from nme.com:

BIG STAR are set to begin work on their fourth album - 25 years after the release of their third.

According to Billboard, original members Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens will be joined in the studio by Posies frontmen Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, who have been part of the Big Star touring band since 1993, when they reformed for live shows.

Big Star's last release was the notoriously downbeat 'Third/SisterLovers' in 1978, recorded when the band was falling apart.

Frontman Chilton and drummer Stephens revived the moniker after the likes of REM and Teenage Fanclub cited them as a massive influence.

WHY HASN'T ANYBODY TOLD ME ABOUT THIS!?!?!? This is Big Star we're talking about!! Big friggin' Star!! The three albums they made were three of the greatest albums of all time, despite their complete lack of commercial success!! No joke!! So, will it be great? Will it suck? TALK!!!

"No Sex"! "Guatanamerika"! A few other songs! When he can be bothered Alex is still pretty great

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 February 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha no sex is, what, 20 years old?

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 20 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens play as Big Star with the Posies a couple of New Years Eves ago--it was surprisingly really really good, they really seem to work well together.

Chilton is a New Orleans resident and something of a local quasi-celebrity so sometimes I forget that the rest of the world has totally written him off. He put out a pretty decent record circa 2000.

But why can't these frickin' bands just leave it alone?

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Friday, 20 February 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is this shocking again?

Like all other cases where band members get together to make music 20+ years after breaking up, this is for sure going to suck the big one.

I'm more excited about the fact that Jon and Ken are also planning to record a new Posies album.

Matos when did you turn into Ned?

The hilarious thing was that I was initially copy/pasting Matos's comment to agree with him!

The Surface Noise nailed it in his first post, and god how I love the Posies so I must get the damn box set now it is back in print oh yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 February 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yes! get the box set! i mean it's mostly demos and stuff, but there's some real gems.

the posies box set is totally necessary. 'oh michael' might be my favourite posies song ever...

stevie (stevie), Friday, 20 February 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, the La's back together (well two of them), Big Star back together (well, two of them), The Who still going (well, two of them), it's just a matter of time before the Beatles get back together (well, two of them)...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 February 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. As skeptical as I am about these sorts of things, putting Alex's vinegar together with the Posies' sugar might make for some sweet 'n' sour pop yumminess. But if Alex just does his thing and they just do theirs, with no overlap, it's probably gonna sound like ass.

The Old Stripes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Albeit sweet 'n' sour ass.

Lee G (Lee G), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That's one hell of an x-post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Might be OK, but I have my doubts. The closest Chilton's come to doing "power-pop" in years was the last track on "Man Called Destruction" from...'95, '96?..."Don't Stop." The Posies are all right, kind of lame, but they play well, I guess. The last Chilton album really sucked. The best thing they did at their "reunion" show in Missouri was a T. Rex cover, and "Duke of Earl" was good...I have zero interest in hearing Jon Auer sing "I Am the Cosmos" or Jody Stephens attempting "For You," or even Alex doing, for the millionth time, "Indiscreet." What kind of material could they possibly come up with at this late date? The Posies/Big Star tune "Hot Thing" is wretched. So, prolly ...yawwnn...

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 20 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this is pretty cool. If Chilton has really reconciled himself to recording under the Big Star flag again who knows what he could find in himself? I don't want to hear some by-numbers power-pop tho, just something rocky and bitter cf Radio City, he still has that spirit in him.
