Anyone ever hear of an Atlanta band called The Rock*A*Teens?

...or know what happened to them? Are they still together? Last I knew they were on Merge Records.

Yeah. I had two of their albums. Sold'em both, but "Black Ice" was a nice track. Saw'em live opening for someone as well....might've been Spoon. They were alright, but they weren't about the change the world.

I'm pretty sure they broke up.

no. In fact I think they're playing Seattle soon. ask Tab25, he knows one of 'em. wait, I know one of 'em....never mind. Anyhow. they're super good in a shambolic Spector-esque kinda way.

I liked them -- I saw them open for Superchunk at the El Ray in Los Angeles in 96 or 97... don't know if they are still around or not. I think in addition to Merge, they put records out on the Indigo Girls' label.

I liked their sound a lot -- sort of super-stoned Roy Orbison sounding rock songs -- but don't remember any songs standing out.

I was just thinking about them the other day when I heard My Morning Jacket -- they both do the DRENCHED in REVERB thing.

Kelly Hogan used to be in the band, right? They had some buzz five years ago or so. Haven't heard anything recent.

I saw them, at CMJ in 2000? 2001? As I remember, each of their albums would have one mind-blowing song, and the rest would be decent. The track that pops up in my head right now is "Stand Tall," which I always used to play on my college radio show and I can still hear in my head despite not actually having heard the song in about 3 years.

Shit album covers, though.

taken by the singer, I believe

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I think they're quite good :)

I like the singer's voice (name escapes me...), and "Black Ice" rules. Shannon Wright sings on one of their songs. Oh, and the reverb... yay for reverb.

Cry is one of my favorite indie records of the last bunch of years. Cherry Red Compilation begs the question...which Cherry Red compilation? Pillows and Prayers? Burning Ambitions? I like that entire record tons, but other albums I've heard have done nothing for me. Yeah, some of the coolest guitar tones ever.

one year passes...
Merge is releasing the first record by former/head R*A*T Chris Lopez's new band, Tenemant Halls, in August.

yes, one of the bands i play in opened for them once. we were sort of built to spill/neil young-ish back then, and after the show their lead singer walked by and said 'nice guitar heroics' in a smarmy voice. i said 'thanks'. i bet he felt pretty superior at that moment

I had Sweetbird of Youth, which I loved quite a bit, and then I bought Golden Time, which I didn't love so much. I put them on a scale...

ROCKATEENS - FROG EYES - XIU XIU

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

That's not a scale, it's a horizontal list.

didn't they do the original of "Woo-Hoo" covered by the 5678's?
