Shit. Absolute shit. Grossly OTT pseudo-vampy, sub-ice maiden, thespy, artistically pickled and derivative in lame adult cabaret- stylee drool of wibblings. If you like that kind of pompous, patronising, melodramatic hersterics Diamanda Galas should surely take poll position over Ute Lemper? Read the very funny Peter Conrad interview with her in The Observer a few months back.

Well, I'm actually not very familiar with her at all. I haven't gotten around to listening to the Best of I got a couple of days ago, but now I feel it is my duty to have some kind of opinion after reading Sweetie's impressive pan! Let me get back to you. Isn't she just a latter-day Lotte Lenya?

This sounds great. What to get first?

The German version of Berlin CAbaret Songs and Punishing Kiss .

its meant for drama queens .

I mean it is arch , ausing, vampy and camp. It is theatrical in a really old fashoined sense and it requires a certain sensibilty. i do not mean to disparage theater queens

She's like a German Sam Phillips--acerbic, witty, kinda really attractive in a stark way. The only album that's really any good is the City of Strangers album--there's a gorgeous version of Lady's Who Lunch and a couple of other Sondheim numbers. The Punishing Kiss shows that Germans just don't have a sense of humour--or the right kind, anyway. It ranks up there with Annie Sofie Von Otter's awful Costello collaboration. And ASVO's Weill material is better than Lemper's any day. On the other hand, I imagine she's probably really good on Broadway.

I had to laugh when the last album had a huge sticker on it breathlessly announcing, "SONGS BANNED BY THE NAZIS!" Like, how controversial. Gimme Nico.

punishing kiss is the best album to make death sexy.

two years pass...
Punishing Kiss is fairly crap - the Divine Comedy guy really gets on my nerves - but it's worth getting for the ten-minute Scott Walker composition "Scope J". Her OTT voice is a perfect match for Walker's obscurantist melodrama.

"Lullaby (by-by-by)" is fucking great.
