what a relief

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 20 February 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

colin is a twat, edith is a bore.

and taking over mark and lard for ever more.."

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin and Edith are ok, he knows a little more about music than you would expect, and for some reason I quite fancy her so I can't bring myself to find her either boring or annoying. As for Mark and Lard, Mr Radcliffe had it in spades when he was doing that out on blue 6 show, but as a double act I always thought they were dull and grating.

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if he does more like "Out on blue 6" on radio 2, I won't be complaining.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 February 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

if that's the same colin as does the late night ch 4 music spot stuff he can go fuck himself. it's only fair

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

he is so annoying. was unrelentingly shit at last year's kerrang! awards. have only heard him on radio once, when My Morning jacket appeared, and he was excruciatingly off the money and boring: "so, you've got beards then, hahahahaha. So Dave Grohl likes you. Erm. Uh." *dead air* *embarrassed Jim James politely and good naturedly talks for a bit to cover the silence*

stevie (stevie), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Why does everyone seem intent on force-feeding Colin Murray on the world, though? Especially as everything he touches turns to shit?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Radcliffe was money when he did "Out on Blue 6". 60s psych, proggy Peter Hammill stuff, post-punk, etc. Agree that the Radio 1 show had run it's course.

Robert Moore (treble), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

New, Out on Blue 6 anybody?

Russell Dixon (Skinny), Friday, 20 February 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

my mum teaches mark radcliffe's daughter and apparently radcliffe is really fussy and demands they give her warm milk and stuff during the day.

Flotsam of the Fishfolk (Flotsam of the Fishfolk), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

gosh. warm milk for kids .. thats pulling the celeb ranking in aint it !
trust me .. we are far more fussy over the way our kids are treated and no f*cker know me from bbc radio shows ..
nothing wrong with being stroppy parents .. tis our perogative.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but warm milk? uddhhhhhh...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Colin actually - he has real enthusiasm about music - it's kind of a shame he's become a celebrity. He should be doing the Evening Session - he did the Session in NI, was good on that, and was good when he stood in for Lamacq.

As for Mark and Lard, it's a shame but no surprise. They've been (wonderfully) out of place for years.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Friday, 20 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin Murray is overstretched. At first, he seemed a genuinely likeable guy, but now he has to squeeze three radio shows, two adverts, and a TV presenting job into every five second gap, he appears to have completely lost the thread of whatever he's supposed to be talking about at any given time. I'll miss Mark and Lard, though - I grew up with them on the graveyard shift, and that was truthfully some of the funniest radio I've ever heard.

Jason J, Friday, 20 February 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Hit The North on Radio 5 was even better than the late night slot on R1. But There was a much better radio reception for R1 than R5 obviously which was better for taping.

Ramon d, Friday, 20 February 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I took classes from Mark Radcliffe's dad, Phil, at the University of Manchester. He's a terrific guy, was well loved by all his students. And I met Mark once -- he was really friendly as well, willing to talk trade with an aspiring reporter kid (probably helped that his dad arranged the get-together). I can't speak to Mark's shows over the past 13 years, since I haven't been back to the U.K. in that time; but on the personal front, I'll vouch that he's a fine fella from a fine family.

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 21 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
Starts today on Radio 2: 10.30pm - 12

Mark Radcliffe
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/radcliffe/

Radcliffe too old for Radio 1, too alternative for Radio 2?

starts with New Order: Touched by the Hand of God

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

make that New Order: True Faith

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

methinks I'm going to like this new Radcliffe show. It's going to be like the graveyard shift, great music to listen to while I struggle with my work, and no banging techno like what Peel plays.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

now:

Echo & the Bunnymen: Killing Moon

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Top guest = the barmaid off Corrie. Too alternative?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

where is that radio 2-loving Pinefox?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mozza couldn't probably could not make it, so he "drafted" a local in ! ha

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Make that Corrie barmaid who has never heard of Loretta Lynn. (this Jack White-produced Loretta Lynn album not being a radical departure for Radio 2 as Jonathan Ross was playing it on Saturday morning)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

This song, however, sounds like "Hillbilly Rock" by the cast of Emmerdale.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i think Radcliffe will actually tone down his "act"/ persona, to fit in with the mostly over 40something audience/ radio 2 format.

the show is a light entertainment "magazine" format, a bit of this a bit of that - it's not going to be radical "Out on Blue Six" music show - that he could do, if he was on 6 Music.

The point i am making that Radcliffe with no restraints, would be too alternative for Radio 2, and would be better off on 6 Music.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the racey story haha
and that image of Wogan et al giving him chinese burns teh funny

de, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

where is that Brit-Cultural studies titan Carmody?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Brit-Cultural studies tit(an) Carmody

de, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll get me coat (i do think he's one dissertation short of a thesis though)

de, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no Man in Tea Cosey is on: Badly Drawn Bo[y]-ring

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no reason Radcliffe can't get away with not toning stuff down, Jonathan Ross gets away with it at 10 in the morning on a Saturday. Also Radcliffe comes with an audience who know what to expect.

(that Racey thing made me laugh too, it's so like all the "Maconie talks about Blur AGAIN" ads that permeate Radio 2)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine he's about to "exclusively" reveal that her off Corrie was in St Winifred's School Choir.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Wylie: Sinful [an old Annie Nightingale Radio 1 fav track]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i could hear that US band "The Killers" covering this track - easily

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Wylie: the David Bowie of Socialist People's Republic of Liverpool

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the third part of the crucial 3, Julian Cope - Teardrop Explodes: Passionate Friend

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Mwahahahah - TOLD YOU!

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(about her off Corrie being in St Winifred's School Choir). If only he'd made it a phone-in, I could have had a Mark Radcliffe mug.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

spot on

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope he plays a track from Rachel Goswell's first solo outing

de, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope I never hear this Charlotte Hatherley song ever again. It's like the last decade never happened (if it was a decade ago, I'd have loved it, but there's no need for it right now).

The ba-ba-ba-doo bits are ripped off Absolute Beginners.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be an improvement of this rubbish bubblegum yank-ified power pop/ corp rawk from the chick from Ash

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

re: Rachel Goswell would be an improvement on above

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yes I thought Lard had taken all the indie crud with him to 6

de, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

and a brand name for the show !

Rocket Science with Marc Riley
http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/presenters/marc_riley/index.shtml

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

where is that radio 2-loving Pinefox?

Not listening to R2, so far. I guess I should be. For History's sake.

the pinefox, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rocket Science with Marc Riley"

(of "and The Creepers" fame)

de, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't bother, it's just lots of Badly Drawn Boy being dull. This one sounds like a Robbie Williams ballad.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

With extra tweeness...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinefox, getting ready to be seduced by Janice Long at Midnight?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Badly Drawn Boy couldn't get more boring if he tried !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

these new tracks are even more drippy than his previous.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

bring back John Shuttleworth and Frank Sidebottom

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that's all folk's ...end of first show

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Martian: well, I listen to Janice most nights. But not tonight.

the pinefox, Monday, 7 June 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Morrissey is choosing records for her tonight. She is playing the Manics version of Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. I think I may be in the minority by being more pleased about the latter.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

pinefox you're a breezeblocker now?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/breezeblock/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

QOTheday why do women "tilt" their heads?

Janice Long
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/long/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

You calling Morrissey a woman?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Janice Long !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

But Morrissey's head is at exactly the same angle on that page...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I don't think I like 'The Breezeblock'.

I thought Martian's question was from Janice, not about her!

the pinefox, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Bit of Robert Johnson, Morrissey, lovely.

"Some say Jamie Cullum sold his soul to the devil...
what other explanation could there be?"
haha

de, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

More sniping and subversion please mr r

de, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

this continues to be great. the guests make this (they were always a highlight on the radio 1 nighttime slot (i never bothered with the daytime)) and i don't miss lard as much as i thought i would.

people here keep asking me why i'm laughing...

it's also prompted me to try other radio 2 shows. sounds of the 60s on now and is great in parts, presenter sounds about 80. 'D-Day Dance Of Death' sounds promising too 8)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Close, Brian Matthew is 75.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 11 June 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

he's split his show up into 'Side 1' and 'Side 2' and keeps playing 'disks' for people on their 40th wedding anniversaries...

koogs (koogs), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds of the Sixties was never as good after Keith Fordyce left. nor has it ever been as good as its TV namesake, currently running on BBC Four (tonight's edition started with a clip of Brian Johnston and then segued from Lord Reith to "Get Off Of My Cloud", which sounds like someone here parodying me, probably why i like it).

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 11 June 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Just switched on the Jonathan Ross show this morning and caught Jonathan bidding his fond farewells to his guest, Mark Radcliffe. D'oh! May be worth a listen.
