Is it wrong to love The Smiths but still think Vauxhall and I is Morrissey's best work?

Well is it?

Of course not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

it's his most consistent solo album, I like it quite a lot actually. I'd say Bona Drag is better, but that's a singles comp.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No it's not wrong, but I must add...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you'd only be questioned if you had replace "Vauxhall & I" with "Kill Uncle"...(even then, that record has a couple of good moments)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 20 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

This pisses me off. 'Kill Uncle' is fantastic.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 20 February 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite liked Your Arsenal, but Viva Hate! will always be my first choice.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 February 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

in my dream world morrissey makes an entire album that sounds like the teachers are afraid of the pupils.

is their morrissey/smiths stuff that rabid fans despise above all other stuff. or is it all good? is their a consensus amongst fans? signed, just curious

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

But you're saying that you like Vauxhall better than the Smiths' album, yes?

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh heh. That would be something, and I would like it very much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

That would be terrific. And the closest he's got to it (but it's very far from it) is 'Kill Uncle'.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don'tlike Bengali in Platforms or the songs that follow Suedehead on Viva Hate. Not too fond of Kill Uncle either. Best Mozza solo is Bona Drag - Vauxhall and I is great, but could do with a couple of more poppier songs in there. I listen to Your Arsenal more.

NICE! I love the slow moving sinestro creep of that song and the very metal climax. Too bad the rest of the album was flaccid and clammy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Er?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

did they used to do that song live? like a 30 minute mountain jam version? if so, i might have to check ebay for boots.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Kill Uncle is sort of my favorite.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 20 February 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Vauxhall is the one I listen to most including all the Smiths stuff. If this thread is still alive when I sober up I might say something of substance

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 20 February 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Im surprised at all the lurve for kill uncle. i think its moz's worst work by far.

alot of hard core moz fans have no love for oscillate wildly and most of rank. opinions on the solo albums vary...

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 20 February 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

In answer to the original question, well I can't imagine thinking that myself. I'd take any Smiths album way over Vauxhall & I, for joyful lyrical invention alone, never mind the music.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 20 February 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How anyone - let alone Mary! - can say that 'Kill Uncle' is their favourite - even 'sort of'! - boggles my greying noggin! I remember when I first got that album staying up all night listening to it and waiting for it to start sounding good.

'V&I' is great up until about 3/4s of the way through I think. N. is right about none of the solo lps matching the band stuff, but he is too hard on the solo stuff in general.

This just in: 'Irish Blood, English Heart' will be the first single off 'You are the Quarry'... due out end of March. I am very excited at the choice of song.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 20 February 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that "Irish Blood, English Heart, Indian Take Awaayyyyy!!!"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 February 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You Are The Quarry

Cor.

In other other news: watch out for the Foxgloves' ep, Scouse Liver, Stevenage Spleen (forthcoming autumn 2007).

the bellefox, Friday, 20 February 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Your Arsenal and Southpaw Grammar are the only solo full-lengths of his I love in their entirety.
