CLASSIQUE x 100,000,000

But surely this has come up before?

NERQ (Enrique), Friday, 20 February 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I searched for it, didn't find it.
But I am bad at using the search function.

djdee2005, Friday, 20 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

classic, easily. nice dirty funk.-

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 20 February 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben Stiller + golf + stereotypes= classic!!!!!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 20 February 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Puffy + music = DUD
Puffy + music videos = sometimes classic
Puffy + Making the Hip-Hop Band = classic!!

Step #241 in shedding my indie-rap guilt: realizing that if El-P had done this beat, I'd love it unconditionally, then realizing I loved the beat anyways and that Diddy et al on the mic > SA Smash

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 20 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite like it (lame video tho) - is that main hook based on the opening bass riff on Labi Siffre's 'I Got The' or is it something else?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

This track is no "D.I.D.D.Y."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

one of the only Megahertz productions I can stand (besides "One For Peedi Crakk").

Al (sitcom), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That bass drum sounds so incredible on a loud system

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

He flexes at the end of the video. But yeah this track is no D.I.D.D.Y.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 20 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

wait why is D.I.D.D.Y. any good? beat was used a thousand times before, and the hook was lifted from KRS. I mean if you're gonna steal a hook, shouldn't you have to steal from a genre that isn't your own?

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there is nothing wrong with Puffy stealing a hook about jimmy hats. Plus the video is stunning (shiny suit man!) and he claims that Mr. Belvedere works for him.

What!?

What I think was Great and Important about "D.I.D.D.Y." is that it ushered in Puffy's new relaxed rapping style where everything just sounds effortless - see also him swapping lines with Busta on "Pass The Courvoisier Part II".

Songwise I don't think I could choose between "D.I.D.D.Y." and "Bad Boys For Life" - but don't forget the REEEEEMIIIIIXX!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 February 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to admit here, I think this is definitely among the worst popular songs of the past decade, maybe longer. wow, is it bad. the riff, the rhymes, the video, all of it. gaaaah. I usually don't drop into threads and do this sort of thing, but at the time this song seemed so atrocious, I found myself wondering if anyone at all actually liked it, or if the whole life cycle of it through the charts and on the radio was just based on payola.

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 21 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah I'll admit any success this song had was purely based on hype, payola and all that good stuff. But I kind of enjoy those horrendous The-King-Is-Poised-To-Fall attention-getters.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 February 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Tim cause his rapping on "I'll Be Missing You" wasn't relaxed at all. Nor was, oh, almost everything else he's done.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 21 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, what's your opinion of "Bad Boy for Life"? You haven't said yet.

As irritating a figure as Puffy is, I think it's a classic. That beat is just too much.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 21 February 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

what i love in the video where puffy and shaq do that crazy-jiggly dance together in sync after shaq dunks. is puffy a better dancer than usher??

dave k, Sunday, 22 February 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeah Tim cause his rapping on "I'll Be Missing You" wasn't relaxed at all. Nor was, oh, almost everything else he's done."

I think you're confusing "relaxed" with "wooden" Oops. There is a difference. Also I think he actually sounded quite worked up on stuff like the Godzilla song and "PE 2000". He didn't do worked up well though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 23 February 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a decent beat, Broheems. Sufficiently dirty for my tastes, and probably my favorite of all the ones that Puffy's rapped on---which isn't saying very much at all.

Is the Godzilla song the Kashmir one? That was the only one I remember where he sounded awake. Made me wish he stayed asleep. In any case, he's really an awful mc.
