, therefore...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the last thing i remember by them was the video for "Annie's Gone" with ann magnuson dressed up like a sea monster. i loved that video. the song was okay too.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

...though it was a co-write with Michael Cudahy (Christmas, Combustible Edison), so not exactly McDonald product.
