Oops.. Strange Advance .....Retreat!

tipustiger, Saturday, 21 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

damn ... you already picked all the best ones.
But I'll add
Platinum Blonde -- It Doesn't Really Matter
Honeymoon Suite -- Moonlight Desires
Gowan -- Strange Animal
+ L'affair, Nova Heart, Don't Walk Past, High School, that's only seven ... uh, Canadian music wasn't so great in the early to mid-80's.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Gowan also did Moonlight Desires, not sure about Honeymoon Suite.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that's right, it was Gowan. I'll add HS - Wave Babies, then.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Rough Trade - High School Confidential

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

does Payolas' "Eyes of a Stranger" fit the order?

ken taylrr, Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Good enough for me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure, the Payola$ count! Although I was trying for OMDish, Thompson Twins, synth pop angle. There really isn't that much to go around is there?

tipustiger, Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Three classics:

Nash The Slash - Children of the Night
The Diodes - The Diodes
The Demics - The Demics

maypang (maypang), Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Gowan's "A Criminal Mind" was a great song in 84 or so.

Idle Eyes' "Tokyo Rose" was another really good tune.

Anyone remember Images in Vogue and Cats Can Fly? Ugh ugh ugh.

abegrand, Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Subdivisions" is the only song in this genre that I could listen to and genuinely enjoy in the year 2004. Canadian AOR on the other hand . . .

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

trans!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Idle Eyes' "Tokyo Rose" was another really good tune.
Anyone remember Images in Vogue and Cats Can Fly? Ugh ugh ugh.

Putting IIV and Cats Can Fly in the same sentence is bad enough, but insulting the fantastic Images In Vogue one sentence after praising the pleasant-yet-ultimately-dull Idle Eyes is unforgivable! ;)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 21 February 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I did like Gowan at the time. But "Moonlight Desires" is surely post-NR/SP?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Images in Vogue sucked so badly. Saw a video of theirs on MuchMoreRetro a while back, and it still made me want to retch. Pretentoius synth crap.

abegrand, Saturday, 21 February 2004 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kiss in the Dark" > "She Controls Me"

dave q, Saturday, 21 February 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Demics?!?? Great band, classic, for certain. But "romantic/synth pop"?!?! shurely not?

pauls00, Saturday, 21 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Spoons' "Nova Heart" is surely one of the greatest synth pop songs ever - not just amongst those from Canada.

01 The Spoons - Nova Heart
02 Martha & The Muffins - Swimming
03 Rough Trade - All Touch
04 Blue Peter - Don't Walk Past
05 Men Without Hats - Freeways
06 Rough Trade - Crimes of Passion
07 Payola$ - Eyes of a Stranger
08 Men Without Hats - Where Do The Boys Go?
09 Platinum Blonde - Not In Love
10 Dalbello - Gotta Get Close To You

"San Paku" by Darkroom is a guilty pleasure, if anyone else remembers that.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 21 February 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

10 Dalbello - Gotta Get Close To You

Another good one, one of the best stalker songs, ever. Covered quite ably by Queensryche in 1986.

abegrand, Saturday, 21 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

this is all about moev for me -- "alibis" and "yeah, whatever."

notfazed (notfazed), Saturday, 21 February 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

First one to offer up Sylum as their answer gets a beating.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 22 February 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Not necessarly my favorites, but ten that haven't been said:
Rational Youth - Saturdays in Silesia
Rational Youth - City of night
Trans X - Vivre sur vidéo/Living on video
Corey Hart - Sunglasses at night (does that fit?)
Sherry Kean - I want you back
The Spoons - Romantic traffic
Strange Advance - We run
Moev - Crucify me
Handful Of Snowdrops - Gabrielle
The Box - My dreams of you

Seb (Seb), Sunday, 22 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dalbello = childhood trauma

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 22 February 2004 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Eight Seconds, 'Kiss You When It's Dangerous'

derrick (derrick), Monday, 23 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
I finally saw the video for Nova Heart on MMR since I had all the channels free for a couple of monthes. It sounded like it was taped on an old VHS cassette. But I'm still impressed by how good the first half of Arias and Symphonies still sounds. And Nova Heart is on the b side.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa. Trans-X were Canadian? had no idea..

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Honeymoon Suite could once be classified as New Romantic/Synth Pop? had no idea..

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Half of the bands we named aren't New Romantic/Synth pop. This is really a NewRo/Synthpop-era thread. (an "80's Canadian New Music/Modern Rock thread"?)

Labelling Rough Trade a "New Romantic" band would be quite the stretch ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 17 February 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well for starters they were too old but they did share a fashion sense or two.

One of the last times I heard CFNY in the morning they were having a debate about wether Pope was a celebrity or not :(
How far away from their roots can that radio station get?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys!!

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Overdrive "Tekno Talk" (1982)

I'm wondering if this group was the pre-cursor to Trans-X.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Luba? oh dude, no.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i just have an (ir)rational hatred for that song. that bloody hot air balloon and giant sideways hair braid...

never toooo keen on parachute club either, but i think "dancing at the feet of the moon" was a better song than "rise up", if only for the the bridge (at least i think the bridge is the bit i like)

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"At the Feet of the Moon" is a far better song, even if it was one-tenth the hit that "Rise Up" was.

I never liked Luba either.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is the love for KON KAN's 'I beg your pardon'?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Too late for the New Romantic/Synth-pop era (although there are many songs named on this thread that aren't from that era either).

Incidentally, "I Beg Your Pardon" >> every other song named on this thread.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That's because "I Beg Your Pardon" is actually a New Order song in disguise.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

'Nova Heart', 'Saftey Dance' and a tune or two by Gowan are on this thread so clearly you have been drinking rum in the Flatiron park again.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Luba do "Giving Away a Miracle"?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Who did "Hands Up"? Saraya? Does that fit?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Or was this it? I was convinced that song was Canadian. (Saraya was a hair metal band, it seems.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

In order:Yes, I don't remember, I don't recall, I don't know and I couldn't tell you.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha - I'm glad the rum incident has not been forgotten!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps stretching the category a bit, but I'm not the first one:

1.Men Without Hats, "Safety Dance"
2.Condition, "Mumbo Jumbo"
3.Jane Siberry, "Mimi On The Beach"
4.TicToc, "20 Questions"
5.Martha & the Muffins, "Echo Beach"
6.Lisa Dalbello, "Pretty Girls"
7.Tulpa, "Life's So Strange"
8.Payola$, "Eyes Of A Stranger"
9.Mitsou, "Bye Bye Mon Cowboy"
10.Spoons, "Nova Heart"

Platinum Blonde sounds better in memory than I was ever able to admit. Certainly better than Bon Jovi (the band destined to displace PB as my sister's temporary favourite.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, this was the "Hands Up" of which I was thinking. So Ottawan was in fact a French-Caribbean deal. Must have been the name that threw me.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hands Up" was also a one-hitter for an act called Sway - 1988 or so. Maybe they were Canucks.

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

nine years pass...

With all these end-of-year lists flying about I thought I should draw attention to this gem which should have been in my top 15 last year but didn't get a proper listen till this week. DIANA - Perpetual Surrender.
