i just picked up a used copy of flemish altruism and was completely suprised there is no thread on these guys. however, i'm not completely sold, yet.

Grell (Grell), Friday, 20 February 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

inindependence is better.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 20 February 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

both albums are worthwhile. flemish altruism is a rawer but there's a lot to chew on. "one of the best live bands of all time" my roommate seymourcash says "earthly aesthetic".

russignon, Friday, 20 February 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i do appreciate flemish altruism. but i think inindenpendece takes their sound and spreads it out more, gives it room to breathe. and it oddly sounds great as a morning album.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 20 February 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, i am enjoying flemish altruism quite a bit, esp. track 4.

before this purchase, i read a review that they were too "emo." that scared me quite a bit..ugh.

Grell (Grell), Friday, 20 February 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

funny, i remember the MAGNET review of inindependence stated that it was a good morning album. i agree about their sound breathing on it.

russignon, Friday, 20 February 2004 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. woogah! flemish elbows to the head!

msp, Friday, 20 February 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the odds and sods collection on My Pal God the best.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 20 February 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I really like that one, but its my only record from them.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 February 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

meh... i liked Pee better.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 February 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Inindependence is not better than Flemish Altruism, and I love both. Flemish Altruism is a sprawling beast of a record, it's got so many ideas packed into it, it's as if the band considered this their one shot to make a record and just executed. Inindependence sounds sterile by comparison. One of the best live bands I've ever seen. For those who haven't witnessed, the drummer would sit in the front of the stage with his back to the audience. So the band would be in a triangle facing each other shooting laser beams of sonic communication hither and yon. Totally classic. Oh, Andee the drummer now owns Aquarius Records, possibly the best record store on earth.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 20 February 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"co-owns"

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 February 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, co-ownz.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i was waiting for gygax! to appear to pour scorn on a minor forest.
let me also, add that I think a minor forest was just an "OK" band. none of their actual albums really work for me, my attention always drifting away by the middle.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

A Minor Forest is A W E S O M E.
Flemish Altruism is A W E S O M E.

but...
RODAN is A W E S O M E R.

(I don't know why I always group these two bands...go get a Copy of RUSTY.)

ddb, Friday, 20 February 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

msp, Friday, 20 February 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone in the bay area agrees: pee was better!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

also, to prove this, you can download all the songs from the first pee album (now more charm and more tender) here:

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Do I wish to hear pee songs?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you do!

Grell (Grell), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Rodan is the awesomist but A Minor Forest were harder-core, scratchier, more obsessive-compulsive, more schizo. Radan were a polished stone.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

after last night after last night it's hard to shine.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

nice!

scott m (mcd), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, if you liked Heavy Vegetable you should definitely check out Pee.

Kelly Green (guitarist/singer of PEE) is one of my favorite guitarists ever.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Song #6 on More Charm is actually titled "Bruce <3's Big Star" (it was written about one of my very best friends!)

But this songtitle says it all "Andee Wants To Impregnate Me With One Half Of Uncle Tupelo".

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's also worth mentioning that Andee Connors also runs the tUMULt Records label (http://www.tumult.net) which has released Souled American, Skullflower and The Court And Spark among others. AMF cancelled the UK leg of their one and only European tour so I can't comment on their live prowess, but I've been reliably informed they were amazing.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 20 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

still the best band i have ever seen live, an inspiration. fuck jack cole and all you other FMBB rejects.

seymourcash, Friday, 20 February 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my you're so horrible.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 February 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

NED!

Pee (or P.E.E.) is the band with Jim Stanley, the guy who told me he knew you back in the Coronado days, or something like that!

For fuck and shame!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 20 February 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
going thru records found my double LP of Inindependence. Was really excited to listen to it again, it's been years and years.

Sadly, this has not aged well for me, at all. Sigh.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 16 April 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

I only just noticed donut's comment there. But the name isn't ringing a bell, sadly.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 April 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

six years pass...

ha now i'm listening to flemish altruism and it sounds great!

A Minor Forest is up and down like the NASDAQ

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 October 2013 01:17 (twelve years ago)

inindependence will always be golden.. the variety of instrumentation and sounds on the album is remarkable, so many rich, clean timbres and the contrasting vocal deliveries. agree w/whoever said it is a morning album, we purchased this on a summer road trip through north carolina, the week it was released, great open road record. "the smell of hot" worked, if you were ruined on sunday morning. roommate was a fanatic, he used to set up his drums backwards (in front) at shows, in the model of andee connors' setup. these records (FA, Inind..) always felt more soulful and deeper than those of june of 44, rodan, don cab etc. great guitar tones as well.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 4 October 2013 03:42 (twelve years ago)

they're playing in SF next month.

akm, Friday, 4 October 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)
