In 1994 I only had to play both debut albums by Weezer and Sammy to convince my friend that indie rock was better than gangsta rap.

did your friend not have 'The Chronic' and 'Black Sunday' then?

I used The Shamen's _En-Tact_ and The Prodigy's _Experience_ to get my classic rock-obssessed college roommate into dance music.

Strange, in 1994 I convinced a friend to stop listening to the likes of Weezer by playing him gangsta rap.

OH! I also turned another college roommate's ENTIRE FAMILY into Cure-zombies when I loaned him a copy of _Standing On A Beach_ and he took it home with him over break.

My father used to say the only kind of music he didn't like was Hawaiian music, but I was playing some Sol Hoopii when he was around, and he liked it. He was surprised when I told him it was Hawaiian. (Of course, it has a strong jazz element to it, but it's still Hawaiian.)

Dan, you really are an evil man.

I used 'Pornography' by The Cure to get my sister's Marilyn Manson-loving goth friend into actual gothic music.

The Jazz Composers Orchestra (Communications 8-11) on JCOA/ecm.

This changed the way i heard music, and it's effected and excited most people i've leant it to. Since the booklet, packaging and track sequencing sort'a help understand the whole thing, it's like a little manifesto for a sort of music that would still sound new to most people today, even though it's 35 years old.
If you have to have just one of these sorts of records/ musics, make it this one. I was obsessed with it for several years and yet it still helped open up _many_ _other_ new musical worlds for me.

I'm not going to say what sort of music it is. Despite whatever you may think about that being self-evident from the title, jazz is a rather burnt out & misleading term in this case. Just try it out. You have to listen to the whole record. The more attention you give it, the better & the faster it gets.

i dont know if this counts but i introduced noise-rock, joy division and a lot of japanese stuff to all the grunger/nu-metal kids in my 6th form. also got about 1/2 of them into dub reggea.

I got my friend into the indier side of alternative rock through The White Stripes. He's not full fledged indie, but now he seeks out bands like Les Savy Fav, Hot Hot Heat and The Exploding Hearts on his own.

some Sol Hoopii

Ah, great stuff! :-)

Dan, you really are an evil man.

Evil meaning wonderful, right?

In high school, my best friend (who I still hang around with) listened to the Cure way, way too much. So I loaned him The Land Of Rape And Honey. The first time he played it, he told me it gave him a headache that wouldn't go away for hours. But then he wouldn't give it back. Now he goes to Borbetomagus and Khanate shows with me. And I have grown to appreciate the Cure (though this is more my wife's influence than my friend's).

I have trouble w/"gateway groups" because it means I have to sit through a period where the person I'm trying to convert talks about how great Outkast is but can't understand why I like Mobb Deep...blah. Better to throw them right into the deep end. I say Amerikkka's Most Wanted, a Jay-Z album, David Banner, Mobb Deep, etc.

Singles Going Steady by the Buzzcocks helped transform some friends of mine who up until that point only listened to Rush and The Who.

One of my friends was only into the Velvet Underground and Mission of Burma. I made him listen to Ride the Skies and Wonderful Rainbow. That set him straight.

most of these conversions do not appear to be to the converts benefit.
