...before looking at the discography i would have leaned towards classic. skinny puppy, the sound, severed heads, the dole, bill pritchard, chris & cosey, single gun theory, spk. but these are all early in their history.

...looking further along,i am thinking more in terms of "dud".

[ps.:.did a search and only 7 threads mentioned nettwerk]

I quite liked the Manufacture album (featuring pre-fame Sarah McLachlan).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, without a doubt. Ten years past it's prime, but I wouldn't hold that against Wax Trax's "classic" status either.
Why was MC 900 Ft. Jesus not as massive as Eminem is now?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Eminem wears 896 ft. heels?

Why was MC 900 Ft. Jesus not as massive as Eminem is now?

`Cos MC900 Ft. Jesus didn't pander to stereotypes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

By that you mean the swearing, trash-talking misogynist rapper kind of stereotype?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Because truth came back into style?

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Only 7 threads? That can't be right - I must've mentioned Nettwerk something like 7 times myself.

Mostly classic I'd say, but yes, that's weighted towards early on.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic for Severed Heads mainly (despite Tom Ellard being incensed at S R Gilmore's artwork on the Nettwerk Sevhead releases), but also serving as a bridge for getting me into decent jangly guitar rock via Grapes Of Wrath, The Water Walk, etc. back in my high school days. I didn't "stay there" and have forgotten those bands as quickly as I discovered them, but it provided that important lily pad.

And and AND..

Talk Talk's "Spirit of Eden"

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and also releasing some decent late 80s On-U stuff on this side of the waters..(Tackhead, Pay it All Back Vol 2., Keith LeBlanc, etc.)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite liked the Manufacture album (featuring pre-fame Sarah McLachlan).

I liked it, but god has it horribly HORRIBLY dated. "Armed forces... Destruct! DECEIT... LIIIES.. CONTROL...(Yes Sir!)". The only song I can stand on it now is, natch, the one with Sarah McLachlan on it.... "As The End Draws Near".

I'm curious to re-hear their forgotten Ric Ocasek produced followup album... I hated it then, but might like it now.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"As the End Draws Near" is great!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(despite Tom Ellard being incensed at S R Gilmore's artwork on the Nettwerk Sevhead releases)

with good reason. totally atrocious compared to the Volition releases.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

classic for the skinny puppy stuff alone. Also the North American release of the Front 242 stuff should merrit some worth.

hector (hector), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

??? Weren't they on Wax Trax! then Sony/Epic? Maybe Nettwerk handled the Canadian releases for the 242.. but that must have been it.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say, Front 242 were definitely not a Nettwerk release in the States.

Early Tear Garden stuff, anyone?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Nettwerk handled the Canadian releases for the 242

exactly right!

william (william), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

They also put out a version of "Thunder Up" by The Sound, + a remix-single of "Iron Years" in Canada, which I appreciate.

jazz odysseus, Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it wrong to give them credit for the Canadian release of 242 or is that somehow disqualified because I misscited it as a north american release?

????

hector (hector), Thursday, 19 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no doubt that Nettwerk is BEYOND CLASSIC.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Early Tear Garden stuff, anyone?

OHH KAY.

Just feeling a little uptight today.

hector (hector), Thursday, 19 February 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

NO LOEV FOR MOEV?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 20 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeah Whatever"

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 20 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I was about to say. Nettwerk will forever have classic status for me for those first four records I got, no matter how much poop they shovel out the door these days:

Skinny Puppy - Remission
Severed Heads - Dead Eyes Opened
Grapes of Wrath - September Bowl of Green
Moev - Dusk and Desire

Of course a lot of the followups were absolutely fantastic too: Tackhead, SPK, Chris and Cosey, Single Gun Theory, followups by the Pup and the Heads. There was a time when they could do no wrong. The first meh album was Dole, for me.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 20 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

We used to call Single Gun Theory 'Single Drum Theory'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 20 February 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay so we touched on Tackead/Sherwood/Gray Clail. Yeah on Tear Garden. One of my favorite songs EVER is Ophelia. All other mentions, great. I should also add Brothers and Systems. "1/2 for me..." kinda started my infatuation with tech-house. Graceful record.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Friday, 20 February 2004 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Gary Clail..whuppps.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Friday, 20 February 2004 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My God, SPK! They were fantastic. And now Graeme is doing soundtracks!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit.. how could we forget?

THE GRUESOME TWOSOME!

(which I shocked to find out was a dance side project of one of the guys that used to be in Minimal Compact!!)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

put on Severed Heads - "Cusine" last night. sounding absolutely fantastic.

(Jon L), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"PILOT IN HELL" YOU FUXORS

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(Sorry, _Cuisine_ makes me excited and sweary.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

hard to believe how many great songs on that one, I kept turning around to face the CD player saying aloud "Damn, this one's on here too"

the 'golden height/i'm your antidote' transition is incredible.

(Jon L), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OH GOD YES!!!!!! And "Host Of Quadrille"!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

insert entire track listing, basically
