This is just to satisfy a truly longlasting curiosity... I started going out in clubs regularly circa 1993, and there are some songs that, for some reason or another, are classics known by everyone in the "scene" here, yet appear to me as oddly puzzling choices. I mean, it's comprehensible for a dj to play "Bizarre Love Triangle", "Here Comes Your Man", "Temple of Love", "Ça plane pour moi", "Girls and Boys" or whatnot and get general approval and acknowledgement, but some other popular favourites are just... Strange picks. I developed the theory that these are merely "local classics", for lack of a better explanation, but I could very well be utterly mistaken. That's the purpose of my thread, actually. The four that immediately come to my mind are:
"Chinese Black" by Neon Judgement
"The Last Song" by T21
"I Sit on Acid" by Lords of Acid
"Fata Morgana" by Dissidenten + Lem Chaheb
How come these songs *still* get played weekly in almost all the clubs I go to, and are actually recognized by all the punters present? It's a mystery to me. Are these songs likely to pop up on a regular basis in the clubs you people go to? Do you have similar popular oddities?

Ca Plane Pour Moi? I Sit On Acid? You should complete the
(Belgian) picture and include "J'aime la vie" by Sandra Kim and
also some *kickin'* tunes by the Singing Nun.

Can I just pre-empt the Pinefox's inevitable answer and say that it's
really only him who doesn't like it when "Romeo" and "One More Time"
get played at Sussed?

The fact that the Moldy Peaches AND Daft Punk could fill a Strange
Fruit dancefloor made me feel extremely happy. Shut up, Ewing. YOU
DON'T UNDERSTAND!
Worryingly, it now seems normal and expected for me to go out and
expect the Moldy Peaches to be played - in Preston I could thank my
lucky stars if I get to hear either "Debaser" or New Order. Me =
spoilt! In a certain social circle one do be taking yr oddities for
granted.
I'm happy that I played the Louvin Brothers in a club situation. I
bet that's not been done elsewhere. And ahem, after seeing the looks
I recieved, I probably won't be doing it again.
UNLESS it's an AFTERNOON session in which case it's the obvious place
for it.

I'm not sure what Ewing is on about. I've never heard of 'Romeo'. I
know 'Romeo & Juliet' by Dire Straits, that's pretty good. I don't
think I've ever heard it in a disco. I think Ewing, as Cockfarmer,
plays some good records and some abysmal ones. The records mentioned
in the question sound abysmal to me, too, but I have never heard them.

Alot of clubs in Toronto used to play some damm song "First Last of
Everything" by Endgames due to CFNY having a hardon for the song 17
years and counting. Remeber the old Yamaha "Human Chorus" sound?
Runs all through out the song. Ahhh, AHhh AHHH ahhh AHHHH ahhh AHHH.
"Bug Powder Dust" by Bomb The Bass gets played all the time and
actually gets people dancing out in the local student bar. The fact
that there was a movie about book was odd enough let alone a rap song.
